2 The oldest accredited physical therapy program in the state of Georgia requires an innovative academic/practitioner to assume leadership of a diverse, nationally recognized faculty comprised of teachers, clinicians, and researchers renowned for their foundational and clinical expertise as well as academic and research programs on the cutting edge of the physical therapy discipline. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University s Doctorate in Physical Therapy program is committed to supporting and fostering focused, productive, and high-quality research. The department s grant-supported research involves all faculty members and includes collaborations with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and the Neuroscience Institute within Georgia State. Additionally, the school partners with Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Grady Hospital. Students have the exceptional opportunity to engage in top quality research working with recognized principal investigators. Class of % The Lewis School, CAPTE accredited and Class of % headed by a dynamic and energetic dean, seeks a visionary leader for the physical therapy department who can provide leadership in academic, research, service, and clinical practice programming. The new chair will enjoy the strong support of school and university administration in advancing the work of the Department of Physical Therapy, with a mandate to enhance and develop the research capacity of the institution, to strengthen and grow the academic/research team, and to serve as the ambassador of the program to internal and external constituencies. Key responsibilities include articulation of a challenging but achievable vision and advocacy for the continued evolution of this already vibrant department. Positioning the Department of Physical Therapy for nationwide primacy in interdisciplinary healthcare, the new chair will be a consummate team player and a strong advocate for the department. S/he will also display a commitment to academic rigor and imaginative research, demonstrating resourcefulness in planning, diligence in execution, and an unwavering devotion to the advancement of the physical therapy discipline.

3 The Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions The Lewis School is a national leader in preparing the next generation of clinicians and scholars who are critical to improving individual and community health in the southeastern region and beyond. Degrees offered include Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies-Health Informatics; Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Nutrition, and Respiratory Therapy; Master of Science in Nursing, Nutrition, Respiratory Therapy; and doctorates in Nursing Practice, Physical Therapy, and Nursing; as well as specialty degree and nondegree options. A newly developed Master of Occupational Therapy program will be offered beginning spring The school serves approximately 1,450 undergraduate students and 475 graduate students, 58% of whom are from a minority or protected class. It also boasts exceptional certification and licensure pass rates across all healthcare disciplines. 4 Georgia State has created new research centers and has launched the Second Century Initiative an ambitious program with the dual goal of (1) hiring 100 senior faculty members to serve in interdisciplinary research clusters, and (2) placing a new emphasis on the translation of faculty research into products and companies. This commitment has brought the University to new heights of research accomplishment, as reflected in sponsored research and federal research funding. The university is expanding its research portfolio, in part by implementing a five year hiring initiative to build scholarly strength around interdisciplinary research themes. The university s strategic plan also calls for leveraging the research and outcomes achieved from faculty in their Atlanta urban lab setting to help address opportunities and issues facing cities around the globe. Georgia State s global connections are growing, with five faculty task forces seeking to collaborate with universities in emerging markets in China, Korea, Turkey, Brazil and South Africa. The Position Department chair is responsible for: 1. The vision, leadership, and administration of the educational, research, service, and clinical practice programs, including evaluating and developing faculty and staff, and fiscal planning. 2. Strategic planning and goal setting for the department in concert with the college and university strategic plans. 3. The development and maintenance of effective department operations including workflow, student learning outcomes, and quality curriculum. 4. Working collaboratively with other departments within the Lewis School to promote innovation and creativity. 5. All facets of the physical therapy program including compliance with CAPTE accreditation standards. 6. Hiring, development, and evaluation of faculty.

5 7. Mentoring and development of faculty and staff members to maximize performance, build leadership pipelines, and enhance teamwork. 8. Promoting the core values of the Department of Physical Therapy and the Lewis School. The successful candidate should have: 1. A vision for the department s education, research, and service mission. 2. Effective communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills. 3. A current, active program of research (highly desirable). 4. The qualification to be considered for tenure at the associate professor or full professor rank. 5. A Ph.D. or equivalent physical therapy licensure or eligibility for licensure in Georgia. 6. Experience in teaching, research, and practice. 7. Evidence of increasing responsibility over time of academic leadership and management. 8. Experience with programmatic accreditation.
