About the Paulo Freire School The Paulo Freire Charter School is conveniently located across the street from Newark Broad Street Station, which provides a 15- minute direct line of service to New York Penn Station. The Paulo Freire Charter School (aka The Freire School) opened in September of 2012, and was chartered by the New Jersey State Department of Education to serve students in grades 9-12 within the city of Newark. At capacity, the Freire School serves 320 students. Mission of the Paulo Freire Charter School The mission of the Paulo Freire Charter School is to provide our scholars with an exceptional educational program that improves the quality of life in our community, by putting scholarship into practice for the purpose of addressing educational and social inequities. Our goal is to develop a self- actualized scholar, who possesses a knowledgeable and discerning mind, thrives in service to others, and is prepared for

2 higher education. Our staff members must firmly believe in the mission of the school, its goals, and its core value. The Paulo Freire Charter School is committed to: 1. Being data driven. 2. About the Position: The College Counselor at The Paulo Freire Charter School are responsible for the effective implementation of a comprehensive college readiness and counseling program. Passion for one s duty is a must, as our counselors promote and enhance academic, personal, social development of all students. Our counselors also guide our students through the college search, application, financial aid, and service learning processes. In addition, college counselors will be tasked with the essential role of coordinating our service learning program, and must be able to forge collaborations, and communicate the school s mission and vision to prospective business, nonprofit, and university partners. This position is ideal for applicants who have experience either in high school college counseling or college admissions, and who are interested in developing the growing college counseling and alumni services programs of the Paulo Freire Charter School. This position reports to the Director of Student Support Services and Executive Director of Academics. Excellent Candidates Will Demonstrate the Following Competencies: 1) Student- focused: Experienced working effectively with, building strong relationships with, and prioritizing the needs of educationally disadvantaged students. Understand and address the needs of children with special needs. Maintain confidentiality. Demonstrate a relentless drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of school; 2) Organizational and people leadership: Understand what makes urban schools succeed/fail, able to build a strong learning environment and make a positive contribution to school culture, able to drive classroom change, demonstrate the ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, and policies, and able to influence/develop others. 3) Team- oriented & optimistic: Give and gain respect, show empathy, work effectively in teams, behave professionally, work with a large group of diverse constituents, maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships, maintain positive outlook and perspective. 4) Self- accountability & reflective: Aware of own strengths and weaknesses, work relentlessly to improve upon weaknesses, are open to feedback, immediately implements feedback, able to take

3 blame for failures and willing to take personal responsibility, show balance in confidence vs. humility. 5) Adaptable: Manage uncertainty, demonstrate resilience, resolve, and flexibility in face of change, works well under pressure, demonstrate the understanding necessary to working in a highly dynamic, entrepreneurial environment. 6) Critical thinker, problem solver, and decision- maker: Able to analyze information and organize thinking to solve problems and make decisions that are aligned with an extraordinary goal, excited about initiating process & program improvements. 7) Strong work ethic: Roll- up- my- sleeves mentality, possesses a high level of passion for the work, take pride in work product and results, willingness to do whatever it takes to get the work done. 8) Personal organization: Prioritize among competing goals, multi- task effectively, meet schedules and deadlines, be punctual, prepared, and detail oriented. Demonstrate strong management of time and pacing in an extended instructional day (8:30 am 5:30 pm) 9) High expectations: Demonstrate unquestioned integrity, possess a vision for getting kids to college, accept and make no excuses, hold oneself, students, and colleagues accountable, willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure the school's success. The College Counselor performs the following essential duties and responsibilities: 1) Develop and implement a College Preparatory and Awareness curriculum for grades 9-12, and implement the curriculum school wide 2) Teach Fall/Spring college preparatory curriculum to students in grades 9-12 grade students 3) Work with all grades to build college- ready advisory system and facilitate the integration of the school- wide college readiness program 4) Work to infuse academic success, college readiness, career awareness, and self- discovery throughout the curriculum 5) Conduct structured, goal- oriented counseling sessions in response to identified needs of individuals and groups of students 6) Counsel students and their parents from the spring of junior year through the end of senior year as they research and apply to colleges 7) Interpret standardized test results and develop yearly college readiness plans for students

4 8) Plan and Revise student schedules to ensure compliance with high school graduation requirements and college readiness 9) Provide college, scholarship, and academic counseling to students and parents, schedule and develop parent information workshops, and conduct orientation activities for students new to the school 10) Meet with the academic team to monitor grades/credits/gpa benchmarks and programming; report on academic progress toward graduation to school administrators, parents, and grade level teams 11) Organize and implement the ACT/PARCC/PSAT/SAT preparation, administration, and registration school wide 12) Build and maintain relationships with parents and families of students through frequent and relevant communication via , phone and mailings. 13) Build and maintain relationships with college and universities to create partnerships that benefit both the school and students 14) Actively research all aspects of college placement: financial aid, scholarships, applications, and admissions standards 15) Assist with the Paulo Freire School s Service Learning program by promoting and connecting students to summer service learning and summer academic opportunities, and by guiding students through the selection and application process 16) Plan, Manage, and Implement College Week Programs: Information Sessions, College Fairs, College Tours, etc. 17) Monitor data on college applications/summer application process, and advocate for counselees to colleges and universities 18) Write Letters of Recommendation for caseload of students 19) Provide scholarship information 20) Consult with and serve as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students 21) Meet with students and parents regularly to discuss college options, curricular planning, and standardized test plans 22) Completes home visits and assessments, when necessary

5 23) Serves as a member of the family support team, and other school based teams, by developing and maintaining family outreach programs, specialists, and community partnerships. 24) Implement, train staff, and fully utilize the resources of Naviance to facilitate the college search and application process, as well as manage student and college data. 25) Modeling the school's principles and core values in all communications with students, families, staff, and outside organizations. 26) Assists Director of Student Support Services in design and implementation of major tasks 27) Other duties as assigned School & Community Relations 1) Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community. 2) Participate in the school community as a full member of the staff, including but not limited to assisting the Executive Directors with student and staff recruitment, planning of school- wide events, and participating in all- staff retreats and team- building events. Professional Development 1) Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees 2) Be open to feedback and willing to take personal responsibility 3) Maintain robust personal organization system that ensures all tasks or To Do items are captured, prioritized, and ultimately accomplished; plan each day and week to ensure that top priorities are addressed and accomplished on time 4) Engage in appropriate studies and activities to improve professional competence 5) Participates in appropriate local, state and national professional meetings, conferences, and conventions 6) Keeps informed of the latest research trends and developments in pertinent areas of position 7) Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences Skills & Qualifications

6 1) Must possess a Bachelor s Degree from a competitive college or university; Master's Degree preferred but not required. 2) Extensive knowledge of US colleges/universities and the college admissions process, with demonstrated experience with college admissions and financial aid counseling at the secondary school or collegiate level 3) A minimum of 2-3 year of successful relevant experience in an urban school environment, highly preferred. 4) Passion for achieving equity for low- income student populations, with prior experience working with high school students (especially first- generation) and their families in the college counseling field 5) Must be able to pass a criminal background check. 6) Must have excellent time and project management skills. 7) Must have a desire to be part of a team- oriented, mission- driven school. 8) Must have a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor. 9) Must be creative and detail oriented, with well- developed organization skills. 10) Must enjoy working with high school students. 11) Must possess an entrepreneurial spirit, and be willing to build an organization from the ground up, with a spirit to accommodate joining a growing and constantly improving team with a high level of responsibility for ensuring that over 85% of our second class of seniors matriculate to college 12) Demonstrated capacity in being a catalyst for change, well organized and collaborative.
