It will bring together decision makers, municipal leaders, professors, experts and art and design students to share ideas and experiences. RDW2012 gives us a possibility to extend cooperation between the Donghua and Metropolia Universities. At the same time, it focuses on shaping a better future for all of us through innovations in urban planning. Metropolia University is proud to be an active partner in RDW2012, Shanghai-D Week 2012 and World Design Capital Helsinki Urban Inspiration from Finland is a wonderful example of all the great things generated during the Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2012 between the European Union and China. 3 what is it about? Exhibition A wide-ranging exhibition entitled Urban Inspiration showcases projects by art and design students of Helsinki Metropolia University. The exhibition offers insights into contemporary user-centered Scandinavian design. The showrooms present fresh ideas for public transport and everyday mobility ranging from an easy-access city cycling service center to attractive cycling apparel. Another section concentrates on comfortable and trendy patient clothing in hospitals. The exhibition also displays a unique photo collection of workshops using artbased methods to improve the well-being of people of all ages as well as introduces the possibilities of 3D technology in visualizing the past and present of city planning. PRESENTATIONS During the week, professors, experts and art and design students from Helsinki Metropolia University will give presentations on current topics and innovations regarding the improvement of urban life. The presentations will take place at the Exhibition Hall of Donghua University. The purpose of the presentations is to share ideas, support the creation of new products and public services and to promote collaboration between China and Finland. Workshops Helsinki Metropolia University and Donghua University are proud to provide workshops of mutual interest and to bring Chinese and Finnish art and design students together during the exhibition week. The students get together to plan and produce user-centered solutions for patient apparel for children in hospitals, for public city cycling service centers and for 3D animation in game art contexts. Both universities believe that the young energy and creativity of our students form the foundation for radical design innovations to shape a better urban future. DECISION MAKERS SEMINAR Metropolia University of Applied Sciences operates in the Helsinki metropolitan area, which consists of three big cities: Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. Shanghai and Espoo are sister cities that have established close connections to each other on the municipal level. The decision makers seminar, entitled Well-being for All, is a discussion platform for the city leaders of Shanghai and Espoo and the administrators of the Donghua and Metropolia Universities. The presentations and discussions provide perspectives on the challenges of urban planning. The seminar facilitates the exchange of expertise and experiences between municipal decision makers and academic staff of the universities.

4 exhibition 展 览 描 述 Design for Everyday Mobility The Design for Everyday Mobility Project generates solutions that help to create a better environment for cyclists, pedestrians and users of public transport. The main goal is to build and maintain a lively urban culture through high quality design. Design for Everyday Mobility develops innovations together with urban residents on the move in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. User-centered design supports urban planning, for example, by making ecological mobility attractive to everybody. The display is based on digital visual materials, prototypes, and sketches for a public cycling service center. An interesting part of the show is a city biking apparel design project. Design in Everyday Life 日 常 生 活 设 计 Visualizing the Past With 3D technology, it is possible to visualize things that no longer exist or are presently in the state of ruin. Technology helps us to see how lost cities, their people, transport and other aspects of their everyday life may have looked like. With the help of these virtual models, new discoveries can be made and outdated theories can be proven wrong.

5 Quality of life 优 质 生 活 patient Apparel in Hospitals Good quality and pleasant appearance of hospital clothing can remarkably improve the well-being of patients. Patient apparel that looks more like casual clothing can support recuperation and have a positive effect on the patient s mood and motivation to get better. In addition to nice appearance, important aspects of patient apparel are ease and comfort of use as well as suitability for industrial washing and storage. DESIGNED Well-being For Dental Clinics How can the visual appearance change the character of the dentist s waiting room? This was the key question in an interior design project Metropolia students made in collaboration with the Espoo City Council. The goal was to find solutions for promoting patient and staff well-being in public dental clinics in Finland. Art-based Methods in PROMOTION OF Well-being Music can build bridges between people even in unexpected contexts. Art has significant potential as an enriching and empowering source of well-being and quality of life. This is why community music, participatory and experience-based learning are an important part of today s music professional s work. Yours and Mine: 24 hour Impressions from Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa An interactive photo collage displays open-access public places in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Vantaa. The collage showcases the many characteristics of the chosen places and premises in the cities of Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa. The purpose of this Design Student project was to promote the idea of an open city and to observe changes in the daily use of public places during an 24-hour period. The photo collage was made by observing city life and co-created with residents by interviewing them.

6 workshops 工 作 坊 MOVING IN THE CITY Donghua and Metropolia students work together in a hands-on project that maps out the past, the present and the future of urban cycling in Shanghai. Metropolia students and professors wish to share experiences with Donghua students and to explore possible futures for urban transportation. The workshop consists of materials from pre-studies conducted in Helsinki. During the Urban Inspiration from Finland project week new ideas and materials will be collected into a Moving in the City Workbook through a process of facilitated discussions and co-creation in two-hour sessions. An important part of the workshop is building up a creative teamwork spirit in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere.

7 3D in visualizing T ai CHI FOR BEGINNERS In this workshop Donghua and Helsinki Metropolia students will produce animated 3D movies that introduce the basics of T ai Chi to Western people. The movements of T ai Chi are scanned in situ and imported to 3D software. The Chinese and Finnish students are working together in the Exhibition Hall every day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. program and presentations 展 览 演 讲 与 演 示 时 间 表 PATIENT APPAREL FOR CHILDREN The project is based on a course on designing patient apparel for children and young people. The target group is children of sizes cm. Product design takes into account the gender differences in body shape and preferences of boys and girls in color and in playing. We believe that everybody including children in hospitals have the right to nice everyday design. Before travelling to China, Finnish students have learned about children s clothing and patient apparel for childrenin Finland, while Donghua students have been studying the same topics in China. When students come together, they will present to each other the results of their work and start designing a children s collection for hospitals. The concrete results of the workshop will include a few prototypes, videos and a photo show of the workshop.
