1 Job description: Teaching Assistant (Level 2) Responsible to: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA s) Salary scale: RSD point 9 to RSD point 20 Period of Notice: One calendar month Job Purpose 1. To assist the teacher in creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive learning environment. 2. To promote the inclusion of all students ensuring they have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop. Key Responsibilities Support for the Students by Providing feedback to students in relation to progress and achievement (STL24, STL29, STL30). Establishing and developing productive working relationships with students acting as a role model and setting high standards of behaviour and learning. Providing pastoral support as appropriate (STL4, STL20, STL41). Working with students, understanding how to motivate and encourage them to develop and achieve (STL2) as independently as possible. Working with the teachers and other professionals to develop and implement IEPs, behaviour plans and Care plans (STL5, STL19, STL24, STL30, STL25). Understanding the individual needs of students and be responsible for attending to their general welfare, personal needs and personal hygiene. To follow their care plan (STL41). Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom. Encourage students to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage in all activities (STL20) Promoting independence and use strategies to reward and recognise achievement (STL18, STL23, STL25) Deal appropriately with the medical and hygiene needs of students as per the Academy s procedures. Working with small groups of students and to take responsibility for their learning, ensuring that they understand tasks and learning objectives (STL1, STL2, STL18, STL19, STL23, STL25, STL26, STL30). Liaise with other professionals from within the Academy where appropriate and as instructed. Support for the Teachers by Within an agreed system of supervision, to work with the teacher to develop lessons, work plans and the classroom environment (STL5, STL23, STL24, STL31). Monitoring students responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement, progress as directed. Providing detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupil achievement, progress, problems etc (STL9, STL17, STL23, STL24, STL29, STL30).
2 Establishing and maintain constructive relationships with parents/carers and where appropriate participating in feedback sessions with parents alongside the teacher (STL20, STL24, STL30). Promoting good behaviour in line with individual behaviour plans. To be proactive in managing behaviour and promote self-control, independence and integration (STL19). Supporting pupil transitions and attend parents evenings as appropriate (STL20, STL60). Accompanying teachers and classes on educational visits (STL 59). Working with the class teacher to complete administration tasks and prepare displays (STL16, STL31). Support for the Academy Being aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, health and safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person (STL3, STL20). Contributing to overall ethos/work/aims of the Academy (STL20, STL21, STL22). Contributing to the identification and execution of appropriate out of Academy learning activities which consolidate and extend work carried out in class (STL23, STL24). Attending and participate in regular meetings, and in training and other activities as required (STL21). Assisting in the general care of the Academy environment (STL31, STL57). Assisting with students at the beginning and end of the day and in the playground as required (STL3, STL41, STL19). Supporting the appraisal system for support staff (STL21). Within an agreed system of supervision, to facilitate learning during short periods of teacher absence for planned meetings (STL1, STL5, STL21, STL23). Support for the Curriculum Within an agreed system of supervision, to deliver learning and teaching activities and adjust these when necessary (STL2, STL8, STL11, STL18, STL23, STL25, STL26). Taking responsibility for management of stock levels and for maintenance / quality /safety of specialist equipment (STL31). Using and preparing specialist equipment, plans and resources necessary to support learning activities, taking into account pupil s interests, language and cultural backgrounds (STL7, STL8, STL11, STL18, STL31). Assisting with the development of Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills and to support their use in learning activities (STL6, STL11, STL18, STL23, STL25, STL26, STL27). Undertaking broadly similar duties commensurate with the level of the post as required by the Principal. Other Duties: 1. To participate in annual performance appraisals and undertake relevant staff development. 2. To be responsible for the health and safety of self and others (in accordance with the Academy s Health & Safety Policy). 3. Providing cover in other areas as required. 4. To carry out any other appropriate duties requested by the Chief Executive or Head of Department. 5. To make secure all buildings on leaving the site.

To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students and young adults responsible for (or come into contact with) in accordance with the Academy s Child Protection Policy & Procedures The above list is indicative and not exhaustive. The Teaching Assistant (level 2) is expected to carry out all such additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the role. Both Level 2 and 3 National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the TA job description. A TA will be expected to meet the Level 2 standards and then progress to level 3. Practical Skills Basic understanding of child development and learning. Ability to self evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities. Willingness to administer emergency medication, after training. Clean driving licence Understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation. Mini bus licence.
6 Communication Ability to relate well to students and adults. Ability to work constructively as part of a team, to understand classroom roles and responsibilities and own position within those. Ability to communicate confidently with students, parents and other professionals. Knowledge of Pecs and Makaton. Personal Qualities Patient Confident Technology / IT Skills Ability to effectively use ICT to support learning, or to undertake training to do so. Ability to use other technology to support learning eg video, photocopier etc Good numeracy/literacy skills Education and Training Requirement to participate in training/development as and when identified. Willingness to participate in other development and training opportunities. NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent qualifications/experience.
