Includes geological processes and hazards such as floods, earthquakes, and landslides and meteorological processes and hazards such as major storms, hurricanes and tornadoes. SUN Course Number: N/A Credit Hours: 4 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 3 Prerequisite(s) Appropriate score on assessment test or successful completion of PCS 021, TRE 089 and TRM 090 Co-requisite(s) GLG 110L Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Summarize the geologic and atmospheric processes responsible for natural hazards, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunami and meteor impacts. 2. Describe the interactions of earth systems with respect to their roles in causing natural disasters. 3. Identify areas susceptible to natural hazards and the frequency which these hazards become natural disasters. 4. Describe ways to observe and monitor natural disasters. 5. Explain why it is difficult to forecast natural disasters. 6. Plan ways to avoid the effects of natural disasters and mitigate their effects in areas where they are likely to occur. 7. Approach the challenges presented by natural hazards insightfully.
6 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Discuss the basic principles of plate tectonics. Objective 1.1 Identify the physical and chemical layers of the Earth and their boundary properties. Objective 1.2 Explain the way in which different seismic waves respond to the different layers Objective 1.3 Describe the properties of the major plate tectonic boundaries Objective 1.4 Relate the effects of convection cells in the mantle with plate tectonic movement of the Earth's crust Competency 2 Describe the way earthquake hazards are identified and mitigated. Objective 2.1 Explain the properties of P-waves, S-waves, and surface seismic waves. Objective 2.2 Identify areas in the world with intense earthquake activity related to plate boundaries Objective 2.3 Compare the effects of historic earthquakes on human society. Objective 2.4 Describe the methods used to measure and predict earthquakes. Competency 3 Explore the causes and effects of tsunami and the effects of tsunami on human society. Objective 3.1 Describe the physical properties of tsunami. Objective 3.2 Identify geographic regions subject to high rates of tsunami activity.
