1 EL Civics Objective 16 (Emergencies) Level: Beginning Low & Beginning High Task #1: Identify Emergencies & Disasters Language & Literacy Objectives: 1. Identify what constitutes an emergency or disaster, listing examples. INTRODUCTION In this lesson, students will learn how to identify common emergencies and disasters. ASSESSMENT TASK Students will label 8-10 pictures (BL=8; BH=10) identifying emergencies and disasters pts possible (1 pts each correct answer). SUGGESTED CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Watch PowerPoint slideshow of photos from different emergencies and disasters. (Download from (EL Civics Curriculum Materials. Show on screen using LCD projector or print slides as transparencies and use with OHP.) Use to spark class discussion. Discuss students personal experiences with emergencies and disasters. 3 Task 1 Handout #1 VOCABULARY IDENTIFY EMERGENCIES Adapted from emergency: A sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence or occasion requiring immediate action; a state of need for help or relief, created by some unexpected event. disaster: An occurrence causing widespread destruction and distress, resulting in great loss and misfortune. car accident: An unfortunate, unintentional event while driving that might cause damage, injury or loss. earthquake: Shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth. Caused by the release of built-up stress within rocks along geologic faults or by the movement of magma in volcanic areas. Usually followed by aftershocks. fall: To drop or descend under the force of gravity, as to a lower place through loss or lack of support. fire: The event of something burning (often destructive). flood: An overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. heart attack: An episode of heart failure or the stopping of normal heart function. Muscle damage to the heart caused by oxygen deprivation. Symptoms include sudden and sharp pain and pressure in the chest, which often spread to the shoulder, arm, and neck or jaw. Page 3 of 23

Originates in tropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean or the Caribbean Sea and moves generally northward. They lose force when they move over land because they lose their moisture source. NOTE: Known as a typhoon in the Pacific; cyclone in Southern Hemisphere. landslide: A slide of a large mass of dirt and rock down a mountain or cliff. Usually triggered by over-saturation (e.g. rain, snowmelt), or earthquake. oil spill: An accidental release of oil into a body of water, as from a tanker, offshore drilling rig, or underwater pipeline, often presenting a hazard to marine life and the environment. refinery explosion: A release of chemical energy in a sudden and often violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases. Caused by a chemical reaction at an oil refinery. tornado: A localized and violently destructive windstorm occurring over land characterized by a funnel-shaped cloud extending toward the ground. Chiefly occurs during thunderstorms, and ranges in width from a few yards to more than a mile. Common in the Midwest in U.S. tsunami: A unusually large wave on the ocean, usually caused by an undersea earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or coastal landslide. Can travel hundreds of miles over the open sea and cause extensive damage when it encounters land. Also called tidal wave. Page 5 of 23

In an emergency, you must do something as soon as possible to avoid losing property or life. FIRE Your house, car, or other place is on fire. Your home or things might get damaged. You might get hurt. EARTHQUAKE The ground shakes. Sometimes windows break, walls fall, streets crack. Things might break in your home. You might get hurt. FLOOD Water is where it shouldn t be. A flood can be from rain, a river, or a broken pipe. Your things might get damaged. You might get hurt. Page 9 of 23

If it touches the ground, your home or things can be damaged. You might get hurt. LANDSLIDE A fast slide of dirt and rock down a mountain or cliff. If the dirt is wet, it is called a MUDSLIDE. Your home or things can be damaged. You might get hurt. HEART ATTACK The heart doesn t work correctly. There is pain in your chest. You are very sick and might die. Page 11 of 23

Loses strength on land. Wind, rain and flooding can damage your home or things. You might get hurt. CAR ACCIDENT A car hits another car, a person, or a thing like a tree or a pole. Your car will be damaged. You might get hurt. REFINERY EXPLOSION A loud release of energy caused by a chemical reaction. Often includes shaking and fire. Hazardous gas may be released into the air. Flooding can damage your home or things. You might get hurt. FALL You fall to the ground while walking, running or climbing. You might get badly hurt. OIL SPILL An accidental release of oil into a body of water, as from a tanker, offshore drilling rig, or underwater pipeline. The environment is damaged. Marine life might get hurt or die.
