1 afsweb The AFS:METHOD Web Design Contest The AFS:METHOD Web Design Contest is open to Central Ohio high school students in grades 9 through 12. This web design competition was created to recognize and reward high school students who create web sites. AFS:METHOD represents MarkEting, TecHnOlogy and Design. A balance of these three key elements is AFS Web s formula for creating a successful website. IMPORTANT DATES Registration Opens on Monday, February 18, 2013 Winner Announced on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 PRIZES One (1) Grand Prize $500 Two (2) Honorable Mentions About AFS Web Established in 1997, AFS Web is a talented team of experienced software development, web consulting, and web design professionals in Columbus, Ohio. AFS specializes in web development, web applications, web design, and online marketing. They are creators of ZOOM CMS, a content management solution.

2 The AFS:METHOD Web Design Contest GOAL The goal of this competition is for participants to create an original, 3-5 page website, using HTML and CSS, based on a topic selected by AFS Web. See page 4 for the Theme & Contest Milestones. ELIGIBILITY Any individual student in good standing in grades 9 through 12 in any Central Ohio public, private or parochial school may enter. Student must be sponsored by a teacher or guidance counselor. NUMBER OF ENTRIES A student may submit multiple entries, but is only eligible to win one prize. Entries should not have been submitted for any other contest of this nature. RULES & REQUIREMENTS REQUIRED PAGES AND SECTIONS The website must contain the following sections and file names: Home Page (index.html) Menu/main navigation Contact Page (contact.html) - Page must display the following information: Student Name High School Name Credits Page (credits.html) List of Content Attributions (see below) CHEATING Templates may not be used. All code and ideas must be original to the student. CONTENT ATTRIBUTIONS/COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL All entries must adhere to copyright laws. Students may not use intellectual property (images, sound, images, code) created by another person without obtaining written permission by the creator. All graphics, text and multimedia components must be listed on the credits page (credits.html). Copyright status for each graphic and multimedia component used must be noted. Instances of valid copyright statuses are as follows: Student owns the rights to the content. Student has gained permission to use the file. Include the written permission documentation or a URL to the documentation proof. File is free to use. Include a URL reference to the source and a URL reference to show the file is free to use. CASCADING STYLE SHEETS Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) must be created from scratch or by using Dreamweaver, Notepad++, or Visual Studio. Using a cascading style sheet from any other source will be considered cheating. JAVASCRIPT JavaScript is not a requirement for the web design contest. However, any use of JavaScript must be coded by the student. Any use of JavaScript code from the internet of other sources will be considered cheating with the exception of Javascript libraries (i.e. jquery, MooTools, Prototype, etc.). BROWSER PLUG-INS Flash, Java, Silverlight and other technologies requiring plug-ins are not permitted. Follow Us on Facebook Page 2 -

3 PERMISSION TO PUBLISH By entering the AFS:METHOD competition, each student is giving AFS Web permission to publish his or her work on its website and in all forms of promotional material, which may include print, electronic or other. PARENT/GUARDIAN CONSENT Student, parent/guardian of student, and teacher must sign the official entry form for the AFS:METHOD competition. In doing so, student, parent/guardian, and teacher state the following: All design, coding and production of the website was done by the student. Any graphics, text or multimedia components not created by the student is used with explicit permission by the creator(s) and properly credited. Student s name and school may be used in publicity materials about the competition. They will adhere to the rules of the competition set forth by the competition organizers, as well as all federal, state and local laws. JUDGING Each site will be judged by no less than three (3) judges. The judges scores will be totaled to determine semifinalists. All semi-finalist sites will be reviewed a second time by the judges in order to select a Grand Prize winner and two honorable mentions. Sites will be evaluated for: DESIGN Visual appeal and style (colors, fonts, use of white space) Ease of use Consistent look and feel MARKETING AND CONTENT Appeal and relevance of content to target audience Correct spelling and grammar Quality of writing and use of images Good use of content chunking IMPORTANT DATES Registration Opens February 18 th TECHNOLOGY Well-formed HTML and CSS Functionality Site performance (download speed) Cross-browser compatibility Optimized graphics for best appearance and fast downloading Registration Closes March 18 th Forms must be ed on this date. Or, mailed entry forms must be postmarked by March 18 th. Initial Design Deadline April 8 th Initial designs must be ed to afsmethod@ afsweb.net. See page 4 for Contest Theme and Milestones. Final Coded Design May 3 rd Coded design files must be zipped and sent to afsmethod@afsweb.net. Winners Announced May 14 th The top 3 entries will be posted to the AFS Web Facebook page. The contest winner will be contacted via . RESERVED RIGHTS The decision of the judges is final. The judges reserve the right to modify the competition rules or submission procedures during the competition if deemed necessary. Winner will be notified via by 12:00PM on Tuesday, May 14 th, The winning design and honorable mentions will be displayed on the competition website and on the AFS Web Facebook page Page 3

4 CONTEST THEME & MILESTONES CREATE A RESTAURANT Think of your favorite type of food. Now, create a restaurant! In order to get the word out, you will need the following things: An original restaurant name An original logo Content for your website (i.e. information about your restaurant, a menu, photos, etc.) A website design RESTAURANT NAME AND LOGO Create an original name and a logo for your restaurant. It can be anything you want (as long as it s original)! Study the logos of some of your favorite restaurants. Are the logos font-based or graphic-based? Does the font style represent a specific time, region or country? Make your logo readable and be creative! CONTENT Now that you have a restaurant name and logo, you will need content for your website. MARKETING COPY Write brief paragraphs that tell your web visitor about your restaurant and your food. You want to entice your web visitor to come to your restaurant. PHOTOS & GRAPHICS A restaurant website would not be complete without pictures of food to tempt your visitors palate. Great images sell a business and website! DESIGN YOUR HOMEPAGE Create a homepage design based on your logo and the content for your site. Design the look and feel of your site in your favorite design program (i.e. Photoshop, Fireworks, or CorelDRAW). Key elements to include: Logo Main navigation Marketing Copy Photo/image Footer Contact info or a call to action SUBMIT YOUR INITIAL HOMEPAGE DESIGN BY APRIL 8 TH Your homepage design must be approved before coding your site. Be sure that all of the key elements are used in your design. TO SUBMIT Create a flattened image of your design. Use your full name as the filename (i.e. first_lastname.jpg). the.jpg to afsmethod@afsweb. net. INSIDE PAGE Create an inside page design for your website in your favorite design program before coding your site. This layout is usually a different layout than your homepage design. CODE YOUR SITE Once your homepage and inside page designs are done, code your website! REQUIRED PAGES Your website must be a minimum of three (3) pages and a maximum of five (5) pages. You must include the following pages and filenames in your site: 1. Homepage index.html 2. Credits credits.html 3. Contact Us contact.html See the Rules & Requirements regarding the information that needs to be listed on the Credits and Contact Us page. If you choose to add two additional pages, be sure the information helps promote your restaurant. FINAL CODED DESIGN TO SUBMIT SUBMIT THE FINAL CODED DESIGN BY 5:00PM ON FRIDAY, MAY 3 RD 1. Create a Compressed (ZIP) Folder preserving the folder and file structure of your website. 2. Rename the ZIP file to your full name: i.e. firstname_lastname.zip 3. your ZIP file to afsmethod@afsweb.net. QUESTIONS?
