3 Greetings Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, The Czech Republic has the honour of welcoming participants to the 1 st Canoe Sprint World Cup 2009 Račice. The International Canoe Federation, ICF, conferred the organisation of this important sporting event on the Czech Canoe Union. The World Cup will be held at the Račice Rowing Course and are by no means the first important sporting event to be held at Račice. Sportcentrum Račice has successfully organised several international events of similar importance in the past: 1986 World Rowing Junior Championships 1993 World Canoeing Junior Championships 1993 World Rowing Championships 1999 World Fishing Championships 2002 World Rowing Masters Regatta 2004 Canoeing World Cup 2006 European Canoeing Championships 2007 World Canoeing Junior Championships For the Czech Canoe Union and the Sportcentrum Račice the 1 st Canoe Sprint World Cup 2009 Račice provides a further opportunity to showcase the quality of the Račice Regatta Course to the outside world as well as our organisational ability. This is very important for us, not only to attract further major canoeing competitions to the Czech Republic, but also to support Prague s bid to host the Olympic Games in 2020, as the Olympic rowing and canoeing events would be held at the Račice Sports Centre. In conclusion, as Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 1 st Canoe Sprint World Cup 2009 Račice in Račice I would like to express my conviction that the World Cup will be staged to the complete satisfaction of competitors, their support teams, spectators, international sports officials and the organisers. 5 Greetings Welcome to the Czech Republic Prague the capital of the Czech Republic Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Situated on the Vltava River in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for over 1000 years. The city proper is home to nearly 1.2 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million. Prague is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is among the most visited cities on the continent. Since 1992, the historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Over the years Prague has also been referred to as the mother of cities (Praga mater urbium), the city of a hundred spires and the golden city. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has become one of Europe s (and the world s) most popular tourist destinations. It is the sixth most visited European city after London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin. Prague suffered considerably less damage during World War II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to remain intact. It contains one of the world s most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Art Nouveau to Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern. Some of the best known sights are: the Old Town (Staré Město) with its Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, the picturesque Charles Bridge, the New Town (Nové město) with its busy and historic Wenceslas Square, Malá Strana (the Lesser Quarter), Prague Castle (the largest castle complex in the world) with its St. Vitus Cathedral, Josefov (the old Jewish quarter) with the Old Jewish Cemetery and Old New Synagogue, the Lennon Wall, the museum of the Heydrich assassination in the crypt of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the National Museum, Vyšehrad castle, Petřínská rozhledna, an observation tower on Petřín hill, which is an approximate 1:5 copy of the Eiffel Tower, the New Jewish Cemetery in Olšany, location of Franz Kafka s grave, the Dancing House (Fred and Ginger Building), the Mucha Museum showcasing the Art Nouveau works of Alfons Mucha, and places connected to writers living in the city, such as the Franz Kafka museum. 7 The Course Račice GPS: LOC: 50 27'27.77 N, 14 20' E The Račice Regatta Course Centre was developed from a former sand pit and was completed in The total length of the water channel is 2350 meters and the main channel is 130 meters wide with 8 Albano-buoyed lanes. The Regatta Course Centre houses a restaurant, finish towers, the boathouse, changing facilities, showers and WC for competitors. The town of Račice was established in 1295 by King Václav II. Until 1960 it was a part of the town of Štětí and has been a separate legal entity since In 1980 sand quarrying commenced in Račice and in 1986 the rowing course was opened for the World Rowing Junior Championships. Račice is located 158 m above sea level, 8 km north of the town of Roudnice n/l., which is at the 50 km exit of the D8 motorway in the direction Prague Teplice. Further information:

A medical center will operate at the regatta course with ambulance and first aid. The costs above the regular are to be covered by the medical insurance policy; the Organization Committee does not take responsibility for such expenditures.

10 Accommodation Mělník Mělník is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. This ancient royal town has approx. 20,000 residents and is famous for its vineyards and the annual celebration of the grape harvest. It lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers close to famous Říp hill, approximately 35 km north of Prague. Mělník has a lot of interesting historical places and a wide range of cultural events. This region is one of the most important agricultural areas of the Czech Republic. Litoměřice The most important town in the region of Račice. The third oldest Czech royal town, a title bestowed on Litomeřice by the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II in Today Litomeřice is a picturesque town with a rich history. The Old Town is surrounded by fortifications, which preserve the gothic, renaissance and baroque buildings of this strictly protected heritage area. Litomeřice lies on the confluence of the rivers Elbe and Ohře, sheltered from the North by the Central Bohemian Mountains. Roudnice n/l. Roudnice n/l. is a town on the left bank of the Elbe River. Roudnice is one of the oldest Czech towns with the first records dating back to the year Roudnice nad Labem has a population of around 13,500. The town occupies an area of km². Close to the town and rising to a height of 456 metres is the hill of Říp with a Romanesque rotunda at the top. The dominant feature of Roudnice is its baroque chateau and monastery church. The town is close to the exit at 27 km along the D8 motorway from Prague to Teplice.

12 Necessary information about the competition Damage deposit At the hotel team leaders have to deposit a below specified amount for the eventual damaged caused by the team members during World Cup. This deposit is to be returned in full amount if no damage is to be found at the check-off. Less then 10 persons: deposit 100, persons: deposit 200, 21 and more persons 300, The Organization Committee does not take any respon si bility for any extra services of the hotels, like mini bar, telephone, parking etc. These costs are directly collected by the hotel. The rooms are to vacate till 11 a.m. on the day of the departure as it is internationally usual. Insurance All official participants of the International Canoe Competition are strongly advised to take out a medical insurance policy in their respective countries.
