2 1 Module Title Photo Imaging for Fine Art and Graphics 2 Module Code L Level 5 4 Credit Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This is an elective vocational module for Level 5 awards. It is designed to introduce the student to fine-art photography and it s various techniques and applications within fine art, graphic design and mixed media. It involves camera and dark room experimentation and incorporates elements from both fine art graphics practices. 6 Preferred Entry Level Through the photographic process it provides the student with an understanding of photography as an art practice, illuminating its techniques, methods and diversity of application. Level 4 Certificate. Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. 7 Special Requirements Evidence of work to show learner s interest and potential in area. 8 General Aims Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 Discover potential for creativity, self-expression and visual awareness within the medium 8.2 Develop a knowledge and understanding of the principals of professional (SRL) camera operation 8.3 Understand and feel confident with the experimental aspects of darkroom procedure, film processing, printing and image manipulation 8.4 Understand aesthetics in lighting, colour and composition 8.5 Recognise the camera as an artistic tool for self expression 8.6 Acquire a critical awareness of fine art and design photography and the main trends, movements and photographers therein 8.7 Develop the ability and necessary skills of visual communication to translate ideas into stimulating visual photographic work

3 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units. Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 The creative use of the SLR camera Experimentation in film processing and Black and White printing Creative lighting for colour or black and white Photography as fine art, mixed media or graphic design 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 The creative use of the SLR camera Understand the components and visual functions of a 35mm camera Use shutter speed (blur) and aperture (selective focus) in an informed and visually creative manner Select film speed and lenses showing awareness of their textural and compositional impact on the final image Show evidence of research and visualisation in the development of ideas through the photographic process Use the film frame in a challenging and aesthetically informed way Unit 2 Experimentations in film processing and Black and White printing Understand film loading, processing solutions and procedures Use and understand the effect of specialised processing methods on the final image Make evaluative judgements with regard to image selection, contrast and method of printing Use and understand the creative possibilities of the darkroom with regard to image alteration, manipulation and layering Translate processes and dark room effects to ideas and concepts in a personal and related way Make informed critical decisions on work in progress

4 Unit 3 Creative lighting for colour or black and white Understand the emotional effect of lighting Understand the difference in colour temperature between natural and artificial light and make choices appropriate to the content and nature of the subject Use and select as appropriate between black and white or colour film Use a light meter Make informed decisions on the choice of filters, coloured gels, and forms and styles of lighting Translate from visual research into photographic practice Make informed critical judgements Unit 4 Photography as fine art, mixed media or graphic design Understand the inter-relatedness of photography with fine art or design Work with collage, slide projections or mixed media Show research and development of photographic ideas through a wide range of mediums Show knowledge of fine art and design photographic practices or experimental uses of photography in installation and multi media artwork 11 Portfolio of Assessment Summary Collection of Work 100% 11.1 Collection of Work The internal assessor will devise guidelines for candidates on gathering a collection of work that demonstrates evidence of a broad range of specific learning outcomes. 12 Grading Pass 50-64% Merit 65-79% Distinction %
