Guidelines: Activity should relate to at least one area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Must be a hands-on activity that can be done in a group Must be completed within 45 minutes or less Must be appropriate for middle or high schoolers Submit your activity via writing, picture and/or video REQUIRED: include a list of materials, instructions, and how the activity relates to a career in STEM The more creative the better! 2 2015 Fall Girls & STEM Contest G 2 O stands for: Generating Girls Opportunities. It is CWEALF's latest initiative designed to engage girls, parents, and teachers in girls' educational opportunities. G 2 O is designed to: provide programming to encourage girls' enrollment in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in high school and beyond. Therefore, the activity should reflect this goal of encouraging girls in science, technology, engineering and math! By participating in this contest, the applicant accepts and agrees to comply with these official rules. Eligibility: This contest is open to all girls, ages 11-18, in Connecticut and you must have your parent s signature on your submission form (next page). Entry: You must submit an entry form with your activity (you may include a picture, drawing, and/or video to explain your activity all entries must include a written description of your activity including a list of materials, instructions for the activity, and how the activity relates to a career in a STEM areasee sample activity write-up). You may submit up to three activities and must complete a separate entry with each activity. Entries must be submitted via to: aberardi@cwealf.org. By entering, you acknowledge, agree and understand that each entry activity is (a) wholly original; (b) does not incorporate or include ANY materials that would require the consent of a third party; and, (c) does not violate ANY copyright, trademark, publicity right, privacy right or any right of the third party. CWEALF has the right to edit, change, or modify the activity, video, picture, and/or drawing for any purpose which it deems necessary or desirable, without the need for any compensation or permission. Deadline: You must submit your design by Friday, October 30 th, 2015 at 5:00 pm. Prize: One winner will be selected to win a $50.00 Amazon gift card and four tickets to the CT Science Center. The winner will be invited to a spring 2016 expo to present their activity for middle or high school girls. The expo will be selected based on the date, time, and location that is the most convenient for the student. Selection of winner: All entries will be screened and those that comply with the rules and have met the guidelines and specifications will be judged by CWEALF staff and volunteers. 4 Activity Name: Construct-I-Can Sample Activity Write-Up About the Activity Construct-I-Can is an engineering design exercise in which teams build structures from food cans and boxes. The exercise provides students with a hands-on exercise in engineering technology, the teamwork typical of the field, and the creativity necessary for good design and effective problem solving. Supplies for Construct-I-Can Non-perishable food items, both canned goods of various sizes and boxed goods of various shapes and sizes. (Can be limited to certain types of food items.) Sketching or graphing paper for participants to draw designs. Pens/pencils Copies of participant instructions Prizes, possibly computer generated certificates. To make the activity as cost effective as possible, combine it with a food drive for a local food pantry and donate the food items after the event. Ask participants to assist with the drive. Approach grocery stories and civic organizations for donations. STEM Career Engineering Technology (ET) is a career field which focuses on the applications of engineering and modern technology. Today, you will experience what it might be like to be an engineering designer. Engineering designers help design buildings, machines, robots, bridges, cars, trains, musical instruments, parts, programs, controls, almost anything you can think of, down to the tiniest nuts and bolts. You will be working on a team since that is the way engineering designers work. Activity Instructions Your team s challenge is to utilize the food items you are assigned and to create something, some sort of a structure, from them. As a team: 1. Look at the food items you have and discuss possible structures. 2. Decide what type of structure to build and make a sketch of it using the sketch paper in your packet. 3. Organize your materials (food items) and build the structure. 4. If your team decides to modify your design while you are building it, revise your sketch before you modify or finish the structure. Build from your design. Ask for additional sketch paper if you need it. 5. Prepare to explain your structure s design - why you used certain food items as you did, etc. Everyone on your team will be expected to participate in that explanation during the judging of the structure. 6. When your structure is complete, notify an instructor

5 Rules: You may barter and/or exchange materials (food items) with other teams. You may NOT just take materials from another team. You may use a limited amount of some other materials in building your structure, including the flats or boxes your food items came in, and tape or paper made available to you. You do not need to use all of the food items you have been assigned in building your structure. Judging: Structures will be judged and prizes awarded to Best Design and Most Creative Design. The team s explanation of design choices will be considered in the judging. The food items you are using today will be donated to a food pantry.
