Care should be taken not to expose your Vdeo to any unnecessary vbraton, mosture, dust or heat. Durng electrcal storms t s advsable to unplug both the aeral cable and mans plug to prevent accdental damage to your Vdeo and TV. Do not operate your Vdeo f t s damaged. If your Vdeo stll does not operate properly, unplug t and call your dealer. Your Vdeo should not be repared by anyone except qualfed servce personnel. Never remove the top cover of your Vdeo as ths can expose you to very hgh voltage and other hazards. Ensure that your Vdeo s placed n a poston to allow a free flow of ar. The apparatus shall not be exposed to drppng or splashng and that no objects flled wth lquds, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus. 1 Unplug the Vdeo from the mans supply. 2 Clean the cabnet wth a soft damp cloth, do not apply lqud cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Never spray cleanng lquds on or near the Vdeo. Vdeo head cleanng Whenever a vdeo cassette s nserted nto or ejected from your Vdeo the vdeo head s automatcally cleaned. Ths should mean that addtonal head cleanng should not be necessary. However drt accumulatng on the head after a long perod of tme can cause the playback pcture to become blurred or broken up. Hgh qualty vdeo cassette tapes wll not normally depost drt onto the vdeo head, but old or damaged tapes mght.

A summary of the functons of the man buttons are shown below (rght), other buttons are descrbed elsewhere n ths gude. Basc functons of your Vdeo can also be operated usng the control panel on the front of your Vdeo. 3 To turn the Vdeo on. After turnng on, the Vdeo can be operated by the Remote Control To stop or eject the tape Tape Compartment To record the programme you are watchng To rewnd a tape To play a tape To fast forward a tape To swtch the chld lock on and off TV control buttons (Controllng your TV wth the suppled remote control -See page 15) To select the recordng speed of the tape To select the nput source for recordng Audo IN Vdeo IN Select the channel you want to watch. GC480W Dsplay Panel Remote Control Sensor GC260W To Pause a tape or vew t frame by frame Vdeo IN and Audo IN sockets are for connectng devces such as Vdeo Cameras, Games Consoles and other Vdeo. You wll need to connect to them usng an Audo Vdeo cable. To record programme beng watched To pause and vew frame by frame To dsplay the on screen menu To reset the tape counter to zero To fast forward pcture search by 30 secs. See page 12 Don t forget to nstall AAA type batteres n the Remote Control. * Use the 3/4/1/2 buttons to move through the menus, after accessng them va the MENU button. Make sure that all the applances are unplugged from the mans power, before makng any connectons to avod causng damage to your equpment. Usng a AV cable to connect your applances wll gve you the best sound and pcture qualty. 4 Roof aeral (not suppled) Vdeo AUDIO / VIDEO OUT Note : GC480W/GC260W have no AUDIO OUT (R) sockets. RF cable Audo cable Vdeo cable Aeral n RF out Televson (not suppled) AUDIO/VIDEO IN You should use ether a RF connecton or a AV connecton between your Vdeo and Televson. Connecton gude Roof aeral Your outsde aeral should be connected to the AERIAL socket of your Vdeo. RF cable If you are usng the RF cable a connecton needs to be made from the RF.OUT socket on your Vdeo to the aeral socket on your televson. AV socket If you have a AV socket connecton on your televson you can connect the televson s AUDIO IN/VIDEO IN sockets to the AUDIO OUT/VIDEO OUT sockets on the back of the Vdeo. Tune a vdeo channel If you are usng a AV connecton then the vdeo pcture wll be shown on the AV channel of your televson. If you are usng a RF cable you need to select a Vdeo channel on your televson and tune t to the Vdeo sgnal, a test pcture. Turn on the Vdeo and TV. Select the vacant poston 68 on your TV. Press POWER on the Remote Control to put the Vdeo on standby then press and hold PROG. 3 or 4 on the front of your Vdeo for more than 4 seconds. If the test pcture appear clearly on the televson screen, the poston 68 s your vdeo channel. If the test pcture do not appear clearly, go to next. Select a vacant poston between 28 and 68 on your televson. Press PROG. 3 or 4 on the Vdeo untl the test pcture appear clearly on the televson screen. You can also set the output frequency to OFF f there s any nterference when your TV s connected to the Vdeo wth a AV cable. Press POWER on the front of your vdeo when you have fnshed.

