Teachers are continuing to build students understanding of the content standards within their grade level. Progress is constantly assessed and monitored while instruction is adjusted to ensure all students master the grade level expectations. Our teachers are focused and committed to building a strong foundation for each student in preparation for the demands of the coming year and years beyond. Soon students in grades 3-6 will test their mastery of the grade level standards as they take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) also known as the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The CAASPP as well as district and classroom assessments are used to monitor student progress and guide instruction. By analyzing student assessment results, we are better able to monitor student achievement, our program and make changes as necessary. In addition to the instruction of grade level content standards, teachers in every classroom are supporting students acquisition of critical life skills such as organization, responsibility and civic duty. Van Buren STARS provides students with a clear framework and understanding of the expectations of our school and the community at large. Whether in the classroom, on the playground, at the lunch tables, in the hallways, in the bathrooms or at assemblies students are rewarded for being Safe, There and ready, Acting responsibly, being Respectful and Showing compassion. STARS Bucks, STARS Cards, monthly awards and Principal Awards are given to students modeling STARS behavior across our campus. As with our academic assessments, we also check for understanding and mastery of our behavior expectations throughout the year. All staff does this informally each day with students across the campus. So, as we build student knowledge and academic mastery we are also building responsible, positive members of our school community. As with academic learning, students often need reteaching and reviewing of the behavior expectations set before them. Therefore, we will be holding a mid-year STARS assembly with each grade level to review, reteach and remind students of our STARS expectations. This will allow the teachers and me to ensure students fully understand not only the expectations we hold for each of them, but the systems in place for both reward and consequence for their behavior here at school. Our goal is always to communicate our belief that positive behavior supports positive learning outcomes and creates a positive school culture for all. When students are Safe, There and ready to learn, Responsible, Respectful and Compassionate then we have a climate where learning is the priority. The final, and perhaps most critical, piece to supporting our students academic and behavior success, of course, is you! When children see consistency in the expectations of the adults around them, they are better able to consistently rise to those expectations. Your student should successfully demonstrate Safe, There and ready, Act responsibly, be Respectful, and Show compassion at home and anywhere they go. I encourage you to use our STARS behavior with your children every day. Additionally, if you model STARS behavior, your student will see that you value positive behavior as well. When the family and school work together to communicate both academic and behavior expectations, students grow and achieve successfully and become positive role models for others as well! What a perfect combination our Roadrunners will be!! Thank you, Connie Roe Principal A Note From Your PTA Well, Winter was a bust. Hopefully Spring doesn't turn into the "new summer" and dry us all up. We have a busy month of March ahead with many activities happening. Packets for our final fundraisers of the year, See's Candies and Mixed Bags, will come home this week. Orders will be due on March 11th, and products will be sent home during the week of the 21st. The annual Band/ Orchestra concert is happening on Wednesday, March 2nd, in the VBE MPR, for grades 4-6. Other activities/events include: Science on the Go, Chess Masters, 4th and 5th grade Walk Through CA/Revolution programs, the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation's Shamrock N Run on the 6th, Popsicle Fridays returning on the 11th, wear green Spirit Day on the 17th, and Spring class parties on the 25th. After months of practices, our musical theatre performers will be ready to shine on stage at Bryant Ranch Elementary on March 17, 18 & 19. More details can be found on pg. 4 in this newsletter. Ticket order forms have already been sent home, but if you need a new one, you can find them in the school office or on the VBE website. On March 10th, please join us for our PTA Association Meeting and Open House. Starting at 5:30pm, we will be voting in the new PTA Executive Board and presenting Founder's Day awards. Once the meeting has adjourned, you can enjoy dinner from Craftsman, El Cantarito and Fun -O-Cakes until 7:30PM. Classrooms will be open from 6:30-7:30PM. Thanks for participating in the Pennies for Patients program to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Your contributions do help. Also, a big thanks to all of the families that joined us at our Islands restaurant night. I was so happy to see new and familiar faces enjoying dinner that evening. There will be no restaurant night for March, but we'll be back with a new one in April. Yearbook's are now on sale for $20. Due date TBD in June. Recognitions ($5) must be turned in by March 18th. See flyer for detailed info. The YB Cover Competition form must also be turned in by March 18th. Encourage your artistic students to enter something special.
