1 Thank you for your interest in Cryptic and this new fixed-term position of Digital User Researcher. This is a nine-month full-time contract aimed at technology driven creative thinkers who are looking to develop their professional skills through hands on involvement and mentoring opportunities. It is hoped that at the end of this placement they will have gained invaluable experience and training within the creative industries sector that will allow for future career progression. The Digital User Researcher is part of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme, run by Jerwood Charitable Foundation with the support of Garfield Weston Foundation, Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and J Paul Getty Jnr Charitable Trust. The scheme is intended to create opportunities for talented graduates to start their careers in the arts. Positions are aimed specifically at recent arts graduates whose circumstances mean they would not otherwise be in a position to develop their skills and CV through unpaid work experience. In accordance with the eligibility criteria for this scheme, we can only accept applications from candidates who: Have graduated since summer 2013, from a first degree (i.e. a BA or an NVQ 6, or MA if from a Scottish university) in the UK; Received a full maintenance grant during the full period of their academic course and are able to verify this with the necessary paperwork; Achieved a 2:2 degree or above; Are full-time resident in the UK. For more information, please visit: JOB DESCRIPTION Responsible to: Responsible for: Outline: Head of Planning, Caroline Thompson N/A The Digital User Researcher will work closely with our Marketing Manager, Christopher Glasgow and will be responsible for dedicated R&D into how best to engage and interact with our current and future audiences through new online platforms and technologies. The successful candidate will be required to extensively research and monitor existing and emerging digital trends whilst also assessing the company s ongoing methods of data-collection, research and evaluation. In the first instance, the findings generated from the former will be used to inform how we improve and develop the latter, particularly in relation to prioritising the essential information we collect from audiences and how we work on analysing, visualizing and applying the results more effectively. Subsequently, the Digital User Researcher will combine their findings in order to reveal a potential gap in the market in which to inform the design and development of a new digital tool, Cryptic s next memorable first in engaging and inspiring our audiences through imagination, innovation and new talent. Through this project the recipient will enhance and / or acquire new skills in critical thinking, information literacy and levels of enquiry. Most importantly, they should always have a willingness to learn and be motivated by an appetite for discovery; staying up to date and, where possible, ahead of the game in light of the fast-paced, forward-thinking nature of the company.

3 Key Responsibilities: Marketing: Other: Planning and conducting in depth research of current digital offerings across the creative industries; Identifying potential barriers and enablers for technology; Identifying and interviewing influential industry leaders and stakeholders; Analysing audience activity and behaviours across Cryptic s websites and social media profiles; Carrying out audience surveys and improving methods of data-collection; Sourcing engaging content and multimedia in order to enhance Cryptic s website and social media profiles; Sourcing and trialling new programmes and software for secure data storage and management; Exploring and developing new formats for visualising and presenting this data; Reporting regularly to senior management on new and relevant research findings; Presenting recommendations on how best to further engage with current and attract future audiences through new technology. Assisting Marketing Manager to implement Cryptic s Communications Strategy. Networking at events; Attendance at opening nights; Contributing to the overall development of Cryptic; Assist in developing and implementing Cryptic s Equal Opportunities Policy and any other policies or plans that Cryptic may introduce in the future; Undertaking any other duties as agreed are appropriate to the post. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential: Appplicants must meet the eligibility criteria; A passion for digital technologies and finding innovative ways to utilise these as part of a strategic vision;excellent IT skills (inc. Word, Outlook, Access, Excel); Excellent online skills, particularly in web maintenance, development, moderation of and interaction with users (inc. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wordpress) Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; Sound numerical ability; Strong organisational skills;

4 Ability to multi-task, set priorities, manage own time and workload to meet deadlines in a fast-paced and high pressure environment; Attention to detail; Ability to problem solve; Quick and accurate learner; Ability to work in a team and be self-motivated; Confidence and good networking skills; Enthusiasm and passion for contemporary arts; A strong personality and sense of humour; Hard working and committed to the company; Commitment to equal opportunities and access to the arts for all. Desirable: Knowledge of current digital arts practice and industry developments; A working knowledge of the cultural landscape of Scotland, the UK and internationally; Clean Driving License. TERMS AND CONDITIONS Salary 15,500 pro rata Duration Fixed-term contract for nine months and offered on a three-month probation Start Date As soon as possible after conclusion of interviews Location Glasgow Holiday Cryptic s holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December. The basic annual holiday entitlement with pay is 20 days per year for full time staff in addition to authorised public holidays and this will be given pro rata. Hours Office hours are between 9.30am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, with an hour for lunch. Occasional evening and weekend work is required plus attendance at Cryptic performances. The team are also expected to attend cultural events out of work hours, which could include performances, concerts, dance, film or operas. Additional Information The Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme is conducting an evaluation. This involves applicants completing a brief and anonymous survey questionnaire, which will not be used in assessing

5 your application. Survey results will be held by Jerwood Charitable Foundation and will not be shared with the organisation you have applied to. All successful bursary recipients will be required to take part in an evaluation of the Programme as a condition of their placement. Although the placement is based in Glasgow, successful applicants may be required to travel elsewhere in the UK.
