1 Chisholm Chargers Principally Speaking: January 2016 Welcome back as we start of the 2 nd semester of the school year. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful winter break getting to spend quality time with family and friends. This month s newsletter will be shortened since we are coming off a break, but we wanted to highlight some important dates and share information relevant to this time of year. As we move into the winter season, I wanted to remind parents that one important communication tool that can be used to get information with regards to school or severe weather is the SchoolWay app. Once downloaded this app needs to be configured to receive push notifications from any Edmond School. We recently received information from our Box Top coordinator, Jennifer Compton, that Chisholm is receiving a check for $ This money is usually paid out twice a year. We appreciate everyone s support and efforts by turning in Box Tops that bring additional funds back in to support the school and our many programs. This year we are having Donuts for Dads over 2 Fridays to help with parking and overcrowding in the cafeteria. The January 22 nd date is suggested for students with the last names A-K. The January 29 th date is suggested for students with the last names L-Z. On both dates we will begin at 7:55 with donuts in the cafeteria. Once you ve finished in the cafeteria, dads are welcome to read a book with their children in the media center or child s classroom. Dads are also welcomed to attend Charge Up, which will take place in the Media Center starting around 8:30. Parents that are wishing their children transfer schools for the school year can begin picking up transfer request forms at any Edmond school on January 13 th. Those completed forms will need to be turned into to the Edmond Public Schools Administrative Center, 1001 W. Danforth, starting on January 20 th where they receive a time and date stamp. The acceptance or denial of requests will be determined by available classroom space in the receiving school. 2 Bits & Bytes from Mrs. Morgan Do you find yourself waiting on your child often? Sometimes, children, like adults, can speed things up when they have a deadline to meet. One app that is helpful with this is the Sand Timer app. It is a free download and you can set the timer to as little or as long as you would like. Kids will like watching the sand flow as the time counts down. Posts by Plant Happy timing! As we bring in the New Year and second semester, we are expanding our efforts to connect and support families in our building. We will be offering a book study for parents during the day facilitated by our psychologist, Mary Kelly. Parenting is not for whimps! It is the most difficult work you will ever do! If you are interested in ramping up your skills or just getting confirmation that you are on the right track, consider joining our book study. We will explore the topic of failure and how it helps children to increase their resiliency to overcome obstacles through the book, The Gift of Failure: How the best parents learn to let go so their children can succeed by Jessica Lahey. Ms. Lahey helps parents learn how to instill competence, independence and intrinsic motivation in their children by guiding children through their mistakes. The group is limited to 24 parents who can commit to eight weeks of reading, discussion and sharing journeys through our own failures and successes. There will be a few ground rules for the group that will ensure understanding and to make it a safe place for us to share this journey. If you are interested in joining the group please contact Julie Plant for details. Counselor s Corner... Helping Children Succeed in School The start of the New Year is always a time of resolutions. Most adults make New Year s resolutions but children need to have goals also. Here is how to help your child learn to set- and achieve goals. At the beginning of the week, help your child identify one challenging- but attainable goal. It might be turning in a book report on time. It might be getting 90% correctly on the spelling test. Have your child write the goal on a piece of paper. Post it on the refrigerator or corkboard. Talk about how to accomplish the goal. Help your child break the goal down in steps. For example, You could read two chapters every day. Then you can spend a day writing your report and another day revising it. As the week progresses, ask how things are going. If your child falls behind in reading, for example, a ten-minute extension of bedtime might encourage him to catch up. At the end of the week, help your child evaluate how well she did. Did she attain the goal? Why or why not? Most important, praise your child for trying. Then set a new goal for next week. MEDIA CENTER NEWS Tom Watson, author of the Stick Dog series, will be visiting with fourth and fifth grade students at Chisholm Elementary on January 27. His books will be available for pre-order and will be autographed during his visit. Mr. Watson is coming to Oklahoma to promote his newest book in the series, Stick Dog Tries to Take the Donuts. Best of Books is providing us with this wonderful opportunity to meet a nationally known author. Watch Thursday folders for more information about book orders.
