Discuss the common issues relating to delirium and Acute Brain Injury, including assessment and approaches to prevent and manage delirium in acute care settings. Compare alternative therapies in the treatment of brain injury and the evidence-base for those therapies. Describe the influence that TBI has on the aging process and strategies to promote successful aging after TBI. Describe current standards of practice for treatment of TBI in a clinical setting and strategies to improve the quality of care. Describe strategies to assess falls risk and balance in individuals with TBI, and rehabilitative strategies for patients with identified risk of falling. Discuss the patient experience of TBI and the role of clinicians in supporting patient recovery. 3 Faculty Paul Aravich, PhD is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Anatomy within Internal Medicine- Division of Geriatrics, at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He has won teaching awards for his medical education and has served as Chair of the Virginia Brain Injury Council, and is a board member of the Mary Buckley Foundation for brain injury survivors and their families. Dr. Aravich has served as an advocate for helmet laws and research funding and services for brain injury. He has presented to a wide array of audiences on issues relating to the brain and brain injury. Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at Indiana University. He is a center scientist at Indiana s University Center for Aging Research and at the Regenstrief Institute. His research focuses on improving the quality of life and care of older adults with acute and chronic cognitive disorders, and system-based approaches across different care settings. He has authored many papers and won awards for his geriatric research. He has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous research projects focusing on dementia, Alzheimer s screening, the aging brain, pharmacology and older adults, cognitive impairment, and other topics relating to older adults and the brain. Rocco Chiappini, MD is Associate Medical Director of Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center and serves as Director, Brain Injury Center, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Crotched Mountain. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Following an internship in internal medicine at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, Dr. Chiappini completed his residency at Johns Hopkins and Sinai Hospitals. Dr. Chiappini is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Chiappini is a recipient of the Arthur Siebens Award 1996 from Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of numerous publications including "Rational Prescription of Exercise in Managing Low Back Pain" which appeared in Critical Reviews in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Debra Fournier, ARNP, MSN is a Nurse Practitioner in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. She focuses on general trauma as well as traumatic brain injury. Ms. Fournier received her MSN from Yale s School of Nursing. Ken Kimball is an artist and designer who experienced a near-fatal brain aneurysm at the age of 37 during a mountain bike ride, due to a vascular malformation in his brain. His recovery included physical rehabilitation, as well as a return to his art. Through his paintings, which reflect the experience of living with TBI, he progressed through the phases of physical, mental, and emotional recovery. His recent works have been displayed at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and he has been featured in several recent news articles. Marjorie King, PhD, ATC, PT, FACSM is Associate Professor of Athletic Training and the Graduate Program Coordinator for Athletic Training at Plymouth State University. She has over 20 years of clinical experience and has practiced in a variety of settings, including clinics and rehabilitation centers.

4 She has won several awards for her athletic training work and is active in professional associations. Her research interests include core and postural stability and injury prevention and she is currently working on a research study to assess the risk of falling in seniors and help them improve their balance to prevent falls, through the use of pressure-sensitive testing equipment. Jon Lurie, MD, MS is Associate Professor of Medicine, Orthopaedics and of The Dartmouth Institute (TDI). He is a Portal Director of SYNERGY at the Dartmouth Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Co-Director of the Center for Translation of Rehabilitation Engineering Advances and Technology (TREAT) and Director of the Clinical Trials Unit of TDI. He has served as an investigator on multiple research projects and is currently the PI for the Randomized ActiveStep Comparative Effectiveness Trial, funded by AHRQ. He is also a clinician, educator, and speaker, and has published extensively. Thomas McAllister, MD is the Millennium Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology, Director of the Section of Neuropsychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School, and Vice Chair for Neuroscience Research for the Department of Psychiatry. He is a past president of the American Neuropsychiatric Association. Dr. McAllister received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He served on the faculties of the University of Kentucky, and the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Dartmouth Medical School in He has a long-standing interest in the neuropsychiatric problems of individuals with traumatic brain injury, and his research has explored catecholaminergic modulation of cognitive deficits following mild and moderate TBI as well as neurobiological effects and genetic predictors of outcome of brain injury in athletes. Dawna Pidgeon, PT works in Rehabilitation Medicine and in the Balance and Vestibular Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. She is an active member of the New Hampshire Falls Risk Reduction Task Force, and Chair of Dartmouth-Hitchcock s internal task force. She has also worked to develop and disseminate a screening process for patients identified as being at risk for falls. She has presented at national and local conferences, and at community events.
