2 THE OPPORTUNITY The Dean of the Malek School of Health Professions will lead the School to its next level of academic excellence by working collaboratively across disciplines with students, faculty, staff, alumni and the wider community. THE UNIVERSITY Mission Marymount University is an independent Catholic university that emphasizes academic excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 3 THE UNIVERSITY (continued) Overview Marymount University, founded in 1950 as a two-year women s college by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, is Virginia s only Catholic comprehensive university. Today, Marymount is a comprehensive, coeducational institution serving over 3,700 undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing liberal arts traditions and Catholic identity. Located in historic Arlington, Virginia, just six miles and a short Metro ride away from Washington, D.C., Marymount offers easy access to the city s diverse political, historical, international and cultural opportunities, including numerous internships and avenues for experiential learning. The main campus is located on 21 verdant, rolling acres and is home to academic buildings, residence halls, the Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel, the Emerson G. Reinsch Library, the Lee Center and the recently completed Caruthers Hall. In addition to the main campus, Marymount has two other locations. The first is one mile south of the Main Campus the Ballston Center, which houses the School of Business Administration, the Departments of Physical Therapy, Forensic Psychology and Counseling, as well as the Graduate Admissions Office and Verizon Information Security Lab. The second is 12 miles west of the main campus Marymount s Reston Center, a state-of-the-art classroom and learning environment offering convenient day and evening undergraduate and graduate programs. 3

4 THE UNIVERSITY (continued) Academics & Student Body Marymount offers over 30 undergraduate and more than 20 master and doctoral programs within four academic schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Education and Human Services, and the Malek School of Health Professions. Marymount offers doctoral programs in Nursing, Physical Therapy and Counselor Education. The Carnegie Foundation lists Marymount as Master s L and the university is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Marymount s total enrollment for Fall 2012 was 3,702 total, of which two-thirds are undergraduate students and one-third are graduate students. The University prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive and diverse learning community, with over 37% of its student body made up of under-represented communities. U.S. News and World Report recently named Marymount the third-most diverse comprehensive university in the South. Marymount s learning community is comprised of a dynamic mix of undergraduate and graduate students who commute or live either on-campus in one of six residence halls or nearby offcampus rental housing. MU students can participate in more than 40 clubs, associations, publications and organizations. In addition, there are an array of services to support students in their growth and learning inside and outside the classroom. 4

5 THE UNIVERSITY Academics & Student Body (continued) Campus ministry, rooted in the Catholic faith and with openness for peoples of all religions, provides an opportunity to build positive lasting relationships and make a real difference in the world through service, faith and fellowship. In athletics, the Saints currently participate in 14 NCAA Division III men s and women s intercollegiate programs. Marymount continues to increase its intercollegiate sport programs. In , the University will launch first seasons in men s volleyball and baseball. Marymount has also taken a lead in the development of collegiate triathlon, offering both a men s and women s team. Continued Growth In 2011, Marymount completed the $20 million Campaign for Excellence, exceeding that goal by more than $2 million. Although Marymount has a modest endowment, it has substantial cash reserves and is in a very strong financial position, allowing the university to undertake substantial capital improvements, including to the iconic Main House, which houses the Office of Development & Alumni Relations as well as the Office of the President. In addition, renovations are underway on Gailhac Hall and the chapel. Finally, a complete reimagining and renovation of the Ballston Center is in the preliminary stage. When completed, the Center will provide additional classroom and lab space, as well as residential, commercial and retail space for the Marymount and Arlington community. Shank is Marymount s sixth (and second lay) President. Since taking office in 2011, he has completed a collaborative, university-wide strategic vision; increased enrollment, retention and endowment giving; and undertaken a number of capital improvements. Previously, Dr. Shank served as Dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of Dayton, where he led the revision of the MBA curriculum; successful AACSB reaffirmation; created two Academic Centers of Excellence; and raised more than $12 million for the School of Business. Dr. Sherri Lind Hughes is Marymount s Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs. Since her arrival in 2008, she has accomplished a number of important academic advancements, including creation of a comprehensive Center for Teaching and Learning to support students and faculty; enhancement of the rigor and consistency of the rank and tenure criteria and faculty evaluation process; and, the launching of doctoral programs in nursing and counselor education, masters programs in criminal justice and cyber-security, and an undergraduate program in health information management. She holds both her Ph.D. and M.A. in Psychology from Georgia Tech. 5

