2 Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management Niagara University POSITION PROFILE and ANNOUNCEMENT Niagara University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management. THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1856, Niagara University (NU) is a private liberal arts university with a strong, values-based Catholic tradition which offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs serving nearly 3,700 students. Its four academic divisions include the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Basic to the academic, cocurricular and extracurricular programs at NU is the conviction that the students need, on the one hand, to be prepared for productive roles in society and, on the other, to be provided with the opportunity to fulfill their intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual potential. For more information please view the University website at COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management of Niagara University, established in 1968 as the Institute of Transportation, Travel and Tourism offering the world s first bachelor s degree in tourism. The College provides a curriculum and learning environment that gives 2 P a g e

3 students a variety of experiences and skills necessary to assume leadership positions in today s fast-changing hospitality and tourism industry. It is a founding member of Leading Hotel Schools of the World, now known as Hotel Schools of Distinction (HSD). The College is also ranked in the top 20 hospitality and tourism programs in the country. Presently the college offers undergraduate programs of study in hospitality, including hotel, restaurant, food service, and club management; tourism and recreation management; and sport management. In addition, a master s program in sport management was introduced in the fall of In addition, there are four custom-designed international programs including work abroad in Lake Como, Italy and a dual degree program in Germany. Recent educational outcomes for the college are quite impressive. Recent data suggest that 100% of all graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate studies within 6 months of graduation. Mission of the School The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management is dedicated to providing an innovative, high-quality education that prepares students for leadership roles in hospitality, tourism, and sport by promoting professionalism and integrating technology, management, entrepreneurship, service and experiential learning into the educational experience. The college strives to enrich students learning through culturally diverse and international learning opportunities. The program and curriculum has been designed to provide a current and high quality education so that graduates may become leaders in the worldwide hospitality and tourism industry. Niagara Global Tourism Institute Helping Western New York Deliver on the Tourism Promise The purpose of the Niagara Global Tourism Institute (NGTI) is to establish a continuous collaborative process that will allow Western New York to stand out in the highly competitive markets of tourism and hospitality training, and tourism destination development. The NGTI will build upon the established expertise of the faculty of Niagara University s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management and will also pursue a broader, multidisciplinary vision of what the tourism sector will become. Faculty and students across the university will be engaged in research and innovation that is relevant to tourism technology, hospitality and business administration. 3 P a g e

4 THE LOCATION Niagara University's location is unrivaled. Located atop the rugged, water-carved Niagara River gorge, the 160- acre campus is just four miles from the world famous cataracts of Niagara Falls, N.Y. The beautifully maintained suburban campus is an attractive blend of 19th and 20th century architecture, overlooking the Province of Ontario. The location of the main campus adjacent to the international border between the United States and Canada and relatively near the American and Canadian cities of Buffalo and Toronto, creates an international milieu. The cost-of-living index in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls metropolitan area ranks among the 10 lowest areas in the nation. The Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and the Buffalo Bisons Triple-A baseball team are among the more prominent professional sports teams in the area. DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT The Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management is responsible for the general administration of the college and is also charged with fostering and nurturing the growth and academic excellence of the college, in accordance with the mission of the university. This position must provide passionate leadership to a talented group of faculty and staff to continue the growth and development of current and future programs offered and to continue providing students with exceptional learning and mentoring opportunities. RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain the academic integrity, quality and growth of all programs offered by the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management through the review of curriculum against emerging industry trends, professional standards and accreditation expectations.. Provide academic and administrative leadership to faculty and staff to achieve the school vision and to ensure programs meet the needs of the diverse student body. Work with local, state, regional and international tourism organizations and industry partners to develop cooperative programs/initiatives to provide students with professional applications and experience. Oversee the management, preparations and analysis of school budgets and financial forecasts and reports. 4 P a g e

5 Manage the progress and achievement of strategic enrollment targets and assume responsibility for the development and implementation of programs to achieve them. Analyze business opportunities prioritizing them in accordance to their potential for increasing revenue and profitability. Demonstrate depth and breadth of understanding of issues facing program areas and impact to curriculum delivery. Engage the community and the region as a catalyst to strategically increase tourism in the Western New York region. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Ph.D. or other terminal degree in appropriate discipline related to hospitality, tourism, sports management, business, or higher education administration from an accredited institution. Notable record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Employment history of academic administrative experience in higher education. A minimum of ten years work experience in higher education. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Demonstrate intellectual distinction as a faculty member along with strong leadership, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills. Articulate the importance of Niagara University s General Education component as essential to students in the college. Advocate for the critical interdependency of the liberal arts and professional education. Deep knowledge of current theories, principles, and practices associated with one or more disciplines in the college. Must possess experience in college administration including curricula, instruction, assessment, and development. Must possess experience with accreditation standards and processes, ideally with the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA). 5 P a g e
