1 PSY 6361 Teaching of Psychology Online Course Spring nd Eight Weeks Instructor: Kristi Cordell-McNulty Phone: Office: Academic Building 104D Office Hours: M & W: 11-1 pm; 3:30-4pm W: 6-8 pm (Skype) F: pm; 1-3 pm Course Description: This course is designed for students who have a strong interest in pursuing careers involving the teaching of psychology. Emphasis will be placed on the preparation and presentation of course content across multiple formats, empirically supported pedagogy, and evaluation of student achievement. Course Objectives: Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, and trends) Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories Learning to apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving, and decisions) Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, you should: Understand the importance of good teaching pedagogy Create a syllabus for an introductory psychology course in multiple formats Design activities for an introductory psychology course in multiple formats Have basic strategies for dealing with different types of students and student issues Gain skills for developing a basic lecture for an introductory psychology course Develop a teaching philosophy and curriculum vita Required Readings: McKeachie s Teaching Tips (14 th ed.) Svinicki and McKeachie (eds.) ISBN: Handbook of the Teaching of Psychology Buskist and Davis (eds). ISBN: Course Requirements: This online course requires that students have access to Blackboard. It is very important to check the announcements and discussion boards on a regular basis. All required readings are listed on the syllabus. Because this is an online course, students must be diligent in keeping track of assignments and not falling behind. In addition, students must have access to a video recording device and be able to upload the video. Most phones and cameras will work for video recording for this course. Video Lectures: Students must complete two video lectures for this course covering topics in introductory psychology. These lectures will include power points. More information will be provided on the lecture handout.

2 Syllabi: Students will create two syllabi for the course, one for a face-to-face class and another for an online class. More information will be provided on the syllabus handout. Online Course Template: Students will create an online course template on CourseSites. More information will be provided on the online course template handout. Teaching Philosophy & Curriculum Vita: Students will create a teaching philosophy and curriculum vita. More information will be provided on the teaching philosophy and vita handout. Discussion Boards: The discussion board is meant to simulate discussion of the weekly readings and assignments that would normally happen in a traditional classroom setting. The instructor will post one question on the discussion boards for most weeks. Students must respond to one question. Sometimes the questions will relate to activities or video clips. Please make sure you watch the video or complete the activity first. These responses must be posted by Wednesday 11:59 pm (CST). Each original response is worth 10 points. Five points will be taken off for late posts. Students also need to respond to two comments made by other students or the instructor (not on their own posts). Each response post is worth 5 points. These responses must be completed by Saturday 11:59 pm (CST). Students may post response posts earlier than Saturday if other students have already commented. Any posts after 11:59 pm on Saturday will not be accepted. Students may post as many times as they like, however, only the first original post and first two responses to other students posts will be graded. Students must also check the discussion board and respond to comments by the instructor and other students on their original posts. Failure to answer questions that others have made about your posts will result in a loss of points. Please see the discussion board rubric for more details. Grades: Video Lecture (2) Comments to other students Syllabus (2) Online Course Template Vita Teaching Philosophy Discussion Boards 50 points 25 points 25 points Total Points 500 points Grading Scale A = (90%-100%) B = (80%-89%) C = (70%-79%) D = (60%-69%) E = (below 60%) Grading Policies: To be fair to all students in this class, all assignments are due on time. Late work will not be accepted without prior approval from the instructor. Make-up assignments will only be given in case of emergency IF a student notifies me BEFORE the exam is given and provides appropriate supporting documentation for the absence. Otherwise, the student will receive a zero for the missed assignment. The instructor will determine if a student will be allowed to make-up any

3 assignment. Students will lose one letter grade each day the assignment is late, if they are allowed to make it up at all. Communication Policy: Students are encouraged to the instructor if they have any questions or concerns. Students may also call the office phone, but unless the instructor is on campus, she will not get the message until the next weekday. When ing the instructor, please include your class name and time in the subject line (for example, General Psych, 9am). If you have a specific question please write out that question. For example, don t write, I need help with question 1, instead write, I need help with question 1, give an example of critical thinking. s sent during the week (Monday-Friday at 5pm) will be answered within 24 hours. s sent after 5pm on Friday may not be answered until Monday. Please be respectful in your s. This includes addressing the professor properly (i.e., Dr.) and signing your full name. s that are not respectful will not be answered. Office Hours: Because this is an online course, is probably the best way. Please keep in mind you may me at any time. I will try to respond to s within 24 hours except on weekends. For example, if you do me after 5pm (CST) on Friday, I may not respond until Monday. I also will do appointments through skype, just send me an to set up a time.
