5 2014 EDUCATION CONFERENCE OPENING REMARKS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, :30 AM-8:45 AM Lora Miller - Executive Director, BIAI Gary Turner - TBI Survivor and Advocate PRESENTATION: Why We re Here SESSON #1 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, :45 AM-10:00 AM Dr. Durand-Sanchez is a brain injury rehabilitation physician at IU Health Methodist Hospital, the Neuroscience Center of Excellence, Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, and Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is or has been involved in several research projects on brain injury, stroke, spasticity and post-tbi cognition, as well as in the writing of book chapters on neurorehabilitation topics. She received her medical degree from the University of Guadalajara School of Medicine in Jalisco, Mexico. Following completion of internship at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, she trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Baylor College of Medicine/The University of Texas Health Science Center PM&R Alliance in Houston, where she received the Oliver R. Smith Resident Achievement Award upon graduation. Dr. Durand completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Traumatic Brain Injury and Polytrauma, and one in Advanced Traumatic Brain Injury and Spasticity management, with a strong focus on research of motor recovery. She has written scientific posters and papers for academic meetings; she has also participated in academic lectures and conferences in the United States and Mexico. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, Association of Academic Physiatrists and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. PRESENTATION: Management of Headache after Traumatic Brain Injury An overview of various sources of headache in the context of brain injury, as well as their characteristics, usual symptoms, and treatment options. SESSION #2 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, :30 AM-11:45 AM Research shows that the quality of a couple s relationship can significantly impact a person s ability to recover well after brain injury. Common themes of relationship distress exist that impact the satisfaction of these relationships. Brain injury professionals are only starting to grasp an understanding of what factors affect the quality and sustainability of a relationship following a brain injury, and what can be done to improve the relationship. In this presentation, the audience can expect to learn about the common themes of marital distress, the specific effects of brain injury on a couple s relationship, and learn about the recently developed Couples CARE program to improve the quality of a couple s relationship following a brain injury. PRESENTATION: Couples Care: An Intervention To Help Improve Couples Relationships After A Brain Injury Dr. Backhaus is a Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana s comprehensive outpatient brain injury Neuro Rehab Center. Her primary focus is working with adults who have acquired brain injuries, both providing neuropsychological assessments and formulating appropriate interdisciplinary treatment plans in assisting individuals reintegrate back to the community. Her passion is working with families as well, with the overall goal of the survivor achieving positive long-term outcome following brain injury. Dr. Backhaus developed a 16-week treatment intervention, the Brain Injury Coping Skills Group (BICS) that won the 2009 McDowell Award for Best Presentation presented by the American Society for Neurorehabilitation. She has completed several RTCs with publication on studies investigating this treatment and won one of the Healthcare Heroes of the Year in her community in 2001 for her work in neurorehabilitation. She is asked to teach this intervention to clinicians throughout the rehabilitation field, both nationally and internationally. She also developed a Peer Mentoring Program for brain injury survivors and family members, and chairs a support group called Bridging the Gap, specifically designed to meet the needs of families and caregivers in addition to brain injury survivors. Currently, Dr. Backhaus is the primary investigator in developing a new program, in collaboration with other professionals, on improving marital quality and satisfaction after brain injury. This intervention will ultimately be manualized. Her primary interests include assisting individuals with brain injury to achieve better adaptation, social integration, perception of quality and satisfaction with life, and community and / or vocational reintegration on a long-term basis. 6 LUNCH AND KEYNOTE ADDRESS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 11:45 AM-1:00 PM Historically, brain injury has been treated as an event, like a broken bone, by the medical community. The emphasis has been on the first one to two years post injury, after which, it has been believed that the medical issues are static. The purpose of this presentation is to educate the attendees on the myriad of medical problems that exist and develop well after the brain injury. This session will explain the historical approach to chronic brain injury, discuss mortality issues for individuals with brain injuries, discuss various medical disorders associated with brain injuries, raise awareness of, and vigilance for, medical issues that may develop long after a TBI, and explain why a brain injury should be approached as the beginning of a disease process. PRESENTATION: Brain Injury: From Treatment As An Event To A Chronic Disease Dr. Masel is the President and Medical Director of the Transitional Learning Center at Galveston. He received his Medical Degree from the Loyola University School of Medicine, and completed his post-graduate training at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He is a Board Certified Neurologist. After 16 years of private practice, he accepted his position with TLC. He holds clinical appointments in several departments at UTMB, and is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology. Dr. Masel has conducted research and published in the areas of brain injury rehabilitation including virtual reality, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, sleep abnormalities, metabolic abnormalities, hormonal dysfunction, and the long term medical issues from chronic brain injury. Dr. Masel is a Board member of the North American Brain Injury Society, and the Brain Injury Association of America, where he serves as the National Medical Director. