Course Description: This class concentrates on understanding and comparing French cultural, social, educational, institutional, political, and technological dynamics. The objective of this course is to develop in the student an understanding of contemporary history and politics of France at home and abroad. A wide variety of spoken and written materials will be used to train students to understand French in formal and informal situations. Class format: students will work independently, in pairs, and in small groups. They are encouraged to evaluate their own work and the work of others. Learning Outcomes: The objectives of this course are for students, To discuss and write about the constructedness of French culture. 1

2 To improve their ability to express themselves accurately and resourcefully, both orally and in writing. To read and write about contemporary debates in France critically and from multiple perspectives. To recognize the diversity within French culture and compare it to their own. To learn to find information and to react and respond to others To develop a vocabulary for reading newspapers, literature, periodicals, and nontechnical writing. Textbooks: Alliages Culturels: La Socièté Française en Transformation, by Heather Willis Allen and Sébastien Dubreil (Cengage Learning, 1st Edition, 2013). La Seine était rouge, Leïla Sebbar, Grading Criteria: Homework and Participation 10% 5 Quizzes 10% Written Midterm (Take Home Exam) 10% Oral Midterm (in my Office Hours) 10% Composition 1 10% Composition 2 10% Individual Presentation 10% Cultural Interview 10% News Clips Portfolio 20% Quizzes: All quizzes are take home exams about the material already studied in class. A quiz is one week after it is announced via . Only quizzes on French geography will be in class. Final Research Project: News Clips Portfolio: Focusing on a current political, social or economic issue in France, create a media diary where you collect news clips about this particular topic. Please use a variety of sources: left wing/right wing sources, native/non-native sources, magazines, newspapers, online journals, Facebook, Twitter, documentaries, blogs, political cartoons, films, etc. Write a 7-8 page essay: The grading criteria are: 1. Thesis and a general outline of your major arguments in the introduction (20%); organization and coherence (10%); knowledge of subject material (20%); writing workshop (20%); mechanics (10%), and grammar and vocabulary (20%). All research projects must be accompanied by a title and a list of cited works. Oral presentations will take place on December 9, i.e., on Finals Week. The News Clips Portfolio is after the presentation. Cultural Event Report Guidelines: 2

3 You have 2 Cultural Reports related to the French speaking world. They will count towards your attendance and participation grade. You only have five (5) days after the event to turn in your 1-page, double-spaced, typed, cultural event reports, no more. To have an A on your report, you must engage in the theoretical component of the class and make connections with previous class readings or discussions. A summary of the event is not enough. The cultural event reports must include, but are not limited to the following elements: Title of the event Date of the event Location of the event Duration of the event Duration of time you spent at the event Name of event organizer(s) Stated purpose of the event may be found on event flyer or advertisement or by speaking to event organizer(s). Your expectations before attending the event Your general impressions of the event An assessment of your level of engagement at the event An assessment of how the event represented concepts from the course. The above elements must be incorporated into complete, grammatically correct sentences. Do not submit a list of the above elements in place of a well-written report. Attendance Policy The University of Alabama at Birmingham recognizes that the academic success of individual students is related to their class attendance and participation. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures complies with the official UAB Attendance and Excused Absence Policy for Undergraduate Programs and therefore allows, with anticipated proper official documentation, absences to jury or military duty as well as absences to participation in specific university-sponsored activities. UAB Attendance and Excused Absence Policy for Undergraduate Programs: olicy This is a collaborative class. All students and I will be working together and learning together. Regular attendance is necessary to build a successful collaborative learning atmosphere. Repeated absences, tardiness, passivity, and silence will be reflected in your course grade. To that end, in addition to the UAB Attendance Policy, the Attendance Policy of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will be in effect and is as follows: 2-days a week classes: 2 % from the FINAL grade is deducted for EACH absence above 3. More than 7 absences will result in an AUTOMATIC F. Other class policies Exams must be taken on dates and at times indicated. There will be NO make-ups, except with a documented medical excuse and an official UAB excused absence. Please turn off your cell phone when in class and put it in your bag/purse. No use of cell phones is permitted in class. Laptop computers are only allowed for note taking. V. UAB EARLY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) 3
