4 Difficult equation, perfect solution Up to 80 % lower emissions While fossil fuels may not last forever, the emissions they generate appear limitless. What is needed now are new sources of renewable energy that will meet the rising demand for energy and help tackle climate change. It is no easy task, as the raw material used for renewable fuels must not compete with food production. UPM s innovative new biofuel, UPM BioVerno is a textbook solution to the problem: it is made using forest industry residues sourced from sustainably managed forests. UPM BioVerno offers the same high quality as the traditional fossil fuels it replaces. In fact, it is significantly better, as UPM BioVerno generates up to 80% fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. This kind of innovation is required for Europe to meet its climate targets and improve its energy independence.

7 May we present: The home of UPM BioVerno More than a century ago, wooden sewing spools were manufactured at Kaukas mills. Today, our novel biofuel production at the same site relies on brand new technology and meets completely different needs but one thing remains the same: wood. Each year, UPM Kaukas mills in Lappeenranta receive more than 5 million cubic metres of timber, sourced from Finland s sustainably managed forests. The mill site uses all parts of wood efficiently, and produces pulp, sawn timber, paper and energy. Part of pulp is used in our own manufacturing process, some is sold externally. The same applies to our energy production it is used at our own plants, but also to heat and power homes locally. The UPM Research Centre in Lappeenranta specialises in the development of fibre raw materials and production processes. An innovative process developed at the centre utilises tall oil, a residue of pulp production, to manufacture diesel fuel. The biorefinery produces 120 million litres of UPM BioVerno diesel annually. This clean, renewable diesel is made without increasing wood harvesting.

9 UPM BioVerno is a genuine locally produced diesel, as it is made using renewable Finnish raw materials and manufactured closer to home than any fossil diesel. It has been awarded the Finnish Key Flag Symbol in recognition of its Finnish origins. UPM BioVerno is considerably more advanced than traditional biodiesels as it is compatible with all diesel engines, including cars, buses and trucks, without modification. UPM BioVerno is usable as such but is primarily used in blends with fossil fuels. With 80% lower CO 2 emissions, it is clearly superior to fossil fuels. UPM BioVerno has been tested at a number of independent research centres, and proven work just like ordinary diesel. In fact, UPM BioVerno has already garnered a number of international prizes, including the European Commission s Sustainable Energy Europe Award in UPM BioVerno is available at St1 and ABC petrol stations in Finland.
