1 APJ ABDUL KALAM TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY EE100 Basics of Electrical SAMPLE QUESTION PAPER Maximum Marks 100 Part- A (10 questions) Attempt all the questions 10*4=40 1. We have two identical 10 V electromotive voltage sources and two identical 20 resistors connected together as shown in the figure. Find the current passing through each of the resistor. 2. List out the seven steps to be taken to solve electromagnetic induction problem. 3. Which component, the resistor or the capacitor, will drop more voltage in this circuit?

Draw a phasor diagram showing the trigonometric relationship between resistance, reactance, and impedance in this series circuit: Show mathematically how the resistance and reactance combine in series to produce a total impedance (scalar quantities, all). Then, show how to analyze this same circuit using complex numbers: regarding each of the component as having its own impedance, demonstrating mathematically how these impedances add up to comprise the total impedance (in both polar and rectangular forms). 5. What are the advantages of Hydropower? 6. What are the different types of turbines used in Hydroelectric Power Plants? 7. How Does a Transformer Work? 8.What are Taps and When are They Used? 9.What are you mean by distribution board system? 10.What is loop in system of electrical wiring?
3 Part B (Answer any 4 Questions) 11(a) Determine the resistance between the terminals A&B and hence find the current through the voltage source. Refer figure (b) Find the total resistance between A&B terminals for the network shown in figure (a) Determine the value current in 40 Ohms resistance. Refer figure 8.1
4 12(b) Determine the current flowing in each of the batteries and the voltage difference between 10 Ohms resistance. Refer the following figure.

(i) (ii) Calculate the mutual inductance M 1 assuming that all the flux from the solenoid passes through the outer coil. Relate the mutual inductance M to the self-inductances L 1 and L 2 of the solenoid and the coil.

Apparent power is the power that appears to the source because of the circuit impedance. Since the impedance is the total opposition to ac, the apparent power is that power the voltage source "sees." Apparent power is the combination of true power and reactive power. Apparent power is not found by simply adding true power and reactive power just as impedance is not found by adding resistance and reactance. 15(a)Explain with examples how power factor is calculated in ac circuits? 15(b)What are the major components of a Hydroelectric Power Plant? 16. List out various substation components and explain in detail. (Answer 17 or 18; 19 or 20)
