company PROFILE RINA SERVICES S.p.A. is the RINA Group company active in classification, certification, inspection and testing services. RINA is a multi-national Group which offers verification, certification, conformity assessment, marine classification, environmental enhancement, product testing, site and vendor supervision, training and engineering consultancy across a wide range of industries and services. RINA operates through a network of companies covering Marine, Energy, Infrastructures & Construction, Transport & Logistics, Food & Agriculture, Environment & Sustainability, Finance & Public Institutions and Business Governance. With a turnover of over 330 million Euros in 2014, over 2,750 employees, and 163 offices in 60 countries worldwide, RINA is recognized as an authoritative member of key international organizations and an important contributor to the development of new legislative standards.
Overview RINA has been operating in the marine sector since 1861, providing classification and certification services for merchant ships and is one of the world s leading classification societies recording a strong, consistent growth. The RINA marine services cover the entire life cycle of the ship, from initial design and construction to ship management, crew and port interface and scrapping related activities. These activities are carried out by the Operational Network while the Business Line Marine is in charge of developing value added services in addition to the core activities, such as advanced engineering services, environmental and energy-saving services, advisory services for shipyards and ship operators. In addition, the Business Line Marine is in charge of developing specific products, asset integrity management services, software tools and training courses for particular niche markets such as naval vessels, yachting and passenger ships. RINA serves owners and yards all over the world through its global office network and is also able to offer tailor-made services to meet specific client needs. Engineering Centres have been established in Italy, Korea, Turkey, China, Germany and Greece; Training Centres have been established as well to help shipyards and shipowners ensure that their technical staff and crews get the training they need and there is also the newly established Passenger Ship Centre of Excellence. At present, RINA classes a high-quality and diverse fleet of about 35 M GT and its order book includes all types of vessels and now stands at 600 newbuildings. RINA is also the global leader in mega-yacht classification and certification.
The Passenger Ship sector Historically, RINA has always been well-known for its technical excellence in the passenger and ro-ro ship sectors and today RINA is a leader in the cruise ship industry, at the service of the growing luxury pax-ferry market and leader in the ro-ro ferry sector. Over the past decade, RINA has surveyed 50 cruise ships built in Italy, France, Finland and Germany and has a classed fleet of over 40 major cruise ships in operation. The first luxury pax-ferry in the world was built by Fincantieri to RINA class. Thanks to its more than 150 years of experience, RINA has earned a well-deserved reputation for technical excellence and is rated among the top performing Classification Societies, both by the Paris MOU and the Tokyo MOU. RINA has been in the USCG list of zero-point class rating since 2001 confirming its excellent performance in the cruise sector, due also to close co-operation with the U.S. Coast Guard, which started in the 90s. Following the Outline of Co-operation, many steps have been taken such as the development of interpretation of SOLAS and the support given on board to USCG surveys with qualified RINA personnel. Marine services RINA Marine Services can be subdivided into core services, innovative services and niche sectors. Core Services: standard activities, such as ship classification and testing, which are normally provided by the operational network through its offices and engineering centres. Innovative services: value added services and marine research, carried out by engineers and surveyors with specific technical skills based in RINA Services or other subsidiaries of the Group. Niche sectors: yachting, passenger ships and naval ships. Due to their nature, these sectors are commercially managed through dedicated structures; the services are usually carried out through specialized hubs with dedicated and specific sets of rules.
Passenger Ship Centre of Excellence RINA has strengthened the Passenger ship sector by creating the Passenger Ship Centre of Excellence selecting and training the best engineers and naval architects for specific teams. RINA can thus rely on a specialized staff for passenger ships with experts in safety, hull & machinery, electrical systems and plants, risk assessment and environmental matters. The Passenger Ship Centre of Excellence represents a new organization concept aimed at offering not only core marine services, such as ship classification and statutory certification but also specific advisory services for the passenger ship industry, strengthening relationships with owners, shipyards and designers and improving a client s fleet and business performance. The Centre has a footprint in Italy, the USA and Asia so as to serve clients in both mature and emerging markets. RINA Test Laboratory - Fire tests The RINA Test Laboratory was established in 1965 as the Fire Research Laboratory. Today, the RINA Test Laboratory carries out all the fire resistance and reaction tests required for materials to be used in the marine sector according to the IMO FTP Code and directive 96/98/EC (MED)-Marine Equipment through certification of materials and manufacturing processes. Following the international development of RINA activities and thanks to long-standing testing experience, based on an average of approximately 550 tests performed every year, the RINA Test Laboratory has gained a worldwide reputation as one of the most competent laboratories for the performance of fire tests for marine applications and it is one of the first laboratories to have introduced the use of finite element mathematical modeling to predict and simulate the behavior of complex structures, such as paneling, ceilings, doors, etc., when subjected to fire. RINA is authorized to offer fire testing and certification services, recognized worldwide, which can be effectively used by manufacturers of plants and equipment for ships and by yards throughout the world. The RINA Test Laboratory is recognized/approved by: International Maritime Organization (UNO Agency dealing with safety at sea) United States Coast Guard-USCG for all the tests foreseen by the IMO FTP Code European Directive (MED-wheelmark): as notified body pursuant to the European Directive on Marine Equipment.
