Full Title: (100 character limit) Medical Coding I ICD 10-CM Short Title: (30 character limit) Currently students need to complete 31 chapters in a 16 week course. This will not be possible with the new ICD CM conversion. Catalog Course Description: Provides an overview of medical coding using ICD-10-CM and insurance reports as applied to the medical office SUN Course Number: Credit Hours: 3.0 Lecture Hours: 3.0 Lab Hours: 0.0 Prerequisite(s) HES 113 and HES 129 Co-requisite(s) MEA 131 Medical Coding II CPT-4 HCPCS Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Apply basic anatomy and physiology to coding procedures in the medical office. 2. Recognize the purpose and roles of the coding process in the medical field. 3. Properly identify the different purposes of the CPT-4, ICD9-10 and HCPCS codebooks. 4. Apply appropriate codes to corresponding documents.
5 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Competency 1 Discuss the purpose and organization of the CPT manual Objective 1.1 Identify the uses of the CPT manual. Objective 1.2 Articulate the importance of using the current year CPT manual. Objective 1.3 Identify placement of CPT codes on the CMS 1500 insurance forms. Objective 1.4 Recognize the symbols used in the CPT manual. Objective 1.5 List the major sections found in the CPT manual. Objective 1.6 Interpret the information contained in the section guidelines and notes. Objective 1.7 Identify and describe the text change symbols used in the CPT manual. Objective 1.8 Distinguish between professional and facility services. Competency 2 Demonstrate an understanding of the coding process. Objective 2.1 Learn rules and regulations regarding medical coding for the medical office. Objective 2.2 Analyze patient chart to extract pertinent information for coding. Objective 2.3 Apply confidentiality including HIPPA policies to medical coding. Objective 2.4 Identify the scope and purpose of the coding books. (ICD, CPT, HCPCS) Competency 3 Locate correct diagnostic code in the CPT codes book. Objective 3.1 Demonstrate the use of the CPT manual. Objective 3.2 Correctly utilize the CPT index and be able to identify Category II and III CPT codes. Objective 3.3 Correctly identify and use CPT modifiers. Objective 3.4 Accurately convert written descriptions of procedures from the patients chart into a numerical description. Objective 3.5 Define diagnosis-related groups. Competency 4 Analyze the patient s status and determine the correct coding classifications Objective 4.1 Identify and explain the three factors of E/M codes assignment. Objective 4.2 Differentiate between a new and established patient, and between an inpatient and outpatient. Objective 4.3 Analyze the patient s condition including history, examination, and resultant medical decision making as it pertains to coding procedures. Objective 4.4 Demonstrate the ability to code E/M services Competency 5 Accurately utilized the CPT codes and modifiers as they relate to anesthesia procedures. Objective 5.1 Define types of anesthesia. Objective 5.2 Correctly use the anesthesia payment formula. Objective 5.3 Demonstrate the ability to code anesthesia services. Objective 5.4 Accurately utilize the HCPCS modifiers. Competency 6 Accurately utilized the CPT codes and modifiers as they relate to surgical procedures. Objective 6.1 Demonstrate the use of the Surgery Section of the CPT including the notes and guidelines. Objective 6.2 State the use of the unlisted procedure code. Objective 6.3 Analyze the contents of a surgical package and surgical tray. Objective 6.4 Demonstrate the ability to code surgical services Competency 7 Accurately utilized the CPT codes and modifiers as they relate to the Integumentary System services. Objective 7.1 Identify and review the main services for Nails, Skin, and Accessory Structures. Objective 7.2 Analyze the coding implications in destruction, Mohs micrographic surgery, and breast procedures. Objective 7.3 Demonstrate the ability to code Integumentary services.