Ths system automatcally tunes and stores TV channels. If you want to return to ACMS after your ntal set up, access t va the menu. 5 Usng ACMS 1 Press the POWER to turn on your Vdeo. 2 Select the vdeo channel you have tuned on your televson, refer to your TV user gude f necessary. The ACMS menu screen wll appear. Pr-12 ACMS D ACMS OK 3 Press OK to start the automatc tunng process. 4 When the ACMS has fnshed a screen showng all the channels that have been found and the postons they have been placed n wll be dsplayed. 5 Check that the channels correspond to the postons n whch you want them. If they are not n the order that you would lke they can be moved or deleted. See Changng the order of the televson statons and Deletng the televson statons. 6 Press to store the settngs. Changng the order of the televson statons You wll fnd t useful to have a current televson programme gude to hand durng ths operaton. 1 Press to access the man menu. Use 1 or 2 to select PR SET then press OK. 2 Press agan. 3 Use ether the 3 or 4 buttons to select the programme number that you wsh to move. Then press 2. 4 Press 3 or 4 untl you reach the poston you wsh to store the channel n. 5 Press OK. The programme wll move to the new poston. 6 Press to leave the menu. To move other programs repeat the above process. Deletng the televson statons 1 Press to access the man menu. 2 Use 1 or 2 to select PR SET then press OK. 3 Press then use 3 or 4 to select the programme number you wsh to delete. 4 Press 1, after a short whle the selected staton wll be deleted. The remanng statons are resorted automatcally. 5 Press to remove the menu. If you wsh to delete further statons repeat the above process. Selectng ACMS 1 Turn on your televson and your Vdeo and select the vdeo channel on your televson. 2 Press to access the man menu. Press 1 or 2 to select ACMS, and then OK. 3 Follow the nstructons n Usng ACMS, at the begnnng of ths page.

Manual tunng can be more effectve f the televson sgnal n your area s too weak for the ACMS to work properly. You can also fne tune your channels and customse the channel names. 6 Manual tunng 1 Turn on your televson and your Vdeo. Select the vdeo channel on your televson and press to access the man menu. 2 Press ether 1 or 2 to select PR SET then press OK. 3 Press agan and the televson staton table wll then appear. 4 Use the 3 or 4 buttons to select the programme number you want to tune then press OK. 5 Select the CH secton (f not already selected) by usng the 1 or 2 buttons and then press AV to select C (Standard statons) or S (Cable statons). 6 Use the 3 or 4 buttons to move through the channel numbers to fnd the requred staton. 7 The staton can be fne tuned to mprove pcture qualty. Select MFT (Manual Fne Tunng) usng the 1 or 2 buttons. Use the 3 or 4 buttons to adjust the pcture. 8 Select STATION by pressng 2 you can then name your staton. 9 Press OK to reveal the televson staton name lst. Use the 3 or 4 buttons to select a staton name from the lst. Press OK to select t. PR CH MFT 06 C40 00 P SET R SBS ABC SEVEN NINE TEN NBN GWN WIN OK If the name you requre s not on the lst see Customsng staton names opposte (Start from step No. 5). 10 To confrm the staton placement press. 11 Press agan to remove the menu. 12 The new staton has now been stored nto your Vdeo. If you wsh to manually tune other channels you should repeat the above procedure. To move the manually tuned channel to t s correct poston see Changng the order of the televson statons on page 5. If t s necessary for you to tune all the televson statons manually you may fnd t easer f you wrte the CH numbers down for each staton as you fnd them. You can then select each channel from the man menu and type the CH numbers n drectly. Each channel wll then be n the correct poston so there s no need to change them later. Customsng staton names If the staton name you requre sn t lsted you can nsert one manually nstead of usng the templates. 1 Press to access the man menu. Use 1 or 2 to select PR SET then press OK. 2 Press agan then use 3 or 4 to select the programme number you wsh to customse staton name. 3 Press OK. 4 Press 2 to go to STATION and then press OK. 5 Then press 2, a flashng bar appears beneath the frst letter. 6 Use 3 or 4 to select letters and numbers for the new staton name up to a maxmum of 5. 7 Press 1 or 2 to move between the characters. 8 Press OK. 9 To confrm the new poston press. 10 press agan to ext the menu. 11 The new staton name s now stored n your Vdeo.

