1 EASTERN REGIONAL STROKE CONFERENCE 2015 May 15, 2015 Registration 8:00 am Program 8:20 am - 4:30 pm Hilton Greenville Greenville, North Carolina Following the Evidence to Achieve the New Normal Jointly provided by Eastern AHEC Department of Nursing and Allied Health Education Vidant Health, Center for Learning and Performance Office of Continuing Medical Education Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University

2 DESCRIPTION Stroke remains a leading cause of adult disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the US. While Stroke is caused by a form of cardiovascular disease, it disables more than it kills. North Carolinians suffer strokes at a higher incidence than the national average and the death rate is double the national average. Every 20 minutes someone in NC is hospitalized with a stroke. Following a stroke, patients experience a variety of neurophysiologic changes that impact clinical outcomes and quality of life. Beginning in the acute care phase and extending through rehabilitation and return to the community, sequelae such as spasticity, spatial neglect, dysphagia, and depression can affect length of stay in the hospital, readmissions, long term functional capability, and life satisfaction. Participants in the 2015 Eastern Regional Stroke Conference will hear evidence from expert local and national researchers and clinicians to address gaps in stroke care practices that will enable them to improve knowledge and guide practice improvement for stroke patients. TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Recreation Therapists, Emergency Medical Service personnel, Case Managers and others who comprise the interdisciplinary team needed to provide a comprehensive continuum of care to stroke patients.
