More than 1 in 4 Americans has a musculoskeletal condition that requires medical attention. This 4th annual symposium focuses on select topics that have been requested by previous attendees in order to bridge the gaps in their orthopaedic knowledge. This year, the course is tailored to enable learners to develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge base and skills for managing orthopaedic patients with hip fractures, foot and spine conditions. Performance Objectives At the end of this conference, participants should be able to: Correlate underlying biological, mechanical and social reasons for fragility fractures to treatment options surgical and nonsurgical Discuss the complex issues of care of the elderly who undergo orthopaedic surgery Identify the role of the physical therapy for patients with geriatric fragility fractures and all populations with foot, ankle and spine conditions and injuries Discuss discharge criteria and options as related to patients with fragility fractures Demonstrate the causes for pain and dysfunction throughout the foot and ankle Identify the role of the orthotist and the use of orthotics in orthopaedic care specifically the lower extremity Describe different types of diseases of the nails and correlate to treatment strategies Correlate the diagnosis, anatomy, pathophysiology and treatment options - including surgical indications to the management of Spinal Stenosis and Failed Back Identify causes of back pain in the athlete and correlate to treatment modalities COMPETENCIES This symposium will address the following ACGME/ABMS competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills Medical Knowledge Practice-based Learning and Improvement Interpersonal and Communication Skills Professionalism Systems-based Practice Target Audience Primary care physicians, intermits, PAs, NPs, nurses, PTs, residents and fellows.