7 GC990W1_GC480W1_NA2ALL_07V 3/10/04 1:56 PM Page 7 Operatng your Vdeo The man functons of your Vdeo can be operated usng ether the Remote Control or front control panel on the Vdeo. Before startng, you should ensure that your televson and your Vdeo have been plugged n and swtched on and that the vdeo channel on your televson s selected. 7 Playng a vdeo tape Press PLAY B. The televson screen wll dsplay PLAY. Auto trackng Your Vdeo wll automatcally adjust the trackng to gve you the best pcture qualty. If the qualty of the recordng s poor, repeatedly press TRK + or - on the remote control to manually adjust the trackng untl any dstortons have been removed. Stoppng play Smply press STOP 9 to halt vdeo play. The Vdeo wll revert to televson mode. Pcture Search Whle a vdeo cassette s playng you can search the tape forward and backward to look for a specfc poston on the tape. Press REW 5 or FF 6 to make the tape play rapdly forwards or backwards. The pcture wll be shown at seven tmes normal play speed. Fast Forward/Rewnd To fast forward or rewnd at maxmum speed, the tape must not be n play mode. Press STOP 9 then press ether 5 REW for rewnd or FF 6 for fast forward. Whlst you are rewndng or fast forwardng you can vew the secton you are passng. Press and hold (for a few seconds) ether REW 5 or FF 6. Releasng the REW 5 or FF 6 wll return the Vdeo to normal rewnd or fast forward operaton. Slow Moton Playback, Shuttle (GC990W/GC480W Only) Usng the 1 or 2 buttons t s possble to adjust playback speed durng playng back or stll pcture. Below s a lst of what speeds are accessble and how to reach them. 1 once = slow play 1 twce = stll 1 three tmes = play backwards 1 four tmes = Reverse play 3x speed 1 fve tmes = Reverse play 7x speed 2 once = 2x forward play 2 twce = 7x forward play To swtch off the slow moton and shuttle, press the desred functon. Durng slow moton and shuttle, the nose bars may appear on the pcture accordng to the status of tape. If dstortons can be seen n the pcture, reduce them wth TRK + or -. Pausng a tape Pressng P/STILL ; wll pause play, gvng you a stll pcture on the screen. Ths pcture may dsplay some nterference n the form of black and whte horzontal lnes. Ths s perfectly normal and does not mean that the vdeo tape or Vdeo are damaged. The tape can be paused for up to fve mnutes. The Vdeo wll then automatcally stop playng a tape n order to avod damagng the tape or your Vdeo. Frame Advance (GC990W/GC480W Only) 1 Pressng P/STILL ; repeatedly wll advance the pcture frame by frame. 2 You can use the TRK + or - buttons to reduce any vertcal movement seen on the stll pcture. 3 Press PLAY B to contnue play from pause. Removng the Vdeo tape Press EJECT / to remove the vdeo cassette from your Vdeo. If the end of the tape s reached, your Vdeo wll automatcally stop, rewnd, eject the tape and place tself nto Standby mode.

