THE UNIVERSITY San José State University (SJSU) is a major, comprehensive public university located in the center of San José, California the heart of Silicon Valley. A member of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) System, SJSU is the oldest state university in California. Its distinctive character has been forged by its long history, its location and its vision a blend of the old and the new; the traditional and the innovative. Among its most prized traditions is an uncompromising commitment to offer access to higher education to all persons who meet the criteria for admission, and to provide for and support a faculty that is active in scholarship, research, technological innovation, community service and the arts. SJSU grants bachelor s and master s degrees in more than 240 areas of study as well as an Educational Doctorate and a joint Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Quality teaching and small classes are a priority, where tenured professors teach introductory as well as advanced courses. Among the top 200 universities in research and development expenditures (as surveyed by the National Science Foundation), SJSU offers rigorous course work and research opportunities to almost 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with more than 600 tenure/tenure track faculty, over 1,100+ parttime faculty, and 1,300 staff. 3 THE UNIVERSITY (continued) The unions represent the employees in the CSU system through collective bargaining agreements. The University community is proud of its cultural diversity across all constituencies. Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the University s academic colleges include: Applied Sciences and Arts; the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business; the Connie L. Lurie College of Education; the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering; Humanities & the Arts; Science; and Social Sciences. The University offers 82 bachelor s degrees with 66 concentrations, and 70 master s degrees with 25 concentrations. 4 University Learning Goals San José State University graduates will have developed: Specialized Knowledge Depth of knowledge required for a degree, as identified by its program learning outcomes. Broad Integrative Knowledge Mastery in each step of an investigative, creative or practical project (e.g. brainstorming, planning, formulating hypotheses or complex questions, designing, creating, completing, and communicating). An understanding of the implications of results or findings from a particular work in a societal context (e.g. social or economic implications of a scientific finding). THE POSITION The Dean of the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business reports directly to the Provost and serves as the senior administrator of the College. As such, the successful candidate will be the principal champion for innovative vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College and its academic programs. The Dean will be responsible for academic and strategic planning, program assessment, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, budgeting, facilities management, and College relations in a vibrant, complex, and diverse academic unit. In addition, the Dean will be expected to be an active participant in raising funds and developing resources for the College, as well as building and strengthening relationships with the diverse community around San José. The Dean will enjoy working in a college with strong professional unity; excellent community relations; and programs that are highly regarded locally, regionally, and nationally. The Dean will secure funding and resources to develop and implement the programs. Develop Sustainable Financial Support: A key challenge for the next Dean will be to provide financial support to the college s academic programs across the full range of its offerings, while allocating additional resources to support strategic growth in areas that have been identified as institutional priorities. 7

8 Essential Duties & Responsibilities Provides leadership to faculty and staff, with the vision, passion, creativity, and integrity necessary to develop and accomplish College and University goals. Provides direction and support to departments/schools to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to College and University goals and strategies. Articulates and advocates the role of the college on campus and in the Silicon Valley community. Develops and sustains partnerships with stakeholders across the College, University and broader community to achieve excellence in the College and University s teaching, research, and service missions. Generates external resources in coordination with the division of university advancement to successfully meet fundraising targets. Ensures the maintenance of college accreditation. Develops, implements and monitors the College s strategic plans and activities, ensuring consistency and integration with faculty, department, program, and university goals and strategies. Leads a management team that includes associate deans, department chairs/school directors, the College Resource Analyst and development officer(s) within the college. Responsible for the college s effective recruitment and evaluation of the faculty, staff, and administrators. Manages state-provided resources strategically, fairly and effectively. Qualifications Ph.D. or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution, and/or substantial business experience in a senior leadership position. Five or more years experience in academic administration or executive positions in public or private sector. Strong understanding of business education and research acquired through education or experience. Knowledge, Skills, Attributes and Abilities Ability as an innovative, visionary and entrepreneurial leader with high personal integrity who will work collegially with University leadership and the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business faculty and staff within a shared governance structure to develop, articulate and achieve the strategic goals of the College and University. 8

The capacity to attract and generate external resources in coordination with the division of university advancement. Knowledge of business education, business research, and of contemporary business practice; the ability to articulate a vision of how curricular development can enhance business education; and ability to provide resources and inspiration to support basic and applied research. A style of open communication and transparent decision-making. Ability to develop partnerships and to promote the College and University. Ability to lead a management team. Experience and ability to drive results in a large, complex organization. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse, multicultural environment.
