The healthcare industry generates more new jobs from year to year than any other industry, a trend that is expected to continue through the next decade. Healthcare is increasingly complex, multidisciplinary, and collaborative, with knowledge in the health sciences doubling every 18 months. Contemporary health education requires a multidisciplinary community of scholars. The Blair College of Health will provide such a venue within a private university environment as a major asset to Charlotte, the healthcare hub of the Piedmont of North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina. The College of Health houses the Presbyterian School of Nursing and the Wellness Institute. The Presbyterian School of Nursing Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens is the largest private producer of new RNs in North Carolina and upholds a tradition of more than a century of excellence in nursing education. We currently support a number of initiatives including a new patient simulation lab and several partnerships for community-based service-learning. The School has 32 full-time faculty and approximately 550 students in its ASN, BSN, and MSN programs. The Philosophy of the Presbyterian School of Nursing Among the key tenets of our School s philosophy are the following: Nursing is a caring profession and practice discipline based on nursing knowledge, theory, research, and evidence-based practice. The nurse as a leader and advocate responds to change and coordinates, manages, and integrates healthcare in 4
5 collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The nurse uses interpersonal skills, the nursing process, therapeutic interventions, and the teaching and learning process to develop effective partnerships. Care is continually evaluated to improve quality and manage resources appropriately. Informatics is used to communicate and manage knowledge. Clinical practice effectively develops reflection, problem-solving skills, competencies and the use of technology. Nursing standards and legal statutes are followed. Nursing education in a comprehensive university rooted in the liberal arts provides opportunities for exposure to diverse perspective and experiences. Knowledge from the arts and sciences enables the student to develop and use personal standards to make reasoned choices and to articulate ideas effectively. Learning best occurs in an atmosphere of responsibility and respect in which students and teachers share common educational goals. The faculty as facilitators of learning design experiences with students that promote professional values and role development, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and caring practices. The educational climate fosters a commitment to lifelong learning. Position Profile The Dean of the Blair College of Health is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, reviewing, and administering all the programs in the College, for providing oversight to the Presbyterian School of Nursing and the Wellness Institute, and for ensuring the maintenance of all accreditations.