8 GC990W1_GC480W1_NA2ALL_07V 3/10/04 1:56 PM Page 8 Recordng from televson programs There are two methods of recordng, Instant Tmer Recordng (ITR) and Tmer Recordng. For all recordng methods you should ensure the televson channels are tuned and stored correctly and that the clock s set to the correct tme. 8 Recordng from RCA If you wsh to record drectly from the AV socket at the front of your Vdeo, connect the devce you wsh to record from usng a AV cable and press AV to dsplay the pcture from the devce. Long Play/Standard Play Your Vdeo has a Long Play (LP) feature. Ths means you can record twce the amount of nformaton on each recordable vdeo tape. For example on a three hour (E180) tape you would be able to record sx hours worth of programmes. Wth Long Play pcture and sound playback qualty are slghtly reduced from that of standard play. Press the LP button f you wsh to change to Long Play (LP), press t agan to select Standard Play (SP). SP or LP wll be dsplayed on your televson screen to let you know whch has been selected. EP provdes three tmes as much recordng tme as SP. Instant Tmer Recordng ITR begns recordng mmedately, ether for a set perod of tme or untl the tape runs out. 1 Turn on your Vdeo and televson. Insert a vdeo tape nto the Vdeo. Select the Vdeo channel on your televson. 2 Use the PR + or - buttons to select whch programme you wsh to record. The currently selected programme wll be dsplayed on screen. You can also select the programme number usng the Remote Control number buttons. 3 Press 0 REC/ITR to begn recordng. On the frst press REC SP (or LP) wll appear on the televson screen. REC SP The Vdeo wll start recordng. It wll contnue recordng untl the end of the tape s reached or t s manually stopped. To set the length of tme whch you want to record for, press the 0 REC/ITR button twce. The televson screen wll show 0H30. Each subsequent press of the 0 REC/ITR button wll ncrease the recordng tme by thrty mnutes to a maxmum of nne hours. REC SP 0H30 You can also nterrupt recordng to avod unwanted scenes. If you press P/STILL ; durng ITR the Vdeo wll enter the record pause mode and the set perod of tme s cancelled. 1 To pause recordng press P/STILL ;. 2 Press P/STILL ; agan to contnue recordng. Tapes can be paused for up to fve mnutes. REC PAUSE wll be dsplayed on the televson screen whle a tape s paused. After fve mnutes your Vdeo wll automatcally cancel recordng to prevent damage to the vdeo tape or your Vdeo. To vew one channel whlst recordng another, press TV/VCR to dsappear VCR on the dsplay panel. Usng your TV remote, swtch to the channel you want to watch. Fnshng a recordng 1 Press STOP 9. 2 Press EJECT /. EJECT wll appear on the televson screen. If the end of the tape s reached your Vdeo wll automatcally stop recordng, rewnd, stop and eject the tape and place tself nto Standby.

Ths can be done up to one month n advance wth up to seven recordngs beng pre-programmed. Ensure the televson channels have been tuned and stored correctly and that the clock s set to the correct tme. 9 Tmer Recordng Insert a vdeo tape. 1 Press for the man menu. 2 Use 1 or 2 to select REC. 3 Press OK. Press OK agan to enter the tmer record menu. PR DATE T I M E :- - ~ - -:- - SP :- - ~ - -:- - SP 4 To enter the programme number that you wsh to record you can scroll through the avalable optons usng the 3 or 4 buttons or you can enter the numbers drectly. When selectng sngle dgt numbers remember to put 0 frst. If you wsh to record from the VIDEO IN/AUDIO IN sockets press AV. 5 Press 2 and enter the date of the programme that you wsh to record. Press OK before enterng a date to select one of the automated features. They are DLY (daly) to record every day except Saturday and Sunday at the set tme, or ndvdual days e.g. MO (Monday) to record at the same tme every week. Press 1 or 2 to select, then press OK to confrm. 6 Enter the tme of the start and end of the programme that you wsh to record. The Vdeo uses a 24 hour clock. PR DATE T I M E PR : 00~ 11: 00 SP :- - ~ - -:- - SP 7 Press 2 to select the recordng speed. Use the 3 or 4 to move among Standard Play, Intellgent Play and Long Play. IP (Intellgent Play) determnes how much tape s left and swtches speed from SP to LP, f necessary, to complete recordng the programme. 8 Check that the tmer event detals are correct, f they are, press to save your settngs. If PLEASE CHECK s dsplayed you have entered ncorrect nformaton. Check the detals on the televson screen and reenter t. If you want to enter more Tmer recordngs, repeat the above process from pont 3. Press agan to remove the menu. 9 Place the Vdeo on standby by pressng the POWER on the remote control. TIMER wll appear n the Vdeo dsplay to show that t s set to record. The Vdeo s now set to record at the tme you have specfed. 10 Press POWER to end recordng. Changng tmer events If you wsh at any tme to change a recordng event press 3 or 4 to select the tmer slot that you wsh to change. Press 1 to delete or OK to edt that entry. PR DATE T I M E PR : 00~ 11: 00 SP :- - ~ - -:- - SP Use the 1 or 2 buttons to select the secton you wsh to change and the 3 or 4 buttons to change those sectons. Protect your recordngs To stop a recordng you have made beng recorded over, break off the protecton tab on the rear of the vdeo tape. To record on a tape that has had ts protecton strp removed, cover the hole wth adhesve tape. Recordng tape to tape You wll need a second Vdeo for tape to tape copyng. Connect usng a AV cable from AUDIO IN/VIDEO IN sockets of your Vdeo. Select audo/vdeo mode on the recordng Vdeo by pressng the AV on the Remote Control. To montor the recordng, connect the recordng Vdeo to your TV usng the standard coaxal aeral cable. NOTE Your Vdeo may also record NTSC sgnal from AV nput jack on the front of Vdeo.