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Brain Injury Association of Texas, the Innovations in Clinical Treatment Award from the North American Brain Injury Society and is the recipient of the 2013 Sheldon Berrol Clinical Services Award from the Brain Injury Association of America. SESSION #3 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM Using information gleaned from a 30 year treatment relationship, this lecture will use a case study format to illustrate key issues and challenges of aging following brain injury. Issues related to developmental challenges, psychosocial dysfunction and evolving medical, neurological, surgical and psychiatric illnesses associated with the chronic disease of brain injury will be discussed. PRESENTATION: Aging With Brain Injury: Peaks and Valleys Following Brain Injury As A Child Dr. O Shanick has been the Medical Director of the Center for Neurorehabilitation Services in Richmond, VA, since After attending Ohio State University, he entered the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and received his MD in His post-graduate studies were at Duke University Medical Center. His academic career includes faculty appointments at Duke University Medical Center, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Medical College of Virginia and, most recently, in the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Virginia Neurological Institute at the University of Virginia. He has authored more than 100 publications, including editing or co-editing three textbooks. As a result of his international reputation in neuropsychiatry and neurorehabilitation, he was asked to be the first National Medical Director of BIAA in 1996, a post he vacated in 2010 when he was elected Chair for BIAA s Board of Directors. His contributions to BIAA during his tenure were recognized by naming him Medical Director Emeritus. Dr. O Shanick is a member of the American Neuropsychiatric Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has previously chaired a panel developing evidence-based guidelines for the evaluation of mild traumatic brain injury and has received commendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control for his contributions to the CDC Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Work Group and the Report to Congress on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States: Steps to Prevent a Serious Public Health Problem submitted in September He currently sits on the Examination Committee selected by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry to develop the subspecialty Board examination in Brain Injury Medicine. 6

7 SESSION #4 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, :15 PM-4:30 PM Traumatic brain injury produces post-concussive symptoms during the earliest stages of injury. If these symptoms are not effectively managed, they can become prolonged, delay return to school and work, disrupt daily routines and activities, contribute to emotional distress, and strain relationships. Effective management during the first months following injury can enhance recovery, prevent prolonged and debilitating post-concussive symptoms, and facilitate timely return to school/work and social roles. Dr. Fastenau will provide an overview of concussion, describe the typical course of post-concussive symptoms following head trauma, and present clinical management strategies, including both general principles and symptom-specific therapies based on empirical research and published guidelines. Case studies will illustrate a multidisciplinary model for early management of post-concussive symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. PRESENTATION: Early Management of Post-Concussive Symptoms Following Traumatic Brain Injury Dr. Fastenau is the Professor of Neurology and Director of Clinical Neuropsychology in the Department of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University and in the Neurological Institute of University Hospital s Case Medical Center. He has been conducting research in Clinical Neuropsychology for 20 years, funded by various federal agencies, including National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Nursing Research, Center for Disease Control, and Rehabilitation Services Administration. He has published over 50 journal articles and chapters and presented 125 papers at national or international meetings. He has received several national awards including the American Psychological Association Dissertation Research Award, Epilepsy Foundation Junior Investigator Research Award, and the NIH/NINDS Junior Investigator Travel Award. In 2004, Dr. Fastenau was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Before moving to Case Medical Center, Dr. Fastenau was on faculty at Indiana University School of Medicine and Purdue School of Science in Indianapolis for 12 years, during which time he served as the Team Neuropsychologist for the Indianapolis Colts and provided concussion management for university and high school athletes throughout Indiana.
