2 Future Trends in Rehabilitation and Technology in Traumatic Brain Injury THE BEST REHABILITATION HOSPITAL MEANS THE BEST REHABILITATION EDUCATION. The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is ranked the Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America, in part because it fully integrates research, clinical care, and education, through the Continuing Education (CE) programs offered by the RIC Academy. The RIC Academy CE programs help you keep abreast of changes in your field. The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice when appropriate as well as based on the collective clinical experience of our staff. RIC Academy courses are taught by interdisciplinary teams of recognized specialists from RIC and visiting experts from across the country and around the world. DESCRIPTION Modern research in neuroscience and advances in technology have added new dimensions to our understanding and management of traumatic brain injury. This course will present the latest research and clinical advances that impact on current and future trends in interdisciplinary management of persons with brain injury. Issues related to incorporating sexuality into rehabilitation, a new approach to facilitating coma recovery and advances in the management of attention will be a focus. Other topics that will be addressed include medical issues, vestibular rehabilitation, behavior management, use of computer aids and apps for cognitive-communication rehabilitation, preparation for discharge, family adaptation after brain injury, and ethical issues related to use of social media by individuals with traumatic brain injury. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Physiatrists, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Speech-Language Pathologists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nurses, and Other Professionals Interested in Brain Injury Rehabilitation COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Recognize the impact of TBI on sexuality and gain comfort in addressing it within the context of rehabilitation Explain the conceptual framework underlying the Familiar Auditory Sensory Training (FAST) protocol and the neurobehavioral effect of the specified FAST dose relative to placebo.
