1 An Invitation to Apply: East Tennessee State University College of Nursing Director of Undergraduate Programs THE SEARCH The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) College of Nursing invites applications, nominations and inquiries for the position of Director of Undergraduate Programs. The primary responsibility of this position is management of the undergraduate programs, including development, implementation, and evaluation to ensure that the highest quality learning outcomes for the students are achieved. The College is looking for a dynamic individual with new ideas in curriculum, technology and informatics. ETSU is a doctoral/research university serving approximately 15,500 students. The University is located in the heart of southern Appalachia surrounded by beautiful rivers, lakes, and mountains. The College of Nursing, part of an Academic Health Science Center, has almost 60 full-time faculty members and enrolls almost 1,100 nursing students in its BSN, MSN, DNP, and PhD programs. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION The responsibilities of the Director of Undergraduate Programs position include: Maintain a collegial, scholarly department environment that supports and encourages faculty excellence in the traditional academic areas of teaching, research and service. Participate in the recruitment, orientation and continued development of faculty and staff. Promote the well being of students, faculty and staff. Identify and determine faculty roles, priority and assignments. Provide feedback and performance evaluation to faculty. Administer academic, human resources and legal policies. 1

2 Create a shared vision, set goals and develop a program plan. Attempt to ensure that space, equipment and facilities meet faculty and student needs. Coordinate relationships with internal and external constituencies where appropriate. Create a positive and productive work environment for support personnel. Prepare and monitor the program budget. Disseminate and share department information. Provide leadership for curricular development, planning, revision and implementation. Engage in the intellectual development of students. Teach classes. Advise and mentor students. Participate on dissertation, thesis and capstone committees. Participate in recruiting high-quality students. Oversee ongoing curricular review by the faculty to ensure currency and relevance. Engage in scholarly activity that is appropriate for the discipline. Provide service to the academy, profession and public. Participate on program/college/university governance committees/task forces and search committees. Participate in outside committees and task forces. Perform leadership tasks in professional associates/networks. Participate in professional development activities. Maintain/establish discipline accreditation where appropriate. Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES The Director of Undergraduate Programs shall possess knowledge and abilities, including: Knowledge of general academic policies and curriculum issues. Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents policies. Knowledge of accreditation policies where appropriate. Ability to engage in constructive problem solving and to make sound decisions. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff within the Department, College, University and diverse campus and community constituencies. Ability to work collaboratively with the leadership of other academic and administrative units to develop appropriate policies and/or programs. Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. 2

3 SUPERVISION GIVEN AND RECEIVED The Director of Undergraduate Programs shall: Initiate broad programs in consultation with program faculty, Associate Deans and the College Dean in accordance with the University s mission and policies, the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Council. Ensure that such programs conform with goals and objectives of the University, the College and the Undergraduate Programs. Supervise faculty and staff in the Undergraduate Programs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications and leadership characteristics: Doctorate in Nursing or a related field and a graduate degree in nursing. Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Tennessee. Achievement in teaching, research and service commensurate with eligibility for tenure or tenure-track appointment. Ability to work collaboratively within the College and the University. Demonstrated leadership ability and commitment to the profession. Effective communication and interpersonal skills consistent with the leadership role. Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English. Commitment to faculty development and mentorship for teaching, research, scholarship and practice. Minimum of five years in nursing education and educational administrative experience preferred. COLLEGE OF NURSING 2 The College of Nursing at East Tennessee State, part of an Academic Health Science Center, has over 50 faculty and enrolls approximately 1,080 students in the College s BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD programs. Features of the College of Nursing include: Fully accredited BSN and MSN programs. Traditional LPN-BSN, RN-BSN, Dual Degree and Accelerated Second-Degree BSN tracks. FNP, Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, Nursing Administration, and Clinical Nurse Leader MSN specialties. Participation in the statewide MSN-Regents Online Degree Program. PhD program with emphasis on rural health research. DNP program with post-baccalaureate and post-masters options. Specialties include ANP/GNP, FNP, PMHNP, and Executive Leadership. Collaborative relationships with regional clinical agencies, including fiscal support. Interdisciplinary programs and research with other health sciences and liberal arts colleges and community partners. Center for Nursing Research. History of over $3 million, annually, in grants and contracts for education, research, practice, and service initiatives. Comprehensive Office of Student Services, Testing Center, and NURSE Center. Network of ten nurse-managed primary care clinics caring for rural and underserved populations, including a Federally Qualified Health Center. Undergraduate Programs Traditional BSN Program: The traditional BSN program consists of five semesters of major courses after completion of the University s core requirements. The BSN degree is awarded after successful completion of all nursing course work qualifying the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). LPN-BSN Program: The LPN-BSN program consists of five semesters of major courses after completion of the University s core requirements. The BSN degree is awarded after successful completion of all nursing course work qualifying the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). RN-BSN Program: The RN-BSN program provides a pathway to obtaining a BSN degree for RNs with associate degrees or hospital certificates. The program is delivered online on either a full-time (3 semesters) or part-time (5 semesters) of nursing courses. 2 More information about the College is available at 5

6 Dual Degree RN-BSN Program: The Dual Degree RN-BSN program operates under an articulation agreement with several community colleges and leads to both an associate degree in nursing and a BSN degree. Several courses are taken the first summer at cohort community college locations. Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN Program: The Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN program is available to students holding a bachelor s degree from accredited schools in fields other than nursing. The program consists of five semesters of major courses after fulfillment of nursing prerequisites. The BSN degree is awarded after successful completion of all nursing course work qualifying the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Masters Programs MSN Program: The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program prepares nurses for advanced practice and entry into specialization. Both full-time and part-time options are available. Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) role participation is available at the MSN level. MSN Regents Online Degree Program: The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) is a collaborative effort among Colleges of Nursing and the Tennessee Board of Regents system to educate nurses and fill nursing shortages in the health care industry. Specialty areas are: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Nursing Administration (online hybrid), Nursing Education and Nursing Informatics. Doctoral Programs Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program prepares leaders in nursing and healthcare who can effect change, apply informatics and data management skills, translate research into evidence-based practice, influence health and social policy for diverse populations, and shape positive health system outcomes. An online/blended format is utilized and both part-time and full-time options are offered. Concentration areas are: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), Executive Leadership and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP, future concentration). PhD Program: The mission of the PhD in Nursing program is to prepare nurse scientists who will conduct research in nursing and engage in scholarship that will improve health care and health care delivery systems. The mission is achieved through an outstanding and relevant curriculum, delivered by talented faculty who mentor and support the PhD students through their learning experiences. The College is nationally known for its nurse-managed centers that provide primary care in rural and underserved settings, and for inter-professional learning experiences. Faculty members of the College conduct research that aims to reduce health disparities, improve health services and systems, and promote high quality nursing education. The program is delivered in an online and blended format. 6

7 Certificate Programs The College of Nursing has two types of Certificate programs: (1) post-masters certificate designed for master's prepared RNs wanting to complete coursework to qualify for a national certification exam for nurse practitioners and (2) non-degree certificate programs offered in conjunction with the College of Public Health. Faculty Practice Sites Faculty of the College of Nursing practice clinically at eleven nurse-managed sites in Johnson City and other locations in Tennessee.
