1 SCHOOL OF HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE Psychology with Counselling BSc Hons Programme accredited by Avery Hill Campus
2 Why study this programme? This programme focuses on the core areas of psychology, while also providing students with the fundamentals of counselling practice and theory. It is ideal if you are interested in becoming a clinician or therapist or in working in mental health after your degree. Psychology seeks to understand mind and behaviour through experimentation, observation and measurement. This includes the study of perception, attention, memory and emotion in adults and children; the socio-psychological processes that shape our relationships with each other and society; the development of language, behaviour, personality and thought in children; the biological processes that underpin behaviour; and the causes and treatment of abnormal behaviour. Counselling seeks to provide help to individuals who are distressed or experiencing emotional difficulties at work or in relationships, and the degree covers the theories that underpin the practice and skills required to be a counsellor, such as empathic listening and communication skills. You will receive a strong grounding in psychological research methods. This component focuses on learning about how psychological research is conducted, analysed and reported through a series of guided-learning exercises, culminating in an independent research project in the final year. You will gain a scientific understanding of mind, brain, behaviour and experience, and of the complex interactions between the principles of psychology and the theory and practice of counselling. You will also develop an understanding of counselling practice, theory and ethics. The programme is run by the School of Health & Social Care s Department of Psychology, Social Work & Counselling. The department has considerable experience in providing well-respected psychology and counselling training, and its staff are active in research and are experts in their fields. The degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society and confers eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. This is required if you are interested in becoming a chartered psychologist. Why study with us? The School of Health & Social Care, part of the Faculty of Education & Health, has more than 20 years experience as a trusted provider of health and social care and psychology training and education.
