2 You are invited! The Indiana University Health Tipton Hospital Foundation is pleased to invite local sophomores, juniors and seniors to participate in Project Connect. This one semester program is an exciting opportunity for young people to connect with the community. The goals of this initiative are: Connect youth to structured volunteer opportunities Connect community organizations and businesses to a program that provides a vehicle for them to provide structured youth service opportunities Connect interested youth to a centralized program Connect youth with educational opportunities in the area of leadership and life skills that complement their formal education Connect youth and their community Connect participants with local opportunities for future employment, encouraging youth to choose Tipton as their adult home Connect youth with an opportunity to earn a Certificate of Leadership and Service, providing substance to scholarship and college applications What is Project Connect All About? Project Connect is an innovative opportunity for youth in Tipton and surrounding counties. As participants in this program, students will have the opportunity to volunteer in their community, learn about a variety of career options, improve their leadership and life skills, earn a Certificate in Leadership and Service, and learn what it means to be connected to their community! Students enrolled in Project Connect must be in their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school. The program will be offered as a part of the fall semester and again as a part of the spring semester with a volunteer option available in the summer. Participants will be required to complete the following to receive a Certificate of Leadership and Service: 1. Volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per week for the 16 week course. a. Participants will complete two week rotations in various departments within the hospital and organizations in the community. b. Volunteer hours will be recorded at the place of service by the coordinator at that location. c. Participants will be required to log at least 60 hours during the 16 week course. It will be the responsibility of the student to assure the required hours are completed. d. Summer participants will complete all volunteer hours during the summer break from school. They will then complete leadership and life skills sessions during the fall semester. 2. Attend the orientation session and graduation 3. Attend at least 5 of the 6 leadership and life skills sessions a. Leadership and life skills sessions will be held once every 3-4 weeks from 7 9 pm. b. Sessions will be as follows: i. The Colors Personality Profile 1. Students will learn about how different personality types work together, and the strengths and limitations of their own personality type. ii. Conflict Management 1. Students will learn about conflict and ways to manage situations. The art of providing and receiving constructive criticism will also be covered. iii. Phone Skills and Hands only CPR 1. Proper phone etiquette skills will be demonstrated, message taking etc. 2. Hands only CPR training. Offering classroom style life-saving techniques. iv. Money Management and Time Management 1. Skills to manage money will be discussed, and practical money management strategies will be learned. 2. Students will learn how to juggle busy schedules both now and in the future.
3 v. Manners and Etiquette 1. Students will learn about proper etiquette for interviews, handshakes, and other interactions. A formal dinner will be a part of this session to learn appropriate dinner etiquette. vi. Diversity and Inclusion 1. Students will participate in discussions on how to handle situations possibly faced with in a diverse population. c. If a student is unable or does not attend at least 5 of the 6 sessions, they will not earn their certificate. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a missed session during the following program, but must make up the missed class within 6 months of their program to earn their certificate. 4. Upon completion of the program, each participant will be offered an interview with a senior level leadership member to practice their new skills. 5. A graduation program will be held at the completion of the course, and family will be invited to attend and celebrate as the students receive their certificates.
