1 General Guide THE LIBRARY Biblimetrics Biblimetrics is a term used t describe the statistical analysis f the impact f research; biblimetric methds can be used t measure the impact f an academic jurnal article, the impact f a grup f researchers, r the impact f a field f research. Mst typically, biblimetrics are used t analyse the number f citatins a jurnal article receives in subsequent articles, thus indicating the impact the riginal article had n future research in that field. The mst cmmn biblimetric methds are: Citatin analysis examines hw ften an academic paper has been cited in future papers. H-index (Hirsch number) - is a graph based n the set f a researcher's mst cited papers and the number f citatins each has received in ther papers. Impact factr - measures the number f citatins t academic jurnals and is used t indicate the imprtance f a jurnal t its field. At Salfrd we subscribe t the tw main databases that prvide biblimetric data: Web f Knwledge and Scpus. This is a guide t using thse databases. Access T access either database: G t the Student Channel at Click the SOLAR Library Search link (listed under Web/ICT Resurces). Click the Databases link at the tp f the screen. Type in the name f the database yu want, then click the Find databases buttn.

2 Web f Science Web f Science The basic Search screen will allw yu t find biblimetric infrmatin fr an authr based n citatins indexed within the Web f Science database. Type in the authr s name fllwed by initials, r if yu are unsure f the secnd initial use *, e.g. Craig P* Select Authr frm the menu, then click Search. A list f articles fr all authrs with names matching yur search will be displayed. Use the ptins in the panel n the lefthand side f the screen t narrw yur results, fr example, by research area r by the authr s institutin. Tick the bxes yu want, then click Refine. A set f recrds that are likely t have been written by yur authr will be displayed. Yu may Cllabrative Research need t use the Refine Results ptins again t ensure yu have the crrect results. Yu can als use Web f Science t search fr biblimetric data n tw r mre When yu are cnfident yu have retrieved the crrect set f results click the Create Citatin Reprt link. [Feb14 Anne Sherwin] 2

3 Web f Science The Citatin reprt analyses the articles in the set yu have retrieved. Graphs are displayed fr the last 20 years fr the number f articles published and the number f citatins received per year. In this example the authr s h-index is 31. This means that 31 articles (in this set f results) have been cited at least 31 times each. A table shwing a breakdwn f the number citatins per article per year is displayed. Click the arrw t see earlier years results. Cllabrative Research Yu can als use Web f Science t search fr biblimetric data n tw r mre researchers wrking tgether. Start at the Basic Search screen (see p.2). Click the Add Anther Field link. Yu can add mre than ne. Type in the authrs names, change the menus t Authr and click Search. Use the Refine Results ptins (as described abve) until yu are satisfied yu have the crrect set f results, then click the Create Citatin Reprt link. [Feb14 Anne Sherwin] 3

4 Web f Science Cited Reference Search The Citatin Reprt generated frm the basic search (i.e. pp.2-4) reflects nly thse items indexed within Web f Science. T include citatins t articles nt indexed within Web f Science yu need t use a Cited Reference Search. Select Cited Reference Search frm the menu. Type in the authr s name. Put in the title f the jurnal (if required). Yu must use the abbreviated title, s first click View abbreviatin list and brwse t find the jurnal title yu want. Click Search. If yu wish t see the articles that have cited this paper, tick the nes yu want (in this example, the 1996 article), then click the Finish Search buttn. Nte: these duplicate recrds appear n the database because the article was incrrectly cited in subsequent papers in these cases the page numbers and/r year are wrng. 5 Web f Science Jurnal Citatin Reprts Jurnal Citatin Reprts is a cmprehensive resurce that allws yu t evaluate and cmpare jurnals using citatin data drawn frm ver 10,000 schlarly and technical jurnals, which includes virtually all areas f science, technlgy, and scial sciences. Jurnal Citatin Reprts can shw yu the: mst frequently cited jurnals in a field. highest impact jurnals in a field. largest jurnals in a field. It is useful tl t help yu decide which jurnals yu culd submit yur paper t, fr maximum impact. Cautin Yu shuld nt depend slely n citatin data in yur jurnal evaluatins. Citatin data is nt meant t replace infrmed peer review. Careful attentin shuld be paid t the many cnditins that can influence citatin rates such as language, jurnal histry and frmat, publicatin schedule, and subject specialty. Fr mre infrmatin see the sectin Using Jurnal Citatin Reprts Wisely, which is available thrugh the Infrmatin fr New Users link nce in Jurnal Citatin Reprts. Click the Jurnal Citatin Reprts link at the tp f the screen. Chse the brad subject area yu want, and the year, if yu want the data frm an earlier year. Click the SUBMIT buttn. [Feb14 Anne Sherwin] 5

6 Select yur subject area. T chse mre than ne hld dwn the Ctrl key while yu click. Web f Science Select View Jurnal Data, and Jurnal Title frm the menu. Click SUBMIT. A list f jurnals in yur chsen subject area(s) will be displayed, in alphabetical rder. T find the highest impact titles, select Impact Factr frm the menu and click SORT AGAIN. Fr mre infrmatin abut any jurnal click its title link. This will take yu a detailed breakdwn f infrmatin, such as the jurnal s Impact Factr, Immediacy Index and Cited Half-life and explains what each f these means and hw it is calculated. Remember: Jurnal Citatin Reprts nly assesses the impact f a jurnal, nt the impact f individual articles within that jurnal r f individual authrs. Hwever, in the case f highly specialised jurnals, it can help indicate the impact f the field f research cvered by that jurnal. [Feb14 Anne Sherwin] 6

7 Scpus Scpus Scpus prvides biblimetric data in a similar manner t Web f Science. The main differences between the tw databases are: Subject cverage. Bth databases cver science subjects extensively; Scpus indexes mre jurnals in the fields f business, management and related disciplines, and Web f Science has better cverage f arts and humanities areas. Timespan. Citatin data in Web f Science is frm 1900 nwards; in Scpus it is frm 1995 nwards. 8 Scpus The table shws the mst recent years citatins. T extend the display t earlier years select frm the menus. Use either f these checkbxes if yu want t remve self-citatins frm the data. Remember that in highly specialised fields, self-citatin may be inevitable as there are s few researching in that area that cllabratin may be essential. Click any f the blue numbers fr a list f the citing articles. The authr s h-index. Click the h-graph buttn fr a chart displaying this. Jurnal Analyzer Use the Jurnal Analyzer t cmpare up t ten Scpus surces n parameters such as ttal number f citatins, articles published, percentage f articles nt cited, and trend line. (Nte that yu need t have Adbe Flash Player installed and JavaScript enabled t use Jurnal Analyzer.) On the Scpus hmepage click Analyze Jurnals. Type in the title f the jurnal yu want nte, yu can als search by ISSN r publisher, by selecting frm the menu. Click the Search buttn. A list f matching titles will be displayed. Hver yur muse ver any data pint n the graph t see its value. Use the Zm Year slider t change the date range displayed. Click Shw inf fr infrmatin abut the jurnal. Yu can cmpare up t ten jurnals at a time by fllwing the steps n page 9 and adding each title t the chart area. Graphs like this will be displayed.