10 GC990W1_GC480W1_NA2ALL_07V 3/10/04 1:56 PM Page 10 Advanced functons on your Vdeo Your Vdeo has some advanced operatons wth features you may fnd useful. 10 CM (Commercal Message) Skp Ths enables you to skp past small sectons of the vdeo tape, such as commercal messages, televson adverts or flm tralers. Press the CM SKIP button on the remote control, durng play. Each subsequent press of the button ncreases the amount of the tape whch s skpped by 30 seconds, up to a total of three mnutes (180 seconds). After the chosen tme has passed normal play wll automatcally resume. OPR (Optmum Pcture Response) Ths enhances the pcture from the vdeo tape by adjustng to the condton of the vdeo tape. If you feel that the pcture needs adjustng you can manually change the OPR settng. You can only set OPR when a tape s playng n the Vdeo. 1 Press to enter the man menu. 2 Use 1 or 2 to select OPR then press OK. OFF SOFT SHARP 3 Use the 3 or 4 buttons to select OFF, SOFT or SHARP. 4 Press to ext the menus. Colour standards Your Vdeo uses dual colour standards, PAL B/G and SECAM B/G. Durng play your Vdeo should select the Colour System automatcally, however f you experence problems you may need to do t manually. 1 Press to enter the man menu. 2 Use 1 or 2 to select SYSTEM then press OK. 3 Use 3 or 4 to select the colour system used n your recordng. OPR PAL Sgnals (Playback or recordng mode) AUTO PAL MESECAM SYS- TEM NTSC Sgnals (Playback mode) NTSC PB NTSC 3.58 NTSC 4.43 SYS- TEM NTSC PB: Use when playng back a tape recorded n the NTSC system on PAL TV. NTSC 3.58: Use when playng back a tape recorded n the NTSC system n 3.58 mode. NTSC 4.43: Use when playng back a tape recorded n the NTSC system n 4.43 mode. NTSC Sgnals (Recordng mode) NTSC 3.58 NTSC 4.43 SYS- TEM NTSC 3.58: Use when recordng NTSC 3.58 sgnals. NTSC 4.43: Use when recordng NTSC 4.43 sgnals. 4 Press to ext the menus.

11 GC990W1_GC480W1_NA2ALL_07V 3/10/04 1:56 PM Page 11 Advanced functons on your Vdeo Your Vdeo has some advanced operatons wth features you may fnd useful. 11 Settng the clock The Vdeo uses a 24 hour clock, so that for example 1 pm s represented as 13:00. Sngle dgt numbers should be entered wth a 0 n front for nstance, Press to enter the man menu. Use the 1 or 2 buttons to select TIME DATE then press OK. 2 Use the numbered buttons or the 3 or 4 on the remote control to enter the the HOURS, MINUTES, DAY, MONTH and YEAR. 1 2 TIME DATE HH MM DD MM YY - - : The day of the week wll appear automatcally once the date has been entered. If you make a mstake use 1 or 2 to select the tem and re-enter the detals. 3 Once you are satsfed press to store your settngs. On screen dsplay (OSD) Ths can be used to dsplay the current tme, tape counter, tape remanng, day, month and year, day of week, channel and operatonal mode of your Vdeo on your televson screen. If a recordng s takng place, the on screen dsplays wll not be recorded onto tape. 1 Press OK to show the OSD. STOP SP AUTO PR THU 12:00 2 Press OK repeatedly to cycle through the dsplay optons. The tape counter and amount of tape left wll appear f there s a tape loaded. 3 Press OK agan to remove all OSD s from the televson screen. To turn off the on screen dsplays completely. 1 Press to enter the man menu. 2 Select fosd ON OFF usng 1 or 2 then press OK. 3 Select OFF usng 3 or 4. Press to save the settng. Resettng the dgtal tape counter The tape counter dsplays the play or recordng tme elapsed n hours mnutes and seconds. Press CLEAR to reset the counter to 0:00:00. When you press STOP 9 and press REW 5, the Vdeo wll stop at 0:00:00, the pont where you reset the counter. Lock (Chld Lock) You can turn off the buttons on the Control Panel so that your Vdeo can only be operated usng the Remote Control. 1 Press the LOCK on the Remote Control. SAFE wll appear on the televson screen for a few seconds. None of the buttons on the Control Panel wll work apart from EJECT /. SAFE If any other buttons on the front of the Vdeo are pressed, SAFE wll appear on the televson screen for a few seconds. To unlock the Chld Lock press the LOCK agan on the Remote Control. Automatc power off By pressng the POWER whle rewndng a tape the Vdeo wll turn off automatcally when the tape rewnd has completed.

