3 OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: Identify important emerging and re-emerging infections. Discuss epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management (including newer therapies such as fecal microbiota transplantation) of Clostridium diffi cile infection. List recommendations regarding screening and baseline work up prior to referring patients for Hepatitis C treatment. Identify strategies to prevent transmission of HCV. Review the current FDA approved, available anti-hcv therapy for treatment of both naïve and experienced patients. Outline the appropriate management of the acute Hepatitis C patient (with real life, case-based examples). Identify issues related to primary care of HIV-infected patients, including the prevention of HIV transmission. Review morbidity and mortality associated with acute and chronic wounds. Discuss the types of chronic wounds and infectious etiology specifi c to these, with special focus on diabetic foot ulcers. Describe antibiotic use in the management of chronic wounds. Review management of chronic wounds using a holistic approach. Recognize the importance of using local and regional antibiograms to guide antibiotic prescription. Describe the need and benefi t of collaboration with local, state, and national organizations, including Illinois Department of Public Health and CDC Get Smart with Antibiotics programs, in efforts to reduce antimicrobial resistance. Outline the role and accomplishments of the initiative, Downstate Illinois Partnership Against Antibiotic Resistance. Identify new antibiotics and their role in practice.
