1 Post: Responsible to: SEDGEHILL SCHOOL Job Description Subject Leader PE Leadership Group Line Manager Salary: Inner London Pay Scale + TLR 1b ( 9,287) The key task of all teachers is to deliver high quality teaching and learning in the classroom; ensuring good quality planning, marking and record keeping. All teachers are tutors and may be responsible for the delivery of a planned Citizenship programme throughout the year in registration periods and as a discrete lesson. General Roles and Responsibilities: To teach across the age and ability range, carrying out the professional duties of a schoolteacher in accordance with the current provisions of the Conditions of Employment of School Teachers. To effectively plan and deliver lessons/programmes in accordance with the Subject/School s Scheme of Work, National Curriculum and exam board requirements, ensuring all learning is explicitly planned and differentiated for all learners. To regularly assess and record students performance, reporting to the appropriate Subject Leaders, external agencies, outside providers and to parents/carers as required and advising on examination entries as appropriate. To contribute to subject and whole school improvement, participating in subject and staff meetings as appropriate. To undertake duties as a tutor, including keeping an accurate attendance register, ensuring paper records are kept and attending to the welfare and grievance needs of the tutor group. To communicate with parents/carers on a regular basis in order to discuss progress, achievement and attainment. To undertake whole school duties on a rota basis, such as breaktime supervision as directed To participate in performance management system. To implement Sedgehill School s equal opportunities statement and other school policies. To be prepared to undertake continuing professional development. To be thorough in keeping records and using data to inform target setting and planning. 1

2 To contribute to the Sedgehill self-evaluation process. Specific Responsibilities: 1. To lead and manage the day-to-day strategic oversight for development and improvement in PE in all Key Stages including effective communication, organisation of staff, students and resources. 2. To oversee effective induction of all new staff, including liaising with other middle leaders. 3. Formulating and reviewing schemes of work which: a. Define medium and long term objectives (subject specific and to build learning power) b. Provide guidance on appropriate pedagogy, differentiation and assessment for learning. 4. To work with the PE team and whole staff to raise the academic achievement, attainment and progress of all students in PE, including planning and leading raising attainment and progress meetings (RAP). 5. To develop and implement target setting and assessment procedures that are rigorous, regular and moderated, assessing the attainment and progress of students. 6. To effectively organise students into appropriate learning groups in line with school policy. 7. To ensure high quality teaching and learning in PE and monitor lessons and learning through regular learning walks, observations, work scrutiny and target setting with teachers. 8. To generate, scrutinise and report from a wide range of an assessment data regularly and use this with confidence to review teaching and interventions with all students in PE. 9. Through joint practice development (JPD), promote, share and embed high quality teaching and learning styles. 10. To provide support for staff in all aspects of their work and wellbeing. 11. To provide a rich and stimulating learning environment within the PE department. 12. To lead in the CPD/JPD for staff in relevant areas and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current thinking and major initiatives leading on curriculum development and initiatives within PE. 13. To liaise with other staff within the school to ensure good student progress: SENCO, Careers Leader, EAL Leader, Learning Inclusion Leader, Vocational Leader, etc. 14. To ensure that there is a broad and exciting PE enrichment and enhancement programme including Sports Day. 15. To formulate and regularly review the annual subject improvement plan. 2

3 16. To contribute to whole school improvement programmes to raise achievement and attainment. 17. To lead and manage a reflective subject self-evaluation process, including formulating a comprehensive results analysis and subsequent actions for subject area improvements. 18. To effectively formulate and administer subject area resources and capitation. 19. To discuss subject area timetable and curriculum with members of the department and senior leaders to create an effective timetable to meet the needs of students, staff and whole school. 20. To work with the headteacher to ensure effective appraisal of staff within the subject area, including recommending pay progression on MPS/UPS. 21. To ensure that the school s behaviour policy is implemented and monitored. 22. To ensure that the achievements of students and staff in PE are celebrated and well publicised. 3

4 SEDGEHILL SCHOOL PE Subject Leader Person Specification Qualifications: Qualified Teacher status. First or subsequent degree. Recent and relevant professional development. Evidence of action research (desirable). Experience: Successful recent teaching experience of PE at KS3, 4 and 5. Up to date knowledge and understanding of PE local and National. Proven record of high quality teaching and classroom management. Experience of having impact on raising individual student and whole school standards. Ability to manage a range of middle management tasks to deadlines. A proven record of leading and managing staff effectively. A proven record of meeting own and other team members professional development needs. A proven record of leadinginitiatives with successful outcomes. Ability to meet the needs of all students. Successful experience in managing PE projects / initiatives. Successful experience of creating a positive learning ethos within the PE Team. Skills: Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the requirements needed to carry out the main responsibilities. Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of whole school issues. Ability to plan and implement strategies for monitoring and evaluation in order to raise standards. Ability to undertake effective classroom observation, measuring performance and offering constructive comment to teachers. Ability to undertake school improvement planning and self-evaluation. 4

Ability to respond positively to local and national initiatives. Ability to lead effective meetings. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to parents/carers and others. Personal Qualities: Good communication skills for a variety of audiences, both verbally and written. High expectations of staff and students. The ability to be able to work well under pressure and to respond quickly and appropriately to situations, which may arise in a school.