Value Added Services The passenger ship industry and relevant business continue to grow despite the global economic crisis and strive to always improve performance and profits maintaining an excellent quality level. One way is to look at sustainability, safety, environment and energy-saving, the main key concepts to follow and apply to always satisfy stricter technical and regulatory demands as well as customers always higher expectations. RINA offers a lot of value added services, allowing its clients to achieve the set goals for the fleet, thanks to its technical expertise and its longstanding experience with top cruise industry operators. These services are aimed at increasing the value of the client s business through a wide portfolio of advisory activities, advanced engineering studies and troubleshooting services to improve the ship s safe operation, services to increase efficiency and investment profitability through fuel-saving solutions, certifying environmental sustainability, validating the novel features required through process technology qualification, providing useful software tools to improve the efficiency of the technical and commercial processes without forgetting the RINA offer of staff training courses on board and ashore. Highlights on Top Value Added Services Advanced engineering services such as noise & vibration pre-assessment, measurements and calculations: RINA expertise provides owners and shipyards with assistance at the design stage, at the time of building and on an advisory basis whenever noise/vibration measurements are required by the rules. Novel features: RINA is always able to offer a smart solution for all kinds of technical challenges thanks to its specialized expert teams. Troubleshooting services such as Incident Investigation reports and analysis of single vessels or fleet. Advisory services to improve the Port State Control performance and to increase the on-board maintenance condition of machinery and technical spaces. Risk Assessment: RINA assists its clients by providing services aimed at identifying, assessing, managing and financially controlling the risks of each activity. The final objective is to achieve residual risk, which the company decides to maintain and manage internally. Risk reduction is achieved by performing activities aimed at eliminating, wherever possible, minimizing and transferring the total risk identified during the initial analysis and quantification stage.
Specialized services in support of the ship s design, such as those related to the Alternative Design that RINA offers through teams of specialists and by means of tools such as RAM analysis, fire risk analysis, evacuation analysis etc. to help shipbuilders, designers and owners evaluate the feasibility of alternative projects and compare their costs and benefits. Another specialized service is technical support for verification of the ship s compliance with the Safe Return to Port regulation. Energy-saving and energy conservation services focus on the fuel-saving context where RINA offers, for example, support for the development and implementation of the SEEMP Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan so as to measure and monitor the energy efficiency of each voyage and allow the client to achieve the ship s energy objectives. RINA has launched an innovative set of fuel-saving services aimed at performing Energy Audits, providing considerations and suggestions on possible improvements related to the management of energy consumption after an on-board survey and the examination of the ship s drawings & records. In addition, RINA provides hardware and software solutions for automatic Fuel Consumption Data Recording and Analysis, Propulsion Efficiency and Trim Optimization. Environmental services such as Green Plus and Green Passport Plus, the two voluntary goal-based additional class notations committed to environmental friendly shipping and ship-recycling, covering all aspects of the ship s impact on the environment (including carbon emissions) and guaranteeing all possible scrap facilities. Through the RINA energy management package, further positive integration is possible. Software tools: RINA is well aware of the importance of software tools which are the key to good results. That s why in partnership with IB Solutions, RINA is now able to offer its clients a suite of programs covering the full range of fleet management needs, the so-called InfoSHIP, including maintenance activities, purchase cycle and cost control. Training courses provided by the RINA Academy and the RINA Training Centre focus on international regulations, technical matters related to both newbuildings and ships in service management and operation without overlooking the behavioral training courses aimed at handling the human factor on board and ashore, through stress management, error detecting, emergency and crisis management. Hotel services, particularly intended for ships carrying passengers, mainly consist in activities concerning health and hygiene on board and ashore (offices/warehouses) for the verification of the HSE standards, laboratory activities for microbiological and chemical analyses, all activities for qualification and control of the food chain.
