4 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS DEAN Emporia State University s School of Business seeks applications or nominations for the position of School of Business Dean. Emporia State University (ESU) serves more than 6,000 students with internationally-recognized academic programs in Business, Teaching, Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Library & Information Management. ESU competes in Division II athletics and has a dynamic, diverse learning environment led by highly-qualified faculty. One of six public universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, ESU was founded in 1863 as the first public institution of higher learning in Kansas. ESU serves students from around the world. Fall semester, 2015 enrollment includes students from 94 Kansas counties, 46 states, and 61 countries. More than 60,000 alumni live in all 50 states and 70 countries. Located in the heart of the scenic Flint Hills, ESU is in close proximity to Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City. The Kansas Business Hall of Fame, Koch Center for Leadership and Ethics at Emporia State University, and Kansas Small Business Development Center are housed within the School of Business. ESU s School of Business Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School. The Dean is responsible for providing vision and leadership in the areas of academic scholarship, community and alumni engagement, student and faculty recruitment, and fundraising. 5 QUALIFICATIONS, ROLE, AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS DEAN n Qualifications The threshold qualification is academic experience warranting tenure at the full professor level in accordance with the School s promotion and tenure policies ( facultystaff/documents/sbfacultyhandbook.pdf). Consideration may also be given to a candidate with extraordinary business executive experience appropriate for the Dean of an AACSB-accredited business school. The successful candidate will have an established reputation as a leader of stature in academic and/or business environments and demonstrated ability to inspire the faculty, staff, and students with a sense of pride and purpose. n Role The Dean of the School of Business is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School. The Dean is responsible for providing vision and leadership in the areas of academic scholarship, community and alumni engagement, student and faculty recruitment, and fundraising. As a transformational leader, the Dean will lead efforts to shape the future of the School, in line with the University s strategic plan, and define the School s standards of excellence. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and oversees the School s Chair of the Faculty as well as the School s academic support staff through the Associate Dean, Center Directors, and Administrative Officer. n Responsibilities The Dean will be expected to build upon the past and lead the School into the future. The mission of the School of Business is to adaptively provide access to innovative business preparation for limitless opportunities in the region and beyond. The Dean will play a significant role in supporting and promoting the following objectives which were developed in conjunction with the School of Business mission statement: Develop and deliver high quality, innovative undergraduate and graduate business programs adapted to the changing landscape of the global business community. Prepare students for professional careers through developing their knowledge and skills, and by creating opportunities through the School of Business with community partners. Recruit and retain diverse faculty who pursue teaching excellence, scholarship, and service to the profession. Foster a culture of intellectual inquiry that promotes an awareness of global issues, ethics, and social responsibility. Encourage effective engagement between the School and students, the University, and the global community. Additionally, the Dean will be expected to: Develop a vision and plan for the School of Business that projects beyond its current structure and programs while supporting and growing initiatives to increase enrollment, improve retention, and produce graduates prepared for the job market. Ensure that the curriculum remains current and relevant for the present and future business environment, develop innovative programs that will help grow the School s reputation and enrollment, and position the School to be a leader in the globalization/ internationalization of business education and practice. Be an advocate and effective spokesperson for the School within the University community and externally. Create opportunities leading to increased involvement and support of alumni, the business community, and other stakeholders. Lead fundraising efforts for the School in accordance with University policies and practices through corporate and individual giving, grants, and sponsored research. Provide strong, positive, and effective leadership for faculty, staff, and students by demonstrating a commitment to advancing faculty development, scholarship, transparency, and shared governance. Provide leadership in strategic planning and program assessment, while meeting AACSB standards and maintaining accreditation. Develop and implement strategies to increase diversity within the student body, faculty, and staff. Promote the acquisition and integration of leading-edge technology in learning, teaching, and operations. 