1 CHINO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDE PHOTOGRAPHY 2 Course Number 5765 Department Visual and Performing Arts Length of Course One (1) year / Two (2) semesters Grade Level 9-12 Prerequisite Successful Completion of Photography 1 and/or teacher approval Credit 5 units per semester/10 total units - Visual/Performing Art or elective credit Repeatable May be repeated for an additional 20 units Board Approved June 2, 2005 Description of Course: This course provides a broad overview of the two-dimensional art of photography. Photography 2 is a continuation of Photograph 1 content with an emphasis on digital photography. Students will gain practical experience and learn the technical and historical information essential to master the art of photographic representation. Basic information and techniques will be stressed and skills will be applied in a variety of ways. This course will increase knowledge of the physical skills necessary in creating photographs as well as an intellectual understanding of critical judgements in the fine arts. This course is aligned to the California State Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts. Rationale for Course: The visual arts have been a part of human expression since the prehistoric times. The visual arts have been used in all cultures and civilizations to communicate ideas, customs, traditions, and beliefs. The value of instruction and exposure to the visual arts is immeasurable in the humanizing process. Standard 1: Artistic Perception: Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to the arts. 1.1 Objective: Students learn how to perceive the world in an artistic way by refining their sensory perceptions of works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They identify visual elements and principals of design using the language of the visual arts Performance Indicator: Students create artwork that shows an understanding of basic photo elements and rules of composition Performance Indicator: Students compare and contrast the works of photographers such as Ansel Adams, Albert Stielglitz, and Weston in terms of photo principles and expressive content. 2 1.1.3 Performance Indicator: Students use the internet to visit the Getty Art Ed Net web site to gain insight as to how their personal viewpoints may be interpreted as art, and achieve an awareness of what they like as individuals Performance Indicator: Students research and write a description of the history of photographic development and use in other countries Performance Indicator: Students create photographs emphasizing line, color, texture, shape, value, and space to express emotion or a central theme Performance Indicator: Students derive meaning from master photographic works through interpreting the artist s use of photographic principals and theme Performance Indicator: Students accurately discuss the use of advanced photo principals in works from famous photographers Performance Indicator: Students choose two works from their portfolio. They will write and discuss how they used the media and photographic elements to convey an idea or emotion Performance Indicator: Students create photographs that show their understanding of advanced photographic elements. Standard 2: Creative Expression: Creating, performing, and participating in the arts. 2.1 Objective: Students develop knowledge and artistic skills in a variety of visual arts media and technical processes Performance Indicator: Students will complete a series of photographs which communicate their self image or how they view themselves in their environment Performance Indicator: Students complete a series of photographs discussing the use of exposure, materials used, and composition Performance Indicator: Students will work in small groups creating photographs which communicate how they see and feel the world around them Performance Indicator: Students complete a series of photographs in black and white. 3 2.1.5 Performance Indicator: Students work in small groups to create a computerized enhanced photograph from their portfolio of negatives Performance Indicator: Students use advanced darkroom principles to enhance photographs Performance Indicator: Students design and display their work after each grading period Performance Indicator: Students create photographs in night photography, portraiture, and special effects that show advanced skills in photographic principles Performance Indicator: Students, working in pairs, create a photograph digital image using Photoshop and digital cameras. Standard 3: Historical and Cultural Context: Understanding historical contributions and cultural dimensions of the arts. 3.1 Objective: Students explore the role of the visual arts in human history and culture. They investigate universal themes and concepts in historical and contemporary periods and styles in cultures throughout the world Performance Indicator: Students research the political, social, historical, and cultural issues in the visual arts by viewing slides and videos of famous photographs Performance Indicator: Students choose a photograph and explain its political, historical, and cultural significance Performance Indicator: Students work in small groups examining photographs from various cultures. They will contrast the photograph with their own culture and society Performance Indicator: Students will compare and evaluate works from other cultures and times. They will be able to discuss why and how each work was completed. Standard 4: Aesthetic Valuing: Responding to, analyzing, and making judgements about artworks. 4.1 Objective: Students analyze, interpret, and derive meaning from works of visual art. They make critical judgements about and determine the quality of visual artworks and art experiences in accord with learned elements and principles of art. Page 3 of 5 Photography 2

4 4.1.1 Performance Indicator: Students select two popular photographs from National Geographic and discuss the importance of composition, themes, and why they like or dislike the photographs Performance Indicator: Students select three artworks from their portfolios and reflect/write about how the work shows growth and the ways in which the photographs are successful Performance Indicator: Students select a famous photograph using the internet and describe the strong elements the photographer uses to show emotion and theme Performance Indicator: Students compare and contrast two photographs from the internet that are digitally created Performance Indicator: In small groups, students will choose two famous photographs from Edward Weston to discuss and write about the differences in design elements Performance Indicator: Students will create an outdoor portrait that shows the same model in two different locations. They will choose the best portrait and defend its qualities. Standard 5: Connections, Relations, Applications: Connecting and applying what is learned in each art form to learning in other art forms, subject areas, and careers. 5.1 Objective: Students apply what is learned in visual arts to learning across disciplines. They develop competencies in problem solving, communication skills, and management of time and resources, all of which contribute to lifelong learning and career skills Performance Indicator: Students create photographs or download photographs from the internet which will enhance their reports in other school disciplines Performance Indicator: Students will write and discuss the compositional rules, themes, and design elements of three photographs from their portfolios Performance Indicator: Using the web, students will list careers in photography and graphic arts in California Performance Indicator: Students will display their works in local fairs and contests.
