Emphasis on use of diagnostic manual to assist in the diagnosis, counseling, treatment planning and integrated treatment as part of service coordination for clients experiencing co-occurring disorders. Identification of clinical strategies to address cognitive, affective and behavioral domains of various disorders. SUN Course Number: Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Prerequisite(s): CHD 100, PSY101 Co-requisite(s): Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Identify the major diagnostic categories and describe the behavior characteristics and symptoms of each. 2. Analyze the data to determine treatment recommendations. 3. Relate the possible causes, consequences, and treatment of chemical dependency from the bio-psycho-social model perspective. 4. Recognize the potential for substance use disorders to mimic a variety of medical and mental health conditions and the potential for medical and mental health conditions to coexist with addiction and substance abuse. 5. Describe the relapse process and the factors that both increase and decrease the likelihood of relapse.
