1 The Café at the New Room John Wesley s Chapel, Bristol Recruitment of a Café Manager Are you a 'people person' known for promoting exemplary customer service? Have you proven cooking and management experience in the café and hospitality industry? Do you have an eye for cafe business and future development? We are looking for a unique individual to fill this new and exciting role. The Café at the New Room is due to become operational from April 2017 with a 40-cover seating area within a newly created atrium environment. The café is part of the overall visitor attraction at the New Room which includes the chapel, museum, shop, library and education facilities. The café is at ground floor level and is immediately accessible from the Horsefair. The brand-new café and adjoining shop will serve customers visiting this historic site and the manager s role will be pivotal in developing the retail services on site. As the key contact person, you will be responsible for the management of the café and delivery of excellent customer service across all aspects of the retail operation. Leading and running the café, the café, you will actively promote the delivery of responsive and innovative services, liaising closely with the New Room manager, staff and volunteers to ensure that customers needs are met and expectations exceeded. You will appoint and line manage an assistant manager and work with a network of volunteers to support delivery both in the café and shop. Volunteers will play a vital role in the running of the cafe so experience to train, motivate and manage a team of volunteers to deliver a commercial enterprise is vital. You will need to operate an efficient administrative function by developing collaborative relationships and clear lines of communication between suppliers and other catering providers. You will be responsible for managing your own specialist functions with a set of local strategic aims and key performance indicators agreed with the New Room manager to whom you will report. You will also become part of the New Room staff team. To be successful in this role you will need a sound understanding and experiences of managing hospitality operations either in cafes, restaurants, hotels, events or food oriented management. The New Room is the oldest Methodist chapel in the world so we are looking for a café which embodies Fair Trade principles and excellent work ethics. The need for outstanding customer service is essential as is the ability to grow the commercial side of the operation. Collaboration with the staff team and volunteers is paramount in the role

2 to ensure support needs are met, monitored and evaluated. This includes ensuring a consistent and welcoming introduction for customers to the café and New Room. Above all, you will be passionate about creating a positive environment which meets the needs of customers. Terms and Conditions Place of work: The New Room/John Wesley s Chapel, 36 The Horsefair, Bristol, BS1 3JE Reports to: New Room Manager Hours: The post is full-time at 40 hours per week. The New Room will be open 7 days a week from April 2017; its provisional hours will be Monday to Saturday from 10.30am to 4pm and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. It is envisaged that a core pattern of hours for the role will be agreed but significant flexibility is required, including evening and weekend working due to the nature of the post. Terms of appointment: Permanent Due to the nature of this post, the appointment will be subject to a satisfactory criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service in England and Wales. The appointment is also made subject to the satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period. Starting date: Monday 20th February 2017 Remuneration: 25,000 per annum Sick Pay: Entitlement in accordance with the Methodist Church terms and conditions of employment. Holiday Entitlement: 25 days per annum Travel expenses: These are paid according to guidelines produced by the New Room Trustees. Pension: A pension arrangement will be established with the Lay Employees Pension Scheme of the Methodist Church (or other provider if you wish and we agree) with a contribution of 6% of salary by you and by us. There will, from time to time, be a variation of duties depending on needs. The person appointed must be someone who is in sympathy with the calling of the Methodist Church which is to respond to the gospel of God's love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission.

4 Background information The following provides some background information for applicants; 1) The New Room/John Wesley s Chapel Created by John Wesley in 1739 at the very outset of his evangelical work and rebuilt by him in 1748, the new Room is Methodism s oldest building. It was not only the centre for the development of the religious societies encouraged by the two Wesley brothers, but also a place that helped shape the Methodist movement. Within its walls the early preaching journeys were planned, the class system was devised, and a pattern for seeking social justice was encouraged. Among other things, the New Room saw the promotion of education, the provision of the first free medical dispensary, and the launch of John Wesley s anti-slavery campaign. John Wesley spent more nights at the New Room than anywhere else and the famous hymnwriter and preacher Charles Wesley lived in Bristol for many years. The New Room is often described as the cradle of Methodism and is a significant Methodist Heritage site attracting local, national and international visitors. The Trustees have a fourfold aim as embodied in the New Room s Mission Statement: 1) To promote the New Room and Charles Wesley s House as places of historical and contemporary significance in the spiritual and social life of Bristol, the nation and the world. 2) To tell the story of John and Charles Wesley so as to increase people s understanding of their respective contributions and their relevance to thought, belief and action today. 3) To develop the New Room as a sustainable heritage attraction, educational resource, cultural venue and community facility in the heart of the city. 4) To offer (people passing through the centre of Bristol) opportunities for reflection, challenge and spiritual encounter. In 2010 the Warden initiated discussions to look at creating significant improvements to the facilities at the New Room and this led to what is now described as the Horsefair Project. This 4.5 million project has seen the construction of a new three-storey building in the Horsefair Courtyard of the New Room which will include a café and shop on the ground-floor. 2) The Bristol District of the Methodist Church The District covers an area which includes the city of Bristol, most of Gloucestershire and the northern parts of the old county boundaries of Somerset and Wiltshire. It is made up of a mix of urban and rural communities and congregations, served by some 70 ministers plus numerous paid and voluntary lay workers in 10 Circuits. The District seeks to work in partnership with the New Room trustees to make use of what is a unique resource.
