Chute Dear Parent/Guardian: We are extremely excited about the positive energy at G.L.Armstrong School. Our students and staff continue to work collaboratively to improve student learning on a daily basis. During our PA day we focused our discussion on Transforming Learning Everywhere ; differentiated instruction, understanding the importance of mental health and overall well-being. We also are continuing to examine how we deal with students who are having difficulty managing their emotions. We will continue to examine our own practices, look for ways to improve, take responsible risks in our learning in order to move forward. School Council: What an amazing group of volunteers who work tirelessly to help provide more opportunities for our students. Our next school council meeting is on Monday March 7 th from 6:30-7:30pm in the music room. Everyone is welcome. School council is working hard to plan our next Family Fun Night on March 23 rd from 6:00-7:30pm. EQAO Update: From Wednesday, May 25 to Wednesday, June 8, student s in grade 3 and 6 will be participating in the Education Quality and Accountability Office s (EQAO s) Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. In six sessions, students will complete a variety of assessment activities designed to allow them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge relating to reading, writing and mathematics as described in The Ontario Curriculum. The assessment is administered provincewide and is developed by assessment experts and Ontario teachers to reflect curriculum expectations. Our teachers will be using the results of this assessment to help develop next steps for student learning and drive teacher instruction. We ask parents of these children to please avoid appointments during these two weeks and help ensure a timely arrival to school.

2 School Travel Plan: G.L. Armstrong has been chosen by the City of Hamilton to conduct an analysis of how students are getting to and from school. Our school will be conducting a week long survey after the March Break to determine how students are getting to and from school. We will have a committee to review the results of the survey and make recommendations. If you are interested in being a member of the School Travel Plan Committee please contact Mr. Trimble or Ms. Chute. H.W.D.S.B. Days of Significance for March: Please click on the following link to see all the days of significance for March and their associated meanings: Nutrition and Milk Programs: We have adjusted the delivery time of our nutrition program. Snacks are available for students first thing on Monday/Wednesday/ Friday mornings. All classrooms from kindergarten through grade 6 have a nutrition bin of food delivered to their classroom. Students in grades 6/7 through 8 will be participating in a grab and go nutrition program available at the office. Our Milk Program continues during second nutrition break. - Our Milk Program is on a ticket system. Single tickets will be available for $1.00 or you may purchase a set of ten tickets for $ There are a separate tickets for white or chocolate milk to ensure your child receives your preferred type of milk. - Tickets will have a space for you to write your child s name so that they can be placed into lunch boxes at your discretion. 3 GLA Athletics Volleyball Teams: Players will be attending the McMaster Canadian Intercollege Sports (C.I.S.) championships on Thursday March 10. What a great opportunity for our students to high level skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Thank you Ms. Strecker and Mr. Forman. Development Basketball Team (Gr.4,5,6): This Is our first year participating in this league. Students have been developing their basketball and fair play skills. Thanks to Ms. Banks and Mr. Caudle for providing this opportunity. Running Club: Attention all grade 6,7 and 8 students --- The running club will begin following the March Break. Please listen to announcements for additional details. JR. Basketball: Attention all grade 6 and 7 students --- The JR. Basketball season will begin after March Break. Thank you to Mr. Duckworth, Mr. Forman and Mr. Manson. GLA Arts Annie: After months of preparation we are done to the final two weeks. Several performances will be occurring between March 7 and March 11. We have many visitors coming to G.L. Armstrong to enjoy music, drama and dance Guests include: our school trustee, Mrs. Danko, guests of local nursing homes, representatives from HWDSB and students from local elementary schools. Thanks to all our students and parents for their many hours of practice. Thanks to our many volunteers for creating costumes, sets and props. To our staff, Mme. Austin Ms. Clarke, Ms. Iarocci, and Mrs. Zaroski, on behalf of our students, thank you!!! What an amazing experience for our students to expand their creativity and skills. Open Art Lunches: Reminder to our intermediate students to check the board outside of the art room for opportunities to work on your visual art projects at nutrition breaks. Thank you Ms. Strecker for providing this opportunity Dancefest: Congratulations to our Dance team who participated in a daylong event at Sir Allan Mac Nab High School. Your performance was amazing! So much energy and enthusiasm! Thanks to Ms. Mousseau, Mme. Austin and our parent volunteers.

4 ART SUPPLIES WANTED! The art program would appreciate the following art supply donations so that we can continue to produce creative and varied art projects: - baby food jars - empty cereal boxes Exciting Opportunities Jr. Empowerment: Thank you Ms. Dahmer for providing some of our students the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of HWDSB elementary students at Sherwood. What a great way of having our students reflect on world issues and seek opportunities to make an impact. 905 Raptors Game: 60 of our grade 6,7 and 8 students enjoyed a fun filled learning experience to the Hersey Centre in Mississauga. Thanks to Mr. Lees and Mrs. Strecker for arranging this opportunity. Skating with the Cops: Thank you to Officer Sarah and Mr. Lees for providing 30 of our grade 6 students with the opportunity to skate with the police at the First Ontario Centre. GoldiRocks: Our kindergarten students will be travelling to Mohawk College for the GoldiRocks performance in April. Forms will be coming home soon. Scholars Program: Selected grade 3 and 6 students will be participating in additional numeracy and literacy activities on a weekly basis. Thank you to Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Manson and Ms. Iarocci. Go Girls: We are very enthusiastic to be working with a great group of girls in grades 5 and 6. The Girls Group meets twice a week. These girls are focusing on learning leadership skills that they can apply throughout the school community as well as into their lives outside of school. Our current focus is developing and maintaining friendships, cooperation, and being kind all the time. The girls group has participated in activities that have emphasized the importance of positive selfesteem. With a partner, the girls traced a silhouette of their friend's body and filled in the silhouette with positive words about their friend and decorated them. Our next focus will be on the importance of using kind words and to avoid spreading rumours and gossip. The girls will be making homemade lip gloss using

5 Vaseline and Kool Aid. We are extremely proud of the girls. Thanks to Ms. Miller and Ms. Iarocci. 21 Day Challenge: For the past four years, students and staff of GLA have been involved in the 21 Day, Acts of Kindness. Last year our students, staff and members of the community documented over intentional acts of kindness during the 21 days. We can t wait to continue this tradition starting on March 31 st, School Spirit House Teams: Team spirit is high at G.L. Armstrong. Students continue to work together to collect points to help their respective houses. Netball and spirit days are in full swing. Students are reminded to listen to announcements and to check the athletics board to make sure they know when their House League Netball team plays. Here are the standings, as of March 1 st : Red:2135 Green: 2187 Blue:2483 Yellow: 2735 It s a close race. Set your goals high and encourage one another to try!!! Spirit Wear We can t wait to see our new gear. We anticipate that items ordered will be delivered to the school by Wed. March 23. Pizza, Pita and Smoothie Days: Pizza days continue every Friday at second nutrition break.
