10 Turning ideas and knowledge into products and services Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) is long-standing, proven, government-funded scheme that assists companies to innovate products and processes. They involve an organisation and a university joining forces to address a specific challenge. A KTP places a jointly selected high quality graduate, supported by a leading academic expert for between 6 months and three years, to work on a specific project that will significantly and permanently improve your organisations performance. Projects focus on innovative solutions to generate new products, develop markets, improve operating processes and systems or increase sustainability. What are the common project areas? 15 Case Studies The Client Manchester Airports Group Plc The Project Manchester Airports Group Plc was keen to share data related to flight paths to and from the airport. MMU was approached to enable visualisation of flight data, such as over where aeroplanes fly and at what height, in an accessible way that the public could understand without any prior knowledge. Whilst standard Geographical Information System packages can support a certain amount of functionality in this area, Manchester Airports Group Plc specific requirements necessitated a bespoke approach. The Results Software developed in Java that presents 2D and 3D static and animated views of flight paths in Google Earth that clearly show how planes take off from, and land into, an airport and over which areas and at what height. Wanting to display aircraft flight paths to the public, we approached MMU to see if they could turn our functional spec into an application using their technical expertise. The result was a very elegant, and extremely usable piece of software, which fulfilled our criteria. The Client The Village Bakery Ltd. Small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) based in Wrexham, Wales. Familyowned bakery producing a wide range of savoury pastries and morning goods via shops, wholesale business and national retailers. The Project The client recognised that to maintain a competitive edge within the dynamic food market, it had to keep evolving. They needed to develop a new range of gluten-free products, so approached Manchester Metropolitan University about a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) because of its expertise in food technology. The Results Facilitated move into a profitable niche market, achieving sales of 6m, 2m NPT, 52% market share and exports of 360k (within 2 years). Established new accredited bakery, with 46 skilled jobs created. Waste levels decreased (16% to 0.07%) and customer complaints were reduced by 80%. Access to university facilities and expertise to develop products. Developed technical skills and expertise, e.g. functionality of food ingredients. Raised company profile and enhanced reputation, enabling further business developments with major retailers. The programme achieved everything that was proposed and the company now has robust quality systems in place. 14
