2 About Making Space Our Vision To create opportunities for people to enjoy and take part in high quality craft; epanding understanding of what craft is, does and can be. What is Making Space? Making Space is about community engagement, skills development and maker development in and through craft. Making Space is a community-based craft organisation creating opportunities for people to discover and develop their design and making skills and to increase their personal well being, through their involvement in high quality craft. From its purpose-built studios in Leigh Park, a mile from Havant station, it organises courses, master classes and projects through which children, young people and adults learn from skilled and eperienced makers. The building belongs to and is maintained by Hampshire County Council and Making Space has a management services agreement to use it for the purposes of community craft and visual arts, teaching and provision of studio spaces. There are seven small studio spaces to let. Professional artists and makers who want to develop their practice and their business can apply to rent a studio for an initial two years. As well as having space to think and make, they have access to the knowledge and networks of staff, trustees and freelancers and opportunities to earn income from teaching, project work, sales and commissions. Making Space is active in its local community, often working with partners to deliver high quality, first-time and ongoing eperiences of design and making in community settings and suggesting, to those with and without eperience, new ways of thinking about craft. Making Space is nationally networked and an energetic advocate of craft, arguing the case for investment and good practice in education and training and in the cultural sector and for the importance of craft to the economy. An overview of what Making Space does Making Space runs its own programme of activities and hires its studio to organisations that don t have a suitable space of their own. There are two studios for hire and Hampshire Youth Offending Service is a regular user. Makers can also book a studio to run a course of their own. People of all abilities can take part in a range of opportunities, including ten-week courses at basic, intermediate and advanced levels in silver jewellery and a shorter course for adults, in fused glass. There are sessions for children with additional needs, an after-school programme eploring different approaches to making and a five-day summer school for 7-16 year olds. The pattern of activity varies from year to year, depending on need, demand and available funding. Making Space is an Arts Award Centre, an Arts Award Supporter and three members of staff are Arts Award advisors. This means that anyone up to the age of 25 who would like to work towards an Arts Award, up to Gold level, has the necessary advice and encouragement on their doorstep. Once a month, the seven professional makers who rent studios at Making Space meet with the Director to echange news. These meetings help to ensure that Making Space and its tenants make the most of being under the same roof and pick up on opportunities to help each other. Every other month, there is a Makers Networking Lunch. This is a free get-together for local designers, makers, artists (including the tenants) and others working in the cultural sector in Hampshire. There is no need to book and everyone brings a dish to share.

The successful applicant will be the first point of contact for all visitors and enquiries during the evenings. We are looking for an organised, efficient and creative individual who will fit well into our small team and who is happy to work independently. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate a fleible approach to working, as no two days are the same at Making Space. The role involves opening and closing the building, taking bookings, liaising with artists and our customers in a friendly and polite way. The role will involve taking bookings, handling money and keeping accurate records and gathering feedback. The post holder will also offer substantial support to the Marketing and Education Programmer with tasks, such as the monthly e-newsletter, social media, press releases, website maintenance, creation of publicity and keeping mailing lists up to date. The applicant will be required to work on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to cover classes and to meet for an hour during the day with the Marketing and Education Programmer to discuss work and tasks. We know from eperience that this meeting is an essential part of the job and has helped the previous post holder feel very much a part of the team. In addition, some occasional weekend work may be required and this will be paid at the same rate. Arts eperienced and eperience of working in a venue will be an advantage. Making Space JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Marketing Assistant (Casual Duty Manager) Hours of Work: 7 hours a week for 30 weeks a year during term time, including 1- hour day time hand over meeting and 2 evening shifts. Remuneration: 1890 per year ( 9 an hour) Location: Making Space, 2 Bishopstoke Road, Leigh Park, Havant PO9 5BN Role Summary: To support the team and provide effective duty management of Making Space, take bookings, welcome visitors and provide marketing assistance to the Marketing and Education Programmer in keeping with the Business Plan and core objects of the charity. Reports to Marketing and Education Programmer Responsibilities 1. To be a key holder for the venue, both opening and closing and setting and disarming the alarm. 2. To be responsible for the safe evacuation of the venue in case of an emergency and liaising with the emergency services. 3. To be the first point of contact for visitors and onsite artists and during classes/events, taking enquiries, keeping registers, signing people in and ensuring spaces and facilities are in the best possible condition for visitors and artists. 4. To take bookings for classes and the creative programme including any related customer care work in liaison with the Administrator and Operations Coordinator.

To assist the team by proofing press releases, articles and features and other marketing material and assist with the monthly newsletter (Mail chimp format), and ensuring publicity displays are up to date, clean and tidy. 6. To epand Making Space audience reach using social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram. 7. To help epand the places Making Space can advertise its programmes by helping to keep the mailing list up to date, through mail outs and online. 8. To assist in keeping website content up to date during term times, such as writing and scheduling blog posts, taking photographs at workshops, uploading special events and adding/ removing details as and where requested by the Marketing and Education Programmer or Director. 9. To comply with health and safety policies, for eample to be a first- aider. 10. To comply with equal opportunities and child protection policies. 11. To undertake other duties reasonably required within the scope of the post. Scope of the Job This post is key to helping with the smooth day- to- day running of Making Space during term time. Due to the nature of the job, the post holder will be required to act as Duty Manager for evening classes during term time which means unlocking and locking the building and being responsible for the health and safety of people who visit and work on site whilst on duty and ensuring the spaces and facilities are set up for use.