6 MALEK SCHOOL OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS Overview The Malek School of Health Professions, formally named in 2012 for benefactors Marlene A. and Frederic V. Malek, is a recognized leader in the education of skilled, compassionate health care professionals. More than one-sixth of Marymount s students approximately 600 men and women are enrolled in the School s undergraduate and graduate programs in Health and Human Performance, Nursing, and Physical Therapy. With a budget of $4.1 million, 29 full-time faculty, 24 adjunct faculty and 49 full-time and adjunct administrative, clinical, lab and educational staff, the School offers the B.S. in Health Sciences and the B.S.N. as a traditional 4-year program, accelerated second-degree program, and hybrid R.N. to B.S.N. program. At the graduate level, the School offers the M.S. in Health Promotion Management, M.S.N. in Family Nurse Practitioner and two doctoral programs: the clinical Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Nursing Practice. Marymount s Malek School of Health Professions has affiliations with the national capital area s leading health care organizations including the Inova Health System, Children s National Medical Center, Virginia Hospital Center, and many others. Located near the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, it provides students with outstanding clinical experiences and professional connections that open the doors to career success. Programs within the Malek School of Health Professions that have specialized accreditation are the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The B.S.N. program is also approved by the State Board of Nursing of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Department of Health and Human Performance and the Department of Nursing are located in Caruthers Hall, Marymount s new high-tech academic building, which opened in January In addition to classrooms and faculty offices, the building houses nine science teaching labs; five science research labs; and five health-science teaching labs, including the William Randolph Hearst Nursing Laboratory, which uses hi-fidelity simulation to model an acute-care hospital setting. The Department of Physical Therapy, currently located in the Ballston Center, is in the process of transitioning to its new home in nearby 4040 Fairfax Drive once that building s renovations are completed in the Spring of Still in the planning stages, the first floor of 4040 will provide a unique interdisciplinary clinical opportunity: a clinic that will serve the local community. Initially, it will be focused on Physical Therapy and Heath and Human Performance, but the long-term goal is to incorporate departments including Nursing and Counseling, offering a holistic approach to patient care. Leadership Dr. Theresa P. Tess Cappello is Dean of the Malek School of Health Professions. She received her B.S.N. and M.S.N. from Marymount and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Prior to becoming Dean in 2002, she taught and held leadership positions in the School for the previous 18 years. Under her leadership, the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) and Accelerated (second-degree) B.S.N., for those with a degree in another field, were established, as well as the University s first two practice doctorates the Doctor of Physical Therapy and the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Committed to community outreach, Dr. Cappello established the Nurse-Managed Health Center in partnership with St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church to deliver health education to vulnerable populations, many of who have limited English proficiency. 6

7 MALEK SCHOOL OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS (continued) The Position The Dean of the Malek School of Health Professions serves as the chief academic officer for the School and, as such, assumes responsibility for strategic leadership and operational management. The Dean reports directly to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and oversees the areas of faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; fundraising and community outreach/collaboration; budget management and resource allocation; program and curriculum development/ assessment; strategic planning; and maintaining regional, state, and national accreditation. Reporting directly to the Dean are: the Associate Dean of Health Professions, four Chairs (BSN Program, Physical Therapy, Graduate Nursing Program, and Health & Human Performance), and an Administrative Assistant. OPPORTUNITIES Major opportunities for the next Dean of the Malek School of Health Professions include: Harnessing the overall level of commitment within the Marymount community to move the Malek School to its next level of academic excellence; Promoting an inclusive, collegial and transparent environment, across both the three departments in the Malek School and the university, through shared governance, faculty engagement and increased creative opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration; Enhancing the School s historically strong ties to the community through increased grants, resource development and fundraising, marketing and promotion, and volunteerism and clinical service; Celebrating the School s commitment to its students through teaching and learning, clinical opportunities, increase faculty mentored research, and the continued education of the whole person; Exploring, in collaboration with the faculty and administration, the potential development of new and innovative programs; exploring the expansion of hybrid and online offerings, particularly at the graduate and doctoral levels; Working to expand and enhance the enrollment and retention in the School, particularly at the doctoral level; Working with the Provost and fellow Deans to implement the university s new strategic plan; assisting in the creation of a revised budgetary process tied to the School s and University s strategic goals; Participating in the development and execution of the capital improvements and campus master plan, particularly the Ballston Center and 4040 Fairfax Drive; and Advocating for, and supporting, the faculty and staff of the School through a holistic and global approach to leadership and management, recognition and open communication, and professional development opportunities. 7

8 QUALIFICATIONS The Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Malek School of Health Professions community seek a new Dean who is a visionary and strategic thinker and a person of high energy who: Has significant administrative and leadership experience at the level of department chair or higher; possesses a terminal degree in a discipline represented within the School or a related discipline; Has a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service that would enable appointment at the rank of professor; Demonstrates a collaborative, collegial and humane management style; is open and transparent in dealing with all stakeholders; has a strong desire to work with all of the School s faculty and staff; Is student-centered and faculty-driven; is a strong advocate for the School s faculty and students within the Dean s Council as well as within the context of Marymount s overall strategic vision; Is a strong communicator in both oral and written communication; has excellent interpersonal skills; listens effectively; Understands regional and specialized accreditation; program development and implementation as well as review and assessment; Has demonstrated success in, and is an articulate advocate for, teaching and learning, including innovative technology and online and hybrid educational delivery; Has the ability and strong desire to work seamlessly across undergraduate and graduate programs and across all programmatic areas; thinks broadly about health education and embraces the dynamic of an ever-changing health and health education landscape; Has a proven record of community networking both across the campus and externally; has an understanding of, and commitment to, fundraising and resource development, including grant work and creating and sustaining public and corporate partnerships; experience in programmatic growth desired; and Has a strong understanding of, and commitment to, the values of a liberal arts education in the context of professional programs; understands and supports Marymount s mission, vision, and values, including its Catholic identity. 8
