CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION Fundamental still photography with emphasis on planning a photograph, choice of camera, choice of films and papers, use of natural and artificial light, function of lenses and shutters, and techniques for processing sensitized materials. Two hours lecture, three hours lab, two hours lab arranged per week. CSU;UC (CAN ART 18) CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION Fundamental still photography with emphasis on planning a photograph, choice of camera, choice of films and papers, use of natural and artificial light, function of lenses and shutters, and techniques for processing sensitized materials. CSU;UC (CAN ART 18) COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate the correct operation of equipment, use of appropriate techniques, the correct handling of materials and the processes involved

2 PHTO 101 Basic Photography Page 2 in exposing films and papers to produce a fine quality photographic print 2. demonstrate skills in planning and producing an artistic photographic composition as a means of creative self-expression by producing a personal portfolio 3. demonstrate knowledge of photographic theory in choosing new products and using them effectively 4. describe photography techniques used in other fields where photography has a major role in the communication of ideas 5. demonstrate that photography is an exacting art requiring cleanliness, accuracy, and patience for quality results 6. evaluate finished prints according to impact, quality, technical excellence and composition REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Photography, Davis The reading for this course is: PRIMARILY COLLEGE LEVEL Minimum student materials: film photographic papers spotting dyes "000" sable hair brush dry mounting tissue mount boards Optional: complex camera tripod exposure meter filters cable release REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS

3 PHTO 101 Basic Photography Page 3 Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time: Study Answer questions Practice skills Read required materials Solve problems Write essays, research papers, lab reports, or journals Observe activities related to course content Participate in activities related to course content DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSE: 2 hours of independent work done out of class per each hour of lecture or class work, or 3 hours lab, practicum, or the equivalent, per unit. 4 PHTO 101 Basic Photography Page 4 METHODS OF ASSESSMENT FOR DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSES: Students will be graded, at minimum, in at least one of the following categories. If "essay" is not checked, it must be explained why essays are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade in the course. ESSAY OR SUBSTANTIAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT Includes not only "blue book" examinations but any written assignment of sufficient length and complexity to require students to select and organize ideas as well as to explain them. COMPUTATIONAL OR NON-COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEM-SOLVING Critical thinking should be demonstrated by the solution of unfamiliar problems that admits various solutions or various strategies for achieving the solution. SKILL DEMONSTRATION Students learn to analyze, compare, and contrast their works, to evaluate them in terms of other photographs being made by peers, to diagnose and correct mistakes in the production of a photograph, to anticipate problems before they are faced with them, and to think critically about how to solve unfamiliar problems as they arise. A course grade may not be based solely on attendance.