6 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS MISSION Our mission is to provide access to innovative business preparation for limitless opportunities in the region and beyond. The School of Business currently serves over 950 students and has programs in accounting, business administration, business education, computer science, information systems, management, and marketing as well as master s programs in accounting, business administration, and business education. Specific programs are offered online and at our satellite campus in the Kansas City area. AACSB Accreditation In April 2002, Emporia State University s School of Business received accreditation from AACSB International, a mark of excellence borne by the highest echelon of business schools in the U.S. and worldwide. In 2012, the school received reaffirmation of its accreditation. Kansas Business Hall of Fame (KBHF) The KBHF, housed in the School of Business, serves as the State of Kansas chapter of the National Business Hall of Fame. The organization became a fully accredited member in September 1987, and is the only business recognition program in Kansas. The Kansas Business Hall of Fame recognizes business leaders who have added to the prestige and growth of Kansas. Partnership with Kansas Small Business Development Center The Emporia State Kansas Small Business Development Center (KSBDC) provides high-quality, substantive services to small business in the area of retention, expansion, and start-up. The KSBDC began in 1983, and has been an integral player in economic development in Kansas. Kansas SBDC clients consistently grow average annual sales at a pace much faster than all Kansas businesses. In 2014, the KSBDC at Emporia State worked with 2,392 clients, with one-third being existing businesses. These clients increased their annual sales by 27.6% versus all Kansas businesses at 4.5%. Business Resource Center (BRC) In an effort to build student retention and foster community engagement, the School of Business at Emporia State University opened the Business Resource Center. The BRC organizes and supports a wide array of student services including advising, student organizations, and test makeups. It provides information on scholarships, student activities/competitions, the mentor program and other campus services. The Koch Center for Leadership and Ethics at Emporia State University The Center is an academic center that is a part of the School of Business at Emporia State University. The Center s goal is to engage students, faculty, and others in an open and ongoing discussion about ethical leadership in the life of an individual, in business and other organizations, and in communities. Honorary Student Organizations Recognized by AACSB Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students. The Emporia State chapter has been recognized as a distinguished chapter for several years and was awarded Superior Chapter at the 2015 annual meeting in Milwaukee, WI. Beta Gamma Sigma is an honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International. The Emporia State chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) qualified for Highest Honors for the academic year. This status is indicative of a campus where academic excellence is valued and where the faculty officers of the chapter work diligently to enhance Beta Gamma Sigma s stature on campus. 6 EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY

8 HIGH SCHOOL/COMMUNITY COLLEGE OUTREACH EFFORTS The School of Business has placed a priority on high school outreach and initiatives to support the focus of attaining college-ready students. The Accounting Pilot and Bridge Program: In fall 2013, Emporia State University s School of Business signed a statewide articulation agreement allowing students to complete a college-level accounting course taught at their high school by certified instructors. Business Career Day: Each fall, the School of Business invites high school students from across the state to participate in a career exploration event. During their time on campus, students attend professional presentations encompassing business careers and have an opportunity to visit with business professionals and faculty about their academic interests. Approximately 500 students and instructors attended the event in ERP Simulation: Several School of Business faculty members conduct a business simulation for high school students using SAP software. This simulation allows students to experience real life business scenarios and covers different aspects of running a business. Business Teacher Conference: Each year, the School of Business at Emporia State University hosts the Business Teacher Conference. This event has been held annually since 1967, and focuses on providing in-service education for current business and computer teachers throughout the state of Kansas. 9 STUDENT AND FACULTY OUTREACH COMMUNITY PROJECTS The Venture Alliance is a newly launched student project initiative coordinated through the Career Services team of the Business Resource Center. Student teams are available to execute projects for local businesses as part of their coursework over a semester. For students, it provides an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world setting and polish their networking skills. For businesses, it provides an opportunity to contribute to the professional development of tomorrow s business leaders while at the same time accessing specialized knowledge and skill on a no-cost basis. Examples of the regional organizations impacted by these outreach efforts include Dynamic Discs, Emporia Main Street, Emporia Recreation Center Flint Hills Mall, Glendo Corporation, Granada Theater, Hopkins Manufacturing, and Newman Regional Health The Emporia Entrepreneur Challenge is a venture idea competition held in the spring that is open to students from Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College. Students work with faculty, staff, and Emporia community members to develop a business concept. Teams go through various rounds of competition cultivating and promoting their ideas to a panel of judges. Winners of the Emporia event move on to represent Emporia State at a statewide competition. The Mentor Program encourages relationship building between Emporia State alumni, supporters, and current students. Mentors and mentees dedicate an hour per month communicating face-to-face, via , or video chat. This versatility allows for mentors from across the world to participate.