You can select the way sound s played back. 1 Press to access the man menu. 2 Select AUDIO wth the 1 or 2 buttons. 3 Press OK. 4 Use the 3 or 4 buttons to choose between: STEREO LEFT (left channel only) RIGHT (rght channel only) MONO 5 Press to ext the menu. ez Power Off Press ez POWER OFF durng play. The Vdeo wll automatcally stop the tape, rewnd to the begnnng and eject the tape. It wll then turn tself to standby. ez Repeat You can select a secton of the vdeo tape to repeat twce and then resume play. 1 Press and hold the ez REPEAT for more than 4 seconds. The Vdeo wll automatcally rewnd for as long as the ez REPEAT s held. 2 Release the button when you want the replay to begn. 3 The Vdeo wll then play the selected secton twce. EZ REPEAT 4 To resume normal play from any poston, press PLAY B durng the frst repeat.

14 GC990W1_GC480W1_NA2ALL_07V 3/10/04 1:56 PM Page 14 Troubleshootng If you are havng trouble wth your Vdeo please check the followng before callng your servce centre. 14 No pcture and no sound Check that the Vdeo plug has been plugged n and swtched on at a mans wall socket and that the televson has been plugged n and swtched on. Check the aeral lead s undamaged and securely connected to the correct sockets n both the televson and the Vdeo. Check that you have tuned nto a vdeo channel on your televson. If you are usng a AV connecton, check that the cable s secure and that the correct AV channel s selected on your televson. No playback or a poor pcture Try a dfferent vdeo cassette. If the problem s resolved, the problem may have been the cassette tself. Try usng the trackng buttons TRK + or - to reduce the amount of vsble nterference. If the cassette contans a recordng that you have recently made from the televson, the televson channels may not be tuned to the Vdeo correctly. TV programmes cannot be recorded Check the recepton on your televson set. If you cannot receve a pcture through your aeral, the Vdeo wll be unable to record televson broadcasts. Check the aeral lead s undamaged and securely connected to the correct sockets. Check that the Vdeo has been tuned to the televson programmes properly. Check the rear of the vdeo cassette to see f the safety tab used to prevent recordng has been removed. Check that the sgnal beng receved by the televson s reasonable qualty. A vdeo tape cannot be nserted Check that there s not a cassette n the Vdeo already. Is the vdeo cassette the rght way round? The wndows should be at the top and the arrow should be pontng toward the Vdeo. The Remote Control does not work Has the Vdeo been plugged n and swtched on? Check that the batteres have been nserted correctly nto the Remote Control. The top of the vdeo pcture s unstable The vdeo cassette may be damaged. Insert another vdeo cassette and check the pcture from t. Try adjustng the horzontal control on your televson, you should consult your televson user gude on how to do ths. Check the aeral lead s undamaged and securely connected to the correct sockets. Ensure that the televson has been correctly tuned to your Vdeo. NICAM sound s not beng recorded (GC990W Only) Check that AUTO has been selected n the NICAM menu. Consult a TV gude to check that the broadcast was n stereo. Check your televson user gude to see f you have a NICAM stereo feature on your televson. No H - F sound (GC990W Only) In the Audo menu check that the STEREO opton has been selected. Check your televson user gude to see f you have a stereo feature on your televson. Autoplay does not work If the safety tab has not been removed from the vdeo cassette ths functon wll not work. Ths functon wll not work durng the Lock operaton (See page 11).
