2 The Chicago Cultural Mile is Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Roosevelt Road and eastward to the Museum Campus. The Chicago Cultural Mile Association (CCMA) is an independent not for profit dedicated to raising awareness of the unique strengths and diverse offerings available to visitors frequenting this strategic location. O V E R V I E W Last year the CCMA launched one of the most exciting initiatives in its history, The Halloween Gathering Festival and Parade. This powerful event was free to the public and united Chicago s diverse creative community for a daytime festival culminating in a magical nighttime parade. Drawing together world-renowned institutions including the Field Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago as well as unique local organizations like Louder Than a Bomb and guilds of artists in assorted fields, this dramatic display activated Halloween as the artist s holiday and delighted a combined audience of 200,000. In 2016, the CCMA plans to build upon the success of the inaugural year by engaging even more of Chicago s esteemed and aspiring cultural groups and by organizing a series of Town Hall Meetings/Workshops to provide support to interested parade participants. The program will provide tips on such topics as Adding Lighting Elements to Your Performance, Choosing the Right Audio System, How to Engage the Audience, Building Oversized Puppets, and more. We also will add the Chase Promenade North Tent to the event footprint so that we can increase the family-friendly crafts, kid s activities, and performances to the Festival portion of the Halloween Gathering.

In addition to the Kid s Costume Procession around the Great Lawn, the Festival features the following: Theatricks Stage: Located in Wrigley Square, this stage will feature theater, improve, comedy and live music. Enchant Tent: Located in the Chase Promenade North tent, this area will feature hula hoop, poi-spinning, dance and other lessons as well as dance, music and acrobatic performances. It also will host smaller tents with ghost stories and other spoken word performances. This is our doers tent. Conjure Creative Tent: Located in the Chase Promenade South tent, this area will feature craft tables, mask-making workshops, live music, face painting, snack giveaways and other activities. This is our makers tent. Jester Stage: Located in the Sir Georg Solti Garden, this area will feature magic, acrobatics, juggling, stilt-walking, live music, tarot card readings, interactive installations and more.

The parade, traveling north on Columbus from Balbo to Monroe, will be led by a new class of Creative Spirit Fellows, 13 of Chicago s most influential creative leaders. Their dramatic entrance will set the tone for the spectacle to follow. By bringing the power of Chicago s creative communities to life, The Halloween Gathering is on its way to becoming one of Chicago s iconic annual events. Join us for our second year as we unleash the City s creative forces and celebrate that which is at the heart of Chicago itself its dynamic cultural community. The creative communities plant their flag, celebrating their importance to the cultural, educational and economic vitality of the city.

A R T I S T S O F T O D A Y Each year our parade will be led by 13 Creative Spirit Fellows, individuals whose creative practice has animated the City. A L L F O R O N E A N D O N E F O R A L L We honor and respect all of our diverse creative communities and seek to engender a deep democratic spirit. We strive to bring together on one playing field the most established and esteemed along with the new and aspiring, the respected and established along with the upstarts. We celebrate the wide arc of creative forms as well as the broad spectrum of artistic genres, practices, disciplines, and guilds.

6 T H I S I S N O T Y O U R F A T H E R S P A R A D E This is not a parade for dignitaries, politicians or sponsorship floats. This is a celebration of cultural organizations and artists of every sort all of whom bring passion and creative problem solving to the challenge of parading. It is parade as art as our contingents combine costumes, masks, spectacle, music, movement, audience engagement, messaging and lighting elements. Following the parade we encourage after-parties as the entire Cultural Mile comes alive in celebration. D A Y T I M E P L A Y T I M E The Halloween Gathering is a family-friendly event that is free and open to the public and begins with a daytime festival in Millennium and Grant Parks. The festival takes place from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and features craft and movement workshops, live performances, art installations and a kids costume procession. As dusk arrives, the crowd moves to Columbus for the centerpiece of the event, The Halloween Gathering Parade.
