1 ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS GIFTED VISUAL ARTS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM General Information The Anne Arundel County Gifted Visual Arts Enrichment Program consists of eligible students identified through the countywide formal screening process. A wide variety of art problems related to classic fine arts genres will be covered using many different kinds of media. Art problems will be individually reviewed to address each individual s conceptual and skill needs. Field trips and guest artist demonstrations may be scheduled as part of the enrichment experience. HOW CAN YOU QUALIFY? Applying to the Gifted Visual Arts Enrichment Program requires creativity, task commitment and above average ability. Nominations may be made by your Visual Arts teacher, parents, peers, or yourself. A Portfolio is required and must include four prescribed drawings and a sketchbook. HOW TO START Talk to your Visual Arts teacher and your parents/guardians. The Visual Arts department in your school will assist you with the application process which includes portfolio requirements, nomination forms and deadlines.. THE BEST WAY TO PRESENT YOUR PORTFOLIO As you prepare your portfolio artwork, consider the following: Make light and shadow to help define form Make good use of line and tone to describe contours Depict objects using accurate proportions Compose to achieve a balanced arrangement Organize the background in space in a way that clearly depicts its relationship to the main idea Draw from observation or imaginative response, rather than copying from a photo or drawing Choose a unique point of view to present your subject Work should reflect your very best efforts and will merit equal consideration.

2 TIMELINE FOR APPLICATION Friday, October 2, 2015 Completed portfolios and credentials are due back to your Visual Arts teacher. Friday, October 16, 2015 by NOON Portfolios and credentials, checked by the Visual Arts teacher, are due to the Visual Arts Office. Tuesday, October 20, 2015 Screening by the selection committee. Friday, October 23, 2015 Applicants are notified by mail. To Be Announced The GT Program will meet at Southern High School in Mr. Bell s Art Studio, Rm. G101, 4400 Solomons Island Road, Harwood, MD The Program is taught by Mr. Bell, NBCT and Marlene Kramer, NBCT. Details of the program will be sent with the acceptance letter, including any Museum & Studio 39 field trip days. See tentative schedule of dates below. 3 Anne Arundel County Public Schools VISUAL ARTS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM IDENTIFICATION AND SELECTION The program is designed to offer the participants a differentiated and challenging art studio experience with the emphasis on portfolio development. The syllabus for the program, based on the Advanced Placement Program for Studio Art and college portfolio requirements, will serve as the basis for studio problems in drawing and painting from life. Student Information Parents, teachers, peers or administrators may nominate students who exhibit in their art the characteristics listed below: 1. Indications of the student s unusual perceptual/conceptual ability as reflected in the skill demonstrated in organizing thoughts visually. 2. Technical skill in depicting images present. 3. Genuine concern for detail and a decided interest in filling the space with carefully delineated and well thought-out ideas. 4. Fluency of imagination and personal expression. 5. Technical skill in the use of selected expression. 6. Persistent interest in all forms of art. Student Selection The selection of participants for the program is conducted as follows: 1. Students need to secure three nominations. One from their Visual Arts teacher, one from Parents/guardians, and one other from oneself, a relative, another teacher, peers or anyone with adequate knowledge of the student s art ability. 2. Students need to complete the portfolio requirements. 3. Students must send a sketchbook of their work. 4. Final score will be determined by a numeric score attained through a compilation of the abovementioned items. Portfolio Requirements: Sketchbook Journal Each student must submit a sketchbook/visual journal in addition to the four artworks. Sketchbook/visual journals should reflect creative thought processes and content in a variety of forms such as drawings, sketches, collages, photographs, graphics, notes to self, and personally meaningful symbols. The sketches need not be in a book, but should be a collection of drawings, which illustrates a sequential development of ideas, as well as a creative approach to solving problems. The sketchbook will be evaluated on the following areas: Original Ideas Experimentation with media Fluency Creative or inventive approach

4 Portfolio Requirements Continued Each student applying to the Gifted Visual Arts Enrichment Program is required to submit a file folder with the works listed below. Complete the Visual Problems on no larger than 8.5 x 11 paper in any medium. Identify each artwork on the back with your name and the problem number. When completed, affix the portfolio cover sheet to the front of the file folder. #1 Make a line drawing of a still life from observation (do not copy photographs). Artwork can be created in school or at home. This drawing will be evaluated on the following areas: Accuracy of proportions of the various parts of the still life How well the drawing relates to the space in which it is drawn use of compositional strategy to create adequate use of space and perspective (point of view) Use of shading (rendering of light and shadow) to capture depth and form Creative interpretation of the subject Middle School Sample High School Sample #2 Produce a drawing of two or more human figures from life (do not copy photographs). Your artwork can be created in school or at home. Your drawing will be evaluated on the following: Attention to details which identify characteristics of the figure, the pose, and any props that enhance the figures such as chairs, etc Relationship of the figures to the space in which they are drawn Accuracy of proportion Creative interpretation of the subject

5 #3 Observe yourself in a mirror and create a self-portrait (do not copy photographs). Artwork can be created in school or at home. The drawing of the face and facial features must be from observation. Use your imagination to create a background that is reflective of the inner you. Consider your personality traits and interests. Demonstrate your use of black and white as well as color media in the creation of this artwork. This drawing will be evaluated on the following: Accuracy of proportion of observed head and facial features Unique or creative approach to the artwork Fluency of ideas Composition: Use of space Use of line, form and texture #4 Create an observational drawing that focuses on your environment (do not copy photographs). Artwork can be created in school or at home. The subject matter that you choose may consist of your outdoor or indoor environment. This artwork may be created using black and white or color media. This artwork will be evaluated on the following: Creative or inventive approach Use of line and shading to define shape, form, and space Accuracy of proportion Technique/use of medium

This nomination may be completed by oneself, a relative, another teacher, peers, or anyone with adequate knowledge of the student s art ability.
