6 The Commitment of Espoo City The Espoo Story portrays the history, presence and future of Espoo. It also identifies city s greatest challenges. These are addressed in all city activities but in particular by cross-administrational development programmes and will be implemented in collaboration. Development Programmes 1. 7 Me & MyCity mini society in Espoo LC Encouraging all stakeholders to provide quality learning opportunities and to make their own unique contribution to building a learning city Me & MyCity is a learning environment for primary school students, that deals with entrepreneurship, economy and the society. It is supported by local businesses. It is a miniature city, with companies, where students spend one day as employees, citizens and consumers. The visit is preceded by a training day for teachers and ten lessons in the students own classroom. Me and MyCity has been awarded by both the European Commission and the World Innovation Summit for Education, WISE. 7

8 Maker Space in a Library LC Establishing community based learning spaces LC Encouraging citizens and residents to contribute their talents, skills, knowledge and experience on a voluntary basis Maker space is an easy access place in a library where it is possible to create, try out, build, learn and teach new things in a safe way. It is run by volunteers and it is free of charge to join. People of all ages learn together and teach each other to understand new things. Popular topics include 3Dprinting or skills like sewing or coding. Winner of Mayor s Innovation Competition

9 Konsti Family Support LC Motivating people to participate in family and community learning Konsti family support is a concept that focuses to help families when one or more of family members are going through a difficult time. This new service focuses on supporting the whole family instead of one individual protecting especially children. It has an emphasis on preventing problems to escalate. Honorary mention in Mayor s Innovation Competition 2014, Winner of the International Quality Innovation 2014 by Excellence Finland 9

10 Espoo s Energy Information System LC Reducing the negative impacts of economic and other human activities on the natural environment Espoo's Energy Information System (EIS) is a browser-based service which compares different forms of energy. The service is intended for those who are considering switching to renewable energy. It will help residents and companies to optimize their property s overall emissions and costs. With EIS, it is also possible to shorten times for processing planning and construction permits. Winner of Mayor s Innovation Competition
