2 The Opportunity Cleveland State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean will be the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, and will lead the College in advancing its mission in teaching, research, and service to the community. The Dean will have a visible presence in Cleveland, throughout Ohio, and nationally, as she/he enhances the College s national ranking and supports the University s mission of engaged learning. Applications and nominations may come from the academic, public, private, or nonprofit sectors. The successful candidate will qualify for a tenured appointment on the basis of scholarship or distinguished service. The College The Levin College of Urban Affairs includes the Department of Urban Studies and several Urban Research Centers. The Department consists of 25 multidisciplinary faculty members, 44 part-time faculty, and 700 students. It offers the following graduate degree programs: Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Public Affairs; MS in Urban Studies; fully accredited Master of Public Administration; MA in Environmental Studies; fully accredited Master of Urban Planning and Development; and Master of Nonprofit Administration and Leadership. The Department offers six majors leading to the BA degree: Urban Studies, Public Safety Management, Nonprofit Administration, Environmental Studies, Organizational Leadership, and Economic Development. In addition, the Department offers joint graduate degrees with the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, several graduate and undergraduate certificate programs, and accelerated five-year undergraduate/ graduate degrees. The Urban Research Centers constitute the largest resource in Ohio dedicated to urban policy research. The Centers develop innovative, quantifiable solutions to community challenges. These centers and their programs have served as the focal point of applied research, technical assistance and public service in Ohio for over 35 years. More than 20 professional staff and scholars conduct research and provide services in city management, community development, demographic analysis, economic development, energy policy, environmental policy and management, health policy and management, nonprofit management, public financial management and public management and

3 administration. The Levin College Forum connects the college and the community and serves as a catalyst for thoughtful public debate, innovative thinking, new ideas, and timely action addressing critical issues that impact Ohio. The College is ranked among the top schools of urban affairs in the country and is ranked second in Ohio. The College s MPA program specialization in city management/urban policy has been ranked second by U.S. News and World Report since 1998, and nonprofit management is ranked twelfth. Planetizen has ranked the College s Masters of Urban Planning and Development program among the top fifteen in both the economic development and community development categories. The University Founded in 1964, Cleveland State University is a public research institution that provides a dynamic setting for engaged learning. With an enrollment of more than 17,500 students, 8 colleges and more than 200 academic programs, CSU provides a hands-on learning environment that connects faculty and students, ideas and real-world experience. In 2015, the university was selected to receive the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which reflects the close connectivity to the public and private sectors in the region surrounding an institution. With more than $500 million in new construction and building renovations on its downtown Cleveland campus, Cleveland State is a 21 st century urban university for the student of today and tomorrow. The greater Cleveland area, which is in the midst of a renaissance, offers an outstanding quality of life, combining cultural and other amenities of a large city with a wide range of attractive communities in which to live.

4 Minimum Qualifications: All candidates must have: a Ph.D. or a terminal degree in a discipline related to the programs of the College; management experience within a shared governance environment as an administrator in an academic or comparable setting; and experience in community collaborations, including with private, nonprofit and public sector entities. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates will demonstrate: passion and creativity to inspire and lead an urban affairs College in its mission; a vision for university-community partnerships; significant academic administrative experience; a proven record of success in fundraising, including grants, funded research, scholarships, and endowments; national prominence as a thought leader related to the College s mission; a strong record of scholarship; success in promoting excellence and innovation in teaching; a record of supporting faculty research; a record of promoting and sustaining diversity in an institutional setting; and a commitment to the values of academic freedom and shared governance.

5 The appointment will be effective July 1, Salary will be commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
