13 Beelden voor de toekomst The archives of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision(Sound and Vision) in Hilversum, of EYE in Amsterdam, and of the National Archive in The Hague contain the visual history of the past 100 years. Films, documentaries, radiobroadcast, and television programmes comprise more than hours worth of material. The costs for creating this oeuvre have run into the billions. The educational, cultural, and economical value of this material is unprecedented. - We cannot let these collections go to waste Spread over a period of seven years, the FES (Fund for the reinforcement of Economic Structure) is providing a budget of 154 million Euros for the digitization of the Netherlands audiovisual memory. With it, the imminent threat of decay and loss of vulnerable films and video- and audiotapes is being taken away.

16 Vlaamse Regering - Regeerakkoord We willen een inhaalbeweging voor het behoud, het bewaren en het ontsluiten van het cultureel erfgoed, waaronder ook het rijke muzikale erfgoed. We zoeken oplossingen voor het probleem van digitale bewaring, archivering en ontsluiting. In nauw overleg met de mediasector, de archief-en erfgoedorganisaties en op basis van de verworven kennis binnen het IBBT richten we een Vlaams Instituut voor de archivering en ontsluiting van het audiovisueel erfgoed in Vlaanderen op (de Waalse Krook, Gent) 16

17 Vlaamse Regering Beleidsbrief media Ik blijf er groot belang aan hechten dat het audiovisueel (en multimediaal) materiaal in Vlaanderen op een duurzame wijze wordt gedigitaliseerd en bewaard voor de huidige en volgende generaties en dat het zo breed mogelijk kan worden geraadpleegd. Ik zal de vzw De Krook de opdracht geven om voor de zomer van 2011 een blauwdruk voor te leggen van dit strategisch en operationeel plan voor het Vlaams archiveringsinstituut. 17

33 De Krook and the new institute A physical, recognisable place for a digital future. With De krook in the design stage, this is a perfect moment for integrating such an institute But: an archiving institute is a project for Flanders as a whole, with a much broader vision than one site.
