2 school of television and digital media a unique offer The convergence of the media industry and digital new technologies creates new needs for the companies and institutions in the field of communication and heritage enrichment. New skills become essential, and new training programmes are called for, to provide solutions for these needs. The Institut national de l audiovisuel has determined to take advantage of its unique position as a curator of television and radio archives and as a producer of content for TV and digital media as well as of its experience in professional training, to create two MA courses which cater for the new challenges in the media industry. 2

3 pedagogical aims digital heritage management We train managers in charge of preserving and promoting the media heritage, in companies and institutions owning digital resources. We coach the future managers of digital heritage collections. production We train producers of fiction, documentaries, TV shows and content for new media. We coach tomorrow s professionals, in the field of television and digital media. 3

4 programme of the course The joint classes for archive managers and producers are centred on television and radio economics and history, legal aspects, media analysis, techniques of audiovisual production and broadcasting, and contemporary culture. The specific classes taught in each course represent 80% of the teaching. The specific classes for archive managers are centred on the cultural topics and issues of access to, and promotion of the audiovisual heritage. They focus on the techniques of digital assets management, and on project supervision in the field of digital heritage. The course teaches such topics as fund documentation and documentary engineering as well as digital and audiovisual assets management or audiovisual resources promotion policies in television and the Internet. The specific classes for producers are centred on the theoretical, aesthetic, intellectual, legal and financial bases of production. They focus on the development of skills in script doctoring, management, communication and negotiation. The course includes topics such as analysis and development of documentaries, fiction, TV shows and formats, content production for new medias or line production. The students benefit from all pedagogical and professional tools available to delve into the audiovisual heritage of the institute, to learn the techniques of television and digital media production and to understand the core mechanisms of the evolution of TV programmes and genres. organisation of the course The course spans over two years, divided into three semesters of teaching, and one semester dedicated to an internship in a company. The teaching represents around 800 hours. It includes cycles of seminars taught by the main specialists in the field of communication and digital media. In addition to this teaching, the students will participate in festivals and conferences on current topics in television and digital media. 4

5 teaching staff The classes are taught by academics and professionals from the digital media and audiovisual production world, as well as specific Ina experts and staff. The teachers are French and foreign specialists. Some of the classes are taught in English. The School welcomes internationally renowned professors working on the media industry. A scientific committee meets on a yearly basis to assess the pedagogical options and strategic choices of the School. The committee will bring together distinguished figures from the fields of cultural and communication studies and the world of television and higher education, in France and abroad. the international policy of the school an international perspective The MA courses for producers and archive managers are designed to be referential courses in Europe and closely blended with all the prominent figures of the French and international audiovisual field. partnerships We have signed agreements with : - UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (United States) - Ryerson's School of Radio and Television Arts (Canada) - Universidad Carlos III (Spain) - The Communication University of China (China) international policy The School aims at recruiting students from all over the world. 5

6 recruiting policy All students of any origin or background, with a BA or equivalent, in any field, can apply to the School. The aim of the teaching team is to bring together students of diverse origins and academic backgrounds. We will select candidates with a good general knowledge, high academic records, true professional assets, a capacity to adapt to new situations and the ability to anticipate and innovate. The candidates will have to be fluent in French and have an understanding of the audiovisual field and its expressions and techniques. 20 students for the archive managers programme, and 20 for the producers programme will be selected and accepted after a written exam and an interview with a jury. Prior to the selection, an application file will be examined by the selectors. 6

7 degrees and jobs At the end of this two-year course, the students will be awarded an MA Degree from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. The School trains future professionals who will be working in such diverse areas such as the audiovisual industry, the media industry, the museums or the field of education, in France and abroad. The students specializing in heritage management are meant to occupy positions such as TV collections manager, project supervisor in the field of audiovisual heritage promotion, and audiovisual and digital resources director. The students specializing in production are meant to occupy positions which stand at the core of the audiovisual and digital market, such as producer, content development director or TV programming advisor. All are trained and meant to occupy highly skilled jobs in audiovisual and media companies, public and private firms owning audiovisual funds, in information and communication management counseling, in organizations promoting audiovisual archives and institutions working in the field of digital heritage and production, and in all companies facing issues of management and promotion of digital assets. 7
