3 BV Rules for Yachts Classification Owners and yacht builders can benefit from first class classification by referring to Bureau Veritas Rules for the Classification and the Certification of Yachts - NR 500 at its latest revision. They support all parties in a yacht project at every step, from the very early stage of pre-design to delivery and in-service life. BV s rules, regularly revised and up-graded, are built on experience gained for over 100 years with a large fleet of major sailing and motor yachts. BV has a close relationship with major yacht designers, technical consultants, shipyards and flag administrations involved in yachting. The benefit of this experience is that Bureau Veritas technical staff can be certain in decisions over compliance while being able to maintain the ability to discuss technical details and innovations right through the project. Today yachts of every size, from small sailing vessels to major mega yachts, are at the cutting edge of material use and innovative technical solutions. 4 Approval of design and survey services BV works with an integrated web tool, called VeriSTAR Project Management, that allows all parties involved to manage online projects by following-up approval of design and survey at site processes. VeriSTAR Project Management improves and eases the communication within BV s staff and its clients. Using a secured web technology, it can be accessed through internet. 5 What is CLASSIFICATION? Classification is a conformity assessment that focuses on a ship s construction and its technical maintenance throughout its life. Classification includes: Elaboration of the Rules for classification Drawing and calculation review, in addition to surveys, inspections and trials to confirm that the ship complies with the Rules Assignment of class and issuing of classification certificates Periodical, occasional and class renewal surveys The classification Rules aim to protect the ship as a piece of property. They focus on the ship s vital areas, in particular the structural strength of its hull and the reliability of machinery and equipment. Classification therefore plays an essential role in the prevention of accidents at sea and the protection of the environment. Classification is summarised by assigned notations.
